    While learning any art skills, I’ve found I go through the same sequence of experiences. This applies whether it’s perspective, anatomy, gesture, form, light and shadow, colour, composition - any skill.
    I’ve never just watched a tutorial and been able to do it. I’ve always had to go through ups and downs, doubt, hope, frustration. Perhaps you also have a sequence like this?
    Let me know your experiences in the comments :)

    I'm not avoiding skills, I just get home and stare listlessly into space, when I wanted to practice and when I finally get enough energy to act... it's bedtime and work beckons once more.

      staring listlessly into space sounds healthier than disappearing into a youtube rabbit hole tho

      I find uncertainty is my nemesis. Not knowing what I want to do mostly so I don’t know what skills to practice. Looking at my favourite artists helps a lot but beware of the rabbit hole again lol. And then when Look at tutorials I schedule twice the time to listen to it so I can take notes and do the exercices at the same time. Usually takes longer than that and sometimes I pause the video for a long time in the middle to finish a drawing. Oh snap! Am I drawing on my own? Happens once in a while :)
      I don’t know why I’m writing all that but that’s comments towards this video! But certainly I feel you @black citadel9 and what I wrote above only happens sometimes. Most of the time I can start and last for 5 minutes. Then I try again. And again.

    Art is super difficult for me to learn becuase of how most videos teach it. I struggle to learn more open ended aspects, and almost every art tutorial teaches the same subject/skill in slightly different ways. This naturally makes it way more confusing for me. I learn best when I'm learning directly from someone, but I really don't have the luxury of having some kind of teacher right now.

    • @sourgreendolly7685
      @sourgreendolly7685 2 года назад +6

      Try different ways and stick with what works for you. And don’t forget to experiment and play, art is expression and you can learn from playing too

    • @lebundon

      @@sourgreendolly7685 I agree with you. But that's exactly what he was talking about, this a pretty generic and non specific comment for improvement. I also have a very hard time with open ended instructions so i can see his point when everyone teaches the same things in slightly different ways but you can still never understand.
      I have seen the "draw simple" shapes teaching about 100 times, yet i still struggle. I keep going but since i can't get private lessons or anything of that sort i am still slowly improving.

    I’ve never seen another artist describe these roadblocks as honestly as you did. The Fluke part resonated with me because as I learn to draw Manga style. Once a blue moon, there a perfect shape of head and then nothing. I guess that’s where i stop and doubt, do I know anything at all ?

    You’re amazing! Nearly all other tutors on RUclips do indeed teach as if the knowledge is obvious, without fully acknowledging the utterly painful and bumpy process of actually LEARNING - practice makes perfect but how do you practice and why do I hate everything I draw? You are the first person to fully empathise with the journey of learning. Thank you 😁

    I can totally relate to that feeling after gaining some confidence (or is it just an ego massage?) from a step-by-step demo and then transitioning to do it on your own.
    One of the key things for me has been that I get more enjoyment from creating my own painting than I do from following someone else's. However, it does show up lots of "faults", but that's OK - I just say to myself this is what practice is all about and it's fun and often full of many interesting surprises. The demonstrations, online classes, workshops etc. can all help develop skills and techniques, but the real juice to let loose is the creative one from within.
    In another video of yours, you hilariously ended with Just Do It, so I will rephrase that (and avoid the lawyer calling...) by saying it like this: JUST LOVE IT. When it comes to art, or anything that one çares about, life is just too precious and too short to not do it with love.

  • @lindaraereneau484
    @lindaraereneau484 Год назад

    I realized recently that I was drawing better before I watched how-to tutorials. When I instinctively and simply sought to show the effect, capture the feeling tone, I did it. Then it became lifeless when I tried to do it "right." However, I feel that ultimately, once elements of the tutorials settle in my mind and become not conscious (at the forefront), the knowledge will aid me in the details. This is a part of learning that I think is so important in every new skill, whether it is learning a new language or science. Info/skills have to be digested. It has to become "unconscious," a part of us, before we can use it fluidly. So learning these things is not a mistake. Just think about how awkward one is when learning new dance steps at first. We are clumsy, stiff. But once you learn them, you don't think about them. You do them fluidly. Same with driving, riding a bicycle, swimming, skiing. Same with learning to draw! Many different aspects of perception and muscle coordination need to develop. They can't all develop at the same time, and when we work on one, the others are impacted and we might think we're going backwards. But if we persist, they all come together in the end. And at times we may thin we lose something, but that's because our innate intelligence is working to bring something else on board. Main thing to remember is that we can only fully dance when, after learning the steps, we don't insist on thinking about them up front.

    • @lovelifedrawing
      @lovelifedrawing  Год назад

      yeah you often feel like you're going backwards when you're learning something new!

    Seems like you're describing the artists Dunning-Kruger effect. I experience this over and over again for proportions, gesture, anatomy, color, penmanship, perspective and form. I feel like I'm making progress, start feeling good, go to do something different, get depressed because I really don't know what it's supposed to look like and know I have the start over and spend a few dozen hours studying.
    I also have the issue of things not being "correct" and unable to reconcile why. I don't want to spend thousands of hours copying someone else's work before my brain gets naturally wired to see what the problem is. It is a neat "ah ha" moment when it happens but it feels like there should be a more direct procedural process that can be worked out as opposed to just doing it over and over until you just start seeing it.

    Almost frighteningly accurate deconstruction of the process, Kenzo! Can especially relate to that "fluke" moment, which I've by now learned to interpret as a "I've seen the light" moment that keeps me going. The really hard part, to me, is figuring out where to go. Even if I just concentrate on, totally random example, becoming excellent at figure drawing, what does that even mean to me? So many amazing artists do it in just as many amazing ways. Most of the time, I have to try things out for a while to decide if I actually care. So the path is everything but a straight line.

      @lovelifedrawing  2 года назад +1

    I think the key skill that's needed to understand and cope with these stages is "Awareness". If your aware of where you are in your process of learning this new technique, idea or skill and you can actively remind yourself that your supposed to feel frustrated in this moment and its okay because it means you are actually in the process of getting better right now in this moment, then you can grow the courage to simply trust the process. Its also important to always take a step back when you done and recognize where you came from, where your going and that there is always more to learn, you are never a master, you are ALWAYS a student.

    noticed first that you’re left handed. Don’t know why i do this when i watch tutorials but i just do. (I’m left handed) i inherited a “knack“ for art since i was 5… it’s in the genes i guess…but I’m decades older now and realize that my artwork doesn’t have that “professional” look. I’m stuck in art 101. i never formally learned but i can’t let it go. I just have this passion and great imagination, but no confidence. i just don’t know why i was given this talent and can’t get successful. All the basic art courses i took in college my instructors kept my artwork. Maybe I’m too old now. 🤷‍♀️😢.

I tend to get stuck on one tiny aspect for weeks on end, getting frustrated, bored and in turn less motivated to practice. Which makes me progress even slower. I know that mastering one aspect of drawing is probably unrealistic without at least knowing the basics of the rest, but I cant help myself. Any tips on that?

    What about artists with mental disabilities like me? I have ADHD and autism and it really effects me to the point where I forget almost everything I learned the previous day and seeing all these great artists not having ADHD or autism is taxing on my will to draw, can I ever do what they do?
    I practiced mannequins, figures, construction, anatomy for months straight almost every draw for hours on end and still to this day I can not draw a fully proportionate figure :(

      Hi I'm afraid I don't know enough about those conditions to comment. However, I will say that after months of practice I also couldn't draw great figures. learning to draw figures to a point you are satisfied can take years of practice for anyone

    Everyone says talent isn't a thing, and maybe talent isn't the right word for it. But surely aptitude is a thing? Like when you were in school some kids had an easier time in math class. Not that they were born knowing it but something about how it was taught to them and how their brain processes information just made it click more readily. There's also a concept in coding called tutorial hell, where you'll follow a tutorial and think you've learned it only to then realize you've only gotten good at copying the tutorial, not applying those skills elsewhere. I'm always trying, looking for new methods and tutorials and artists I can try and learn from. But boy does it feel like I'm rubbing my face on a brick wall and hoping the wall wears out before my face does.

    I love your videos very much! A while ago I decided for myself to go back to the basics as if I had never learned anything because I hate almost everything I create. ^^° I can't stop feeling like a failure that learns to damn slow. Maybe I can see step 8-) more after this, haha

    I used to draw over 10 years ago, but I stopped because my art skills were going no where and I was drawing art in a unsatisfactory way… I wished I didn’t stop.. but I do want to draw again. Problem is… I’m autistic, I have ADHD, I have depression and anxiety. With these issues, I feel that I will I’ll never be able to learn to draw ever again. I’ve searched high and low for answers and help… the usual ‘practice, practice, practice’ response from any typical artist does not work! I just don’t know what to do to start drawing cartoon/anime art again.. could you help or give any advice on what I should do? Please?

      Even if I only been drawing for 6, 7 years and aside of going to art school doing commissions of my favourite anime and video games characters, uhh I'd suggest you to work with 3d models or god shaped figure drawing mannequins *not the wood large ones* and try to use them as a 3d visualization reference, not copy them but use them for visualizing something that mildly resembles a body and it's twists, and then you add the anatomy and knowledge you practiced on top. Also if you don't know how to draw a face wether it's stylistic one from comics or anime or a real one, pick up a bunch of references from the kind of faces you want to draw or the parts of the face you struggle the most and do repetitions of these, iterations, try to draw the same pic several times and analyse why you like one or some over others, analyse the lines, gestures, forms and shapes you used, etc, hoping it helps somewhat fellow artist.

      Let yourself draw from your imagination really badly. Keep doing it really badly and 1) you'll realise what are the most important things to learn so that you can do it slightly better after a long time and 2) you will get better by practising those 'most important things'.
