I think you are right about the double lock. I recently went on my first trio where i slept in the back of my 2017 4runner. The first night I had the windows cracked but it got down to mid 30s and i woke up in the middle of the night, turned on the power to roll them up and think i only single clicked and put the keys in my shoe. Next morning it was totally dead. In the back of my head i remembered you saying this. I jumped it with my portable power and the next three nights i double clicked every night and no battery problems. I also remember hearing a buzzing sound like a motor running but nothing was on and i cannot for the life of me think what it was.
This has got to be one of the most useful videos on this topic I've seen yet. So many end up with similar solutions to things but you actually showed new products and tips and I thank you!
Excellent video with very helpful tips. We are in the process of making the back of our pickup truck our off road camping vehicle for those trips when we cannot take the trailer. I enjoy your enthusiasm, sincerity in sharing, and your collaboration with your Dad! I love all the beautiful memories with my Dad! Enjoy and safe travels.🙏🏽🐾🐾
It’s amazing how much stuff you could store in the back of the 4Runner. Very creative solutions. Base camp is huge comparatively. You do a great job explaining the practical stuff. Can’t wait to see how you modify the camper!
Thank you. I’ve been on the fence about buying a stowaway cargo carrier for my 2023 4Runner. Glad to see one actually mounted on a 5th gen . I am rigging for Surf fishing / trout fishing. 😀Expensive but seems worth it.
It seems that you really enjoyed camping in your 4Runner. I hope your Tundra is just as pleasurable or even more. I have a 3gen 4Runner that I converted into a micro camper complete with solar, refrigerator, inside bike storage and enough room to sleep comfortably. I've considered a larger vehicle but I really do love my 4Runner! There was definitely a time or two that I was hoping for a little bit more space but I made it work and I'm glad I did. It never let me down! I wish you many many many awesome adventures in your new rig!
Great tips, even for other vehicles. Looking forward to the new adventures with your tundra and truck camper. As always, thanks for the inspiration and for sharing everything you have learned along the way!
Noooo! Don't get rid of the 4Runner. I Cass, I'm Angel just recently started watching you channel. Thanks for all the videos, information and tips to include wear to buy some of items you have used successfully. Best of luck with the new rig, at least it's still in the Toyota family😁. very ingenious I feel like trying on my RX and just throw a mattress in the back, still waiting on my truck to be built. Congrats on the Tundra great vehicle! I guess the F150 with the pro power on board did not make the cut.. Awesome set up on the 4 Runner.
Thanks for the detailed video, your set up is probably more cost effective than buying a drawer system. I plan to start traveling in my 2006 LandCruiser until I move up to adding a small trailer.
What a great video. Awesome ideas. I am a "weekend warrieor" and am always looking for ideas. I have the same cooler as you but twice the size. It is too big in most cases, so I may buy the smaller one just to have also especially for day trips. Thanks for the tips. I can't imagine traveling with two animals in a vehicle much less living that way. Good on you! I can't wait to see your ideas for the truck camper and truck. I am excited for you and your new truck. Congrats!!
It’s Roswell. Can’t be the 4Runner. I love the racks on the side and top. They would be a great addition to my 4Runner. I didn’t see them in your equipment list. More on those items please. The Tundra will open up some areas that are more extreme unless you have the 4Runner Off Road Premium. Great stuff though.
Good choice with the tundra. The Tundra will save you a lot of headaches from repairs especially if you plan to do a lot of driving. From your other video, I thought you were looking into a Ford or Chevy.
The Tundra is a good choice! I’m sure we’ll see the video soon. Looking forward to it. Nice set up in the 4 runner! Too bad it’s gone. Maybe the you tuber who lives in the Prius would have bought it. 😂
Great video as usual. Your story inspires me everyday to hit the road now! I installed the hitch for a small trailer. But still SUV camping. Is the stow away carrier pictured in the video the max size or the traditional. It looks super sized in the video. Thank you for the lead.

Sounds like you've had a heck of a lot of adventures in this 4 runner. Bet you're going to miss it. Well, out with the old and in with the new. Looking forward to the new adventures with the truck and camper.
Definitely will miss it and I agree I wish I did videos back then as well to document the travels. It was really a lot of fun how agile I could be with just the 4Runner.
Very interesting how you set it up and how you made things work for you. I did something similar to my Xterra, modified the interior to make it work for us. Can't wait to see the Tundra and what mods you do. Until next time... Travel Safe.
Very interesting video! While waiting to decide and purchase something may just have to try doing something similar with our Ford Explorer. Seems like lots of fun!
Excellent video and great tips. My question is what was your experience pulling the "Base Camp Trailer" with the 4 Runner? I have dreamed for many years of traveling with my two Schnoodles from Alaska to Ushuaia at the bottom of South America on the Pan American Highway and visiting all countries in between...
Happy New Year Cass, Looking forward to seeing all your adventures with the new rig. We just got a new pup, a 9 week old Cockapoo called Finn and booked our first camping trip at the end of May (Should be hopefully warmer by then here in Toronto LOL) It will be the first time Finn and our 14 month old cat (Monty) will experience camping. Fingers crossed :) Stay safe
Jasper and Napoleon are awesome. You're not too bad yourself 😎 I'm waiting for my Rivian R1S so look forward to doing some camping. Should be interesting in an EV. Did you consider an EV before going with the Tundra?
Congrats on the Rivian that should be amazing when it comes in! I haven't gone EV yet, as I find a lot of the remote places I go don't have charging stations. Especially for trips like Alaska, I'd be worried about finding adequate stations.

Hey, loved this video and the racks in the back as well! I'm curious what year and model you have as my 2022 trd off road doesn't have a hatch on the trunk to get out from the inside after sleeping in it. Just wondering if there is a way to set this up without major modifications? Also you mentioned about the double lock feature and using the key in the ignition, but I have a push start. How do I lock and arm the car while I'm in it with the fob? Hopefully you have a solution, but no worries if you don't, thx!!
Did you ever have the need to use a heater? I have only SUV'd once so far and was warm except for my head but not too terrible. I was thinking of a small DC auto heater connected to an auxiliary battery that I could charge during the day. I left a couple windows cracked open to help reduce condensation.
I’ve got a ‘23 40th anniv ed. Can I add the ski rack on one side and kayak rack on the other side of the stock cross bars? Also want to add hitch-mounted bike rack. Also…what if you don’t build the leveling platform for the bed? It just means you sleep at a slight elevated angle?
Because your truck camper weighs so little you should be ok with the Tundra or the Tacoma. They are both rated for about the same weight even though the Tundra is bigger. If you kept your racks from the Forerunner you should be able to use them in the back seat area to help with storage.
I tow with a Highlander Hybrid and set up the back in primitive fashion so I can sleep if I don't have my trailer with me. This has allowed me to go places off-road that the trailer can't manage. And when I came home for the winter, I could sleep en route after the trailer was put in storage (saved lots of money). It was really helpful to see what you were doing for storage because my sleeping space was kinda tight given my storage/cooler needs! Do you have something to block light from the windows?
I didn't have anything on the windows, as light doesn't bother me too much (from parking lots and such). I have seen a lot of videos out there of people making small curtains to cover the windows.
Are you keeping all the gear when you trade the 4runner in? Or would you be interested in getting rid of the bed platform? We have a 2014 4runner which is why I'm asking. Loved seeing the ideas, thanks
I did end up selling everything out of the 4Runner, but actually still have the bed platform, mattress and husky liner. Are you anywhere near Colorado?
@@TailsofWanderlust Good choice as I think the new (2022) tundra's are kind of ugly looking and Toyota dropped the V8 witch is a very durable and reliable work horse.

I think most suitable vehicle for your need is a truck if not full size than min Tacoma with roof top tent on the back. This would have saved you a lot of money and bring lot of comfort and plenty of space .. when I am saying plenty it would be enough to take care all needs.
Unfortunately I’ve only ever used Lucid so can’t comment on a specific other brand. But get one with good reviews that splits into 4 like this. Every now and then I find the battery dead in my 2000 four runner so my ears perked up at "double locking" -- I have no idea what that is. Could u describe it please. Thank you in advance.

Hahah I'm pretty sure he's always thinking that. Thanks for watching!
Where is the shelf link?
What size is the mattress that you used?
It was a twin foldable mattress and I cut one small panel off to make it fit: amzn.to/3I8csbZ
could you sleep flat on your back? my husband is 6'1" I'm thinking he won't fit comfortably with the way the second row seats stick up when folded. TY!
I could sleep flat on my back, but I’m 5’7”
@@TailsofWanderlust did you do a seat delete?

I'll have it in a future video for sure! Probably around February time.

Thanks for watching Patricia!
What's the name of the black rack system you have on your windows?
It's from Rago Fabrication
Every now and then I find the battery dead in my 2000 four runner so my ears perked up at "double locking" -- I have no idea what that is. Could u describe it please. Thank you in advance.
Sure - for my 4Runner I had to hit the lock button on the key fab twice.
You are soooo cool 😎
Thanks Charlie! Appreciate you checking out the video!
Tundra Nice!!
Thanks!! Appreciate you checking out the video!
Thats how I set up my 4 Runner for my dog and I. Sad to see your 4R go.
That's awesome - hope you both enjoy the camping in it!
Are you selling anything off of it?
I ended up selling off several parts of it. Still have the platform and mattress that I'm trying to sell.
