You nailed it Adam! Keeping it as natural as possible for the fish is the key to s happy fish which should maximize there colors! Tank looks great like always
I've had a theory that when fish are in the lake (where it's possibly darker) they tend to be brighter and show their colors off more so they can be seen. I'm sure others have had the same theory but it's something that I've noticed in my tanks. Great video Adam.
great info! It makes full sense why my yellow tail acei show more color on the days that I only have the lights on them for a couple of hours vs 6-8! There's even been times where I've came home late at night with pure darkeness in the tank and turned the light on and all 3 of them will be showing great color for about 30-60 mins and then no color again
99% of cichlids these days are tank bred fish so they are pretty used to lights on 6-8hrs right? Leaving the lights on regularly doesn't hurt them right??
+Nick Hall you are right on tank raised. many people have noticed if you leave lights on excessively long they can get stressed. 6 to 8 probably isn't an issue
Denny's Aquatics hi Denny. in my opinion fish need time with some dim or indirect lighting to relax and the almost no light for sleep and rest. I almost try to simulate a sunset over lake Malawi. I go lights on for 90 minutes then light off but shades open until it's dark. you could do the same thing with a simple lamp
I feed them pellets once a day. No, blood worms are not good for african cichlids, they give african cichlids bloat, they are great for south and Central American cichlids though
Adam, we talk alot about maintenance, weekly water changes, ect. Can you please tell me what "daily" maintenance do you do to keep your tank looking crystal clear? I'm finding myself vacuuming waist and skimming the water multiple times pre day. I feed only twice daily. I've got 75 gallon wit 17 juvenile African cichlids. thanks for your time and knowledge! Oohrah!
jared martin hi Jared thanks for commenting. my daily schedule is......nothing. sometimes doing too much will never let your water clear up. I only vacuum once every week or so unless it's just an overwhelming amount building up. I also only feed once per day. I would recommend cutting back to 1 feeding per day and cut back your vacuuming to maybe once every 3 or 4 days. just try not vacuuming or stirring up anything for 4 or 5 days and I bet you see a little clearing up. just my experience

+Cichlid Bro I honestly have not heard of that. I've had fluorescent lights on my quarantine tanks for much longer than that and haven't noticed too much

I like how the background and substrate blends. it makes the tank look bigger and taller. Great advice Adam! Especially in an agressive tank like Africans.
Lighting is exactly how I control the moods. I only use the tank lights when I'm feeding, watching them taking pics and vids. Rest of the time they're off. I had noticed lighting always worked them up in a frenzy.
I have found many of the same things regarding natural light vs LED light. I wonder if the LED moonlight setting also stresses them out or not? Mine seem to be pretty active in that setting too, albeit not as agro as when the white light is on. Thoughts? Experiences? As always, thanks for the great vids.
+Shannon Murray thank you Shannon. I cannot even turn my moonlight setting on because the fish go absolutely insane. I just try to mimic a Malawi sunset. full light for 90 minutes then I just open the shades as the sun sets and they seem to like that
excellent! I feel selfish wanting my light on longer, because they are so fun to watch. But there is no denying that they are growing more quickly and coloring up more brightly with less light. Thanks again!

The mbuna need mainly veggie. The peacocks can eat veggie or some fish based protein. If you want to keep mbuna and peacocks together try to keep a more veggie based pellet died and supplement some fish or krill pellets sparingly
I like to leve my lights on 4 to 6 hrs a day it really helped when i went to full spectrum lights. I think sometimes the intense bright white with a few blue leds are way to bright and stress the fish, So the spectrum of lights mean alot beautiful tank bro what size is the tank i might get one and start back with some haps.? Ty for vid
Does make sense, apparently that's why neons are so bright due to the dark murky water they live in. Got to say I love your clown loach with the extra blotch. I've never seen that before.
Your advice is right on. You might consider putting a few more rocks inside the tank for more of the fish to hide. That way even the largest fish can see some shelter.
I don't have my life's on very long at all ....although I have natural sunlight that comes in....its funny how my fish get aggressive when the lites are on to long ...but when I leave the soft blue lite on they seem to really like it and aren't nearly as aggressive......my eyebiter used to be a very cool blue and he used to be my tank boss but I noticed he has lost some color but he's maintaining well he is no longer the tank boss I often wonder why he lost color and never regained it I will try these methods and continue to feed my guys northfin cicchlid pellets and krill pro

+Aqua adventurer - it's a slim model from aqua decor. I did a video on it close to a year ago and put a link in the description if u want to check it out

Efrain's Cichlids awesome efrain.
Thanx. Bro ima try that for the whole month
Cool, good luck
ok now the light stuff is bs i have 2 oscars and 1 jaguar they are happy and rather have the light on when i turn them off they go back to the bottom.
Is there any food you can feed mbunas haps and peacocks?
The mbuna need mainly veggie. The peacocks can eat veggie or some fish based protein. If you want to keep mbuna and peacocks together try to keep a more veggie based pellet died and supplement some fish or krill pellets sparingly
@@adamc7918 perfect thank you
Youre welcome. Best of luck. If you see mbuna getting bloat its too much protein
@@adamc7918 ah i see thank you
I like to leve my lights on 4 to 6 hrs a day it really helped when i went to full spectrum lights. I think sometimes the intense bright white with a few blue leds are way to bright and stress the fish, So the spectrum of lights mean alot beautiful tank bro what size is the tank i might get one and start back with some haps.? Ty for vid
Hi motor, this is a 220, recently I replaced it with a 300 that you can see in my recent videos
Nice
Does make sense, apparently that's why neons are so bright due to the dark murky water they live in.
Got to say I love your clown loach with the extra blotch. I've never seen that before.
+Bert Ramsay thank you for watching bert
Not at all, The pleasure was all mine, thank you.
Isn' it stressful to for the south Americans to be in the same water parameters as the africans?
Your advice is right on. You might consider putting a few more rocks inside the tank for more of the fish to hide. That way even the largest fish can see some shelter.
Thanks Rita, yes good point
Mashallah
or it could've been that he came of age or finally felt comfy enough in that tank.
I don't have my life's on very long at all ....although I have natural sunlight that comes in....its funny how my fish get aggressive when the lites are on to long ...but when I leave the soft blue lite on they seem to really like it and aren't nearly as aggressive......my eyebiter used to be a very cool blue and he used to be my tank boss but I noticed he has lost some color but he's maintaining well he is no longer the tank boss I often wonder why he lost color and never regained it I will try these methods and continue to feed my guys northfin cicchlid pellets and krill pro
bernie grant thanks for watching Bernie. someone else probably took the eye biters spot as the dominant male so naturally he will color down to show submission. he may decide to be king again one day lol
Adam C I figured that's why he did that..... my Tyranochromis is the new tank boss but even he gets nipped by my Venustus and deep water hap at times
My blue electric hap becomes dark blue in the night then in the morning when I turn the room light on after couple of hours he loses he's colour.
+N. tech yeah that's not uncommon just give him time. most fish turn darker at night. it helps them camouflage themselves at night
Very useful information, If people don't think it's any truth to this. Ask Jay Wilson what happen when his buddy left his tank lights on all day LoL....
+J.T Amazing Cichlid Man haha his venustus became a murderer lol
Adam C 😩😂😭
I have a 70 gallon tank and I left the lights on for 6 months and ..... nothing happened !
Glad it worked out for u
