I have kept fish for about 30 years..even ran a fish department....never liked african cichlids...amazonian focus I guess...but have recently really thought about setting up a tank with some Lethrinops..been watching tons of random vids on thr africans and this video is top notch man...very educational and very well done without being pretentious...thanks for taking the time to make and share
I don't just "like" this I LOVE THIS!!! Absolutely just cant say thank you enough. I have been researching for months, trying to learn all that I can before I purchase my first batch of Cichlids. This is SO wonderful, I will watch it again & again. Stay well and take good care :0)~
Since I got back in the hobby, this is with out a doubt the best and most helpful video I've seen. I've watched it about 30 times. thanks for taking the time to put this out. very much appreciated.
A simple way of looking at it would be to say there are three major groups: Haplochromis (sandy zone dwellers), Mbuna (rocky zone dwellers) and Aulonocara (intermediate zone or cave dwellers). It gets more complicated than that but it is a good guide to their requirements in terms of space and decor. Nice vid and nice fish.
man love your fish. new to he African cichlids and really having a blast learning all the name colors and everything about them.this helped me a lot.just wanted to say thanks.and again love your fish.
I learned more watching this video than I did in a week of reading articles and forum posts and such. I'm just starting a fishless cycle on a new 150g and I'm sure glad I found this before I made some very bad choices at my LFS. Thanks a ton.
Great video, talk about CONTENT!!!!!! I love it! This needs to be required viewing for everyone keeping cichlids. Your tanks and fish are looking incredible my friend!
Copidachromis Azureus is another example. They are blue and you can always tell them apart by their distinct 3 black spots in a line along their caudal region.
Great vid and very informative. I am fairly new to the hobby and have a 150 gal tank with the goal of having all male lake malawi cichlids to include mauna, haps and peacocks. Your video will certainly help with stocking.
Hi kingfish. Just wait he'd your very interesting video on identifying African cichlids, really enjoyed your input and information. I myself keep African cichlid, also have a 400 litre tank full of American cichlids and getting a new 240 litre tank in two weeks for my trophies Duboisii and dolphins. I learnt a lot about cichlids watching your great video, and I thank you for your allow me to see your wonderful African cichlids. I did not realise that super vc10 are so agreesive , I have a pair in my African tank, along with strawberry cichlids, yellow labs, Aratus , blue jewels, red jewels, frontosa, crabo, empress cichlids, chocolate cichlids, ect. I relive now that some of my fish may fight and kill each other so if you can tell me which African cichlid that should not be in the same tank I would apprieate your help and advice. Great video, great looking fish dude. Many thanks from dennis
I'm quite certain that's an albino zebra at 15:25, nice looking fish. I've kept a lot of yello labs and never seen one that elongated, they are more peacock shaped if anything.
Thats one great tank and video. Are dragon bloods and strawberries the same? Also how many african cichlids would be a safe amount for a 50 gallon. Thanks for any help you can give!
Generally, strawberries and Dragon bloods are the same fish. But some can be confused with an albino eureka red. General stocking rule is 1" of fish per gallon. And stock for expected grown size if not planning to move fish or get additional tanks...which we all eventually do! LOL
Just watched this video and it was really well done with great info, so much info i needed to pause it and take notes to remember the fish names lol Love that tank my brother it looks awesome. 1 question tho what is the name of that back ground in your tank and how is it mounted? inside or outside tank. Also Subed you Dan
My tank is doing great! I've been spending a lot of time getting my koi pond ready for the summer. My cichlids are doing great. Had some fry make it to juveniles so everything is going great. Thanks for asking.
Are all Mbuna very aggressive because i have 4 lemon yellows Mbuna in a 55 gallon tank. Their tank-mates are 4 peacock cichlid, 1 tetra,1 rainbow shark 2 humbug cats 2 Bristol nosed pleco 1 whipped tailed cat and 1 upside down catfish. The mbuna male is around 5 inches and is the tank boss but does very well with smaller fish. Nobody gets bitten or torn fins and the yellows breed and are a family..I cant figure out why and how the Tetra does it but the boss and him are buddy's.Very nice video ty..
This is a awesome video! As I am still trying to identify my cichlids. I'm very very very new to this and I'm not to sure my tank is even safe for my fish.
KingFish Stop by my channel sometime and sub, I'm doing a "Fish of the Day" series by illustrating many of the various cichlids. Just finished my first one yesterday, the "Reuben Red". I have plans for a few oil paintings as well. Love your show tank and collection btw! Cheers.
KingFish Thanks!! Hey I only have what..about 2000 more species to draw? LOL not counting all the Koi types as well! Glad you came by KingFish...I'll try to keep it interesting! Looking forward to your videos!
Everything u mentioned was dead on livingstoni so true cant work w other species of same. I had two he chase him all day everyday til he killed the other one finally. Mbuna above all aggressive on another level. Great video subbed
Great video. Can you tell me what kind of cichlid you have in your 50 gallon at point 12:03 on the timer. It's a bright blue fish with red tail and fins and prominent striping. I just bought one that looks similar at my LFS and it was just in with assorted cichlids. Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time and making this truly helpful video. I'm a beginner and just posted a video of my fish asking for some help ID'ing them since most of the fish I bought in the asst' cichlids tanks at the local fish stores. My 2 videos of my cichlids are on motomania354 , my youtube site if you were interested in seeing them. The latest video posted on 4/14/15 has all 15 of my cichlids. I think that is the most I should put in a 55 gallon tank but am not sure.I have no idea what any of them are except the auratis.
General stocking rule... 1" of fish per gallon. That means grown fish size if you're planning to keep them all together and not get a new tank. For instance, you state 15 cichlids (which vary 4-8" depending of breed) in your case you have 15 cichlids...Let's assume they'll all grow to 5" (and that's being super conservative), that equals 75" meaning you would need at least a 75 gallon tank when they are all adults. Usually, most would have at least a 100 g because most get bigger than 5". Just letting you know so you don't wonder why your water quality and fish health suddenly nose dives in 6 months - year. Have a great day!
The one you said was an Astatotilapia is actually a fish that is yet to be given a name or cataloged scientifically, it’s actually referred to as a “Species 44” and it’s native to Lake Victoria in Africa. They look very similar to Astatotilapia(Zebra Obliquiden) but they’re not the same fish. Just google species 44 Cichlid under images. I have 2 of them, when they fully color up the space between the first 2 vertical bars will be a bright orange and towards the back will be yellow. They only reach about 5 inches max. Also they are more aggressive than lake Malawi cichlids such as Haps and peacocks.
IMO Hybrid peacocks are not a good choice for beginners. Because of the mix that makes an OB tends to make them very overly aggressive! With my OB in my 125-gallon I cannot keep another male peacock colored up with him...he either strips them of all color or kills them. SO he is in a the tank with mostly HAPS now
My frontosa is typically fine. Protects itself but does not typically bully any fish to where it is a problem. Frontosas are typically docile and hardy. I hope this helps.
You said strawberry, it’s a dragon blood Cichlid, which is used to breed the O.B. Cichlids... can’t recall what is bred with the dragon blood though right off hand tho...
Hello KingFish! New subbie here & you have a great channel. What are your thoughts here on my issue with temps...a few months ago i bought a new fish and brought ich in my tank. I salted & slowly raised tank to 86F over 5-days (no issue) then in a matter of another 5-days brought it up to 89F and held it here for 15-days. NOW MY ISSUE; the ICH is gone BUT when i lower the temps back down to roughly 80F over a 10-day period my fish start acting up again and only go back normal when i approach 85-86F temps. They seem to be happiest 86F; any thoughts on what is happening here? thanks in advance
I love aulonocara (duh) and protomelas so much. But my big thanks is for reminding me the venustus is not a hap lol This hobby is a trip with common names. My venustus is a ninja with eating fry so as beautiful as he is, I can't stand him now.
thanks for the video it really helped me with my tanks..like soneome said before i never knew i had any happs in my tank but from watching your video i have alot of them haha thanks alot for the video maybe ill mak a video of my tanks and you could maybe help me identify some of them that i have been confused with... let me know
I love Red Borleyi. I have had 3. I consider them a hap. I had two with great temperaments and one that was a bit aggressive. If you have a chance to get 1 I would definitely recommend it. I would get another in a heartbeat.
If I could ask for your insight, if I keep my pH in range, do you think the Peacocks and Haps could live well with KH 11ppm and GH 30ppm? We're on a well treated with just a house carbon filter. And I have the 55gal tank on a canister filter. I really loved the Jalo Reef, but I think mixing the Mbuna with the others (that I just love) that you have shown here would be a mistake. Thanks again for this, it really helped me chose what I want for my tank. Also, do you have a good online supplier? Our LFS leave much to be desired. Take good care, your fish are SO beautiful. Thanks for sharing this :0)~
Thanks for the compliment on my fish. Drs. Foster and Smith is a very good online supplier. The best person to seek advice from regarding the KH and GH ranges is Cyberaquarist. He is a hobbyist that has worked in the fish industry for a number of years. BTW I wouldn't mix the Mbuna as a rule of thumb but sometimes they do just fine. There are always exceptions.
Thank you for the contacts, I will check them out for sure. Yes, about the Mbuna, I have learned SO much from SO many of you in the hobby. I really wanted the Jalo, but after researching so much info. it's undeniable...IF I want all of the other Cichlids I really love, I will have to sacrifice the Jalo for a happy tank. Maybe, at some point, down the road, I can have a dedicated Mbuna tank. Thank you for the info and take good care :0)~
You can keep many of them together. It depends on the specific behaviors of your fish, size of your tank, hiding spaces, genders, etc. I would watch the level of aggressiveness early. (It is more likely to work depending of the species of mbuna). Also make sure the mbuna are very young otherwise they tend to by hyperaggressive. 40 gallons and 5 fish can work.
I've decided to go with a 50 gallon and for mbunas these are the ones I'm choosing to go with along with the ratios: 1M: 4F Chindongo saulosi and 1M:4F Labidohromis sp. "Perlmutt"
What bottom feeders are best for sand? I have a regular pleco in my other tank that used to be sanded. (I got rid of the sand because the pleco kept ruining everything and was looking pale so now that I have gravel the tank and him are better) I don't want another pleco for that reason. So what bottom feeder should I go with that won't mess up everything again?
Glad to hear that you are into the hobby. I wouldn't put more than 5 small fish in that 45 gallon for the first 2 months. I'd then add 3 wait another 2 months then at 2. However all of this is based on your filtration and overall setup.
Just keep an eye on the water quality via monitoring the ph, nitrites and nitrates and it will go well. Remember unstocking is always better. As you get more comfortable you can add fish but you will need to add more filtration. As a rule you can't overfilter. As a rule I filter twice to three times the amount needed. Good luck.
I would stay away from any mbuna and concentrate on Peacocks. This way you can get a large color variety with a little less aggression. They are all aggressive but this is your best chance.
I have kept fish for about 30 years..even ran a fish department....never liked african cichlids...amazonian focus I guess...but have recently really thought about setting up a tank with some Lethrinops..been watching tons of random vids on thr africans and this video is top notch man...very educational and very well done without being pretentious...thanks for taking the time to make and share

awesome king!!!! beautiful fish and gorgeous tanks man keep it up and thank u for all your help
Thank you for taking the time for the video, sure helps me on selecting fish, great video!

Very much welcomed
I've watched this video 5 times already, wish there were more like it
The Astatotilapia at 11:51 looks a lot like my SP 44 "thick skin" from Lake Victoria. Beautiful fish.
Great video . All your fish really look good
Thx
You spoke of inbreeding a few times when I think you meant crossbreeding. This kind of video is very educational. Thanks.
Nice Tank
Thank you for this. New to the cichlid world and it is a bit overwhelming!
No problem. I'll do my best to answer any question that you may have.
Great video, talk about CONTENT!!!!!! I love it! This needs to be required viewing for everyone keeping cichlids. Your tanks and fish are looking incredible my friend!

Thank for being so informative it makes a huge difference :)
Great job presenting and very informative, thank you
Copidachromis Azureus is another example. They are blue and you can always tell them apart by their distinct 3 black spots in a line along their caudal region.
Thank you. how long have you had ACs?
A couple years. I just happen to have an Azureus. Used to have a Borelyi as well. Awesome fish!
Great vid and very informative. I am fairly new to the hobby and have a 150 gal tank with the goal of having all male lake malawi cichlids to include mauna, haps and peacocks. Your video will certainly help with stocking.
Very informative! Thank you!

Beautiful pool and classroom.
Great vid
Thanks, lots of good info. Beautiful tank.
I would love an updated video, I’m curious if this information is still correct to-date.
Love checking in on your tank!
I'm quite certain that's an albino zebra at 15:25, nice looking fish. I've kept a lot of yello labs and never seen one that elongated, they are more peacock shaped if anything.
When done king. Very informative !!
Thx
Thanks for sharing,very helpful.
nice video.
Nice helpful info!
Thank you
Love the video... Helpful info
Hey bro great video. Very beautiful tanks. Can you please tell me what kind of white sand you have in your 50gal?
Thats one great tank and video. Are dragon bloods and strawberries the same? Also how many african cichlids would be a safe amount for a 50 gallon. Thanks for any help you can give!

1"per gallon rule is nonsense! would you put a 10" oscar in a 10 gallon tank?
One of those fish you had trouble identifying is a beautiful Tropheops.
very nice vid!!
Just watched this video and it was really well done with great info, so much info i needed to pause it and take notes to remember the fish names lol
Love that tank my brother it looks awesome.
1 question tho what is the name of that back ground in your tank and how is it mounted? inside or outside tank.

Your unknown fish at 20:02 is a Pearlmutt cichlid. I have that one too in my 75 gallon mixed Malawi tank.

Thanks.
Great info..how many times a day did you feed ur fish?

Great video. I thnk you have the white lab mis-identified, looks like a cobalt zebra.
any good books with pictures that I could buy to collect and study????
oh and great video
Great info
Thank you for taking the time and making this truly helpful video. I'm a beginner and just posted a video of my fish asking for some help ID'ing them since most of the fish I bought in the asst' cichlids tanks at the local fish stores. My 2 videos of my cichlids are on motomania354 , my youtube site if you were interested in seeing them. Does your calculation account for catfish and plecos or is it just for cichlids?
Boss tank!
The one you said was an Astatotilapia is actually a fish that is yet to be given a name or cataloged scientifically, it’s actually referred to as a “Species 44” and it’s native to Lake Victoria in Africa. Great vid king fish, how does the frontosa get on with the lads? Keen to add one.
My frontosa is typically fine. Protects itself but does not typically bully any fish to where it is a problem. Frontosas are typically docile and hardy. I hope this helps.
Yeah that's great thanks, does it feed well enough?
Don Poisson
Yes no problems.
You said strawberry, it’s a dragon blood Cichlid, which is used to breed the O.B. Cichlids... can’t recall what is bred with the dragon blood though right off hand tho...
Beautiful Venustus bro...
Albino red top zebra is a Mbuna
thanks for the video it really helped me with my tanks..like soneome said before i never knew i had any happs in my tank but from watching your video i have alot of them haha thanks alot for the video maybe ill mak a video of my tanks and you could maybe help me identify some of them that i have been confused with... let me know
What do you think about Red Borleyi? Is it a Hap or a Peacok?
How aggressive can they get
I love Red Borleyi.
Do u still have the tank
Can I keep 1 or 2 peacock/hap with a couple of mbunas? (I'm looking to get a 40gal tank)
"Perlmutt"
Where do you get your fish?
Do you need females in the tank for the males to Colour up or can I just get away with putting all juveniles male and they will naturally colour up ??
pucks ate the oscar
So... where are you? How's the tanks ?
What bottom feeders are best for sand? I have a regular pleco in my other tank that used to be sanded. (I got rid of the sand because the pleco kept ruining everything and was looking pale so now that I have gravel the tank and him are better) I don't want another pleco for that reason. So what bottom feeder should I go with that won't mess up everything again?
Upside down catfish is a common choice.
i noticed a female mirror ball too
i have two African cichlids a jack Dempsey an a big ass tiger oscar
+Josh Rosaro I guess you don't have any African Cichlids then..
Those are south american cichlids. Both tend to be very aggressive when mature
Albino is a Albino Colbalt Zebra Cichilid. I have one.
or an albino Ice blue zebra, same riff far as I know
I have a 45 gal cube tank , how many Africans can I put in there if I start out with small ones ?
Glad to hear that you are into the hobby. I wouldn't put more than 5 small fish in that 45 gallon for the first 2 months. I'd then add 3 wait another 2 months then at 2. However all of this is based on your filtration and overall setup.
I have a canister filter and it's going good
Just keep an eye on the water quality via monitoring the ph, nitrites and nitrates and it will go well. Remember unstocking is always better. As you get more comfortable you can add fish but you will need to add more filtration. As a rule you can't overfilter. As a rule I filter twice to three times the amount needed. Good luck.
Bro, how did you make that 3D background?
A broker in Moreno Valley. He doesn't have a storefront.
Is it "fish junkie"? BTW you kinda sound like deltron 3030 a little lmao
lol
hey king fish i got a 400 litre tank im gunna fill with cichlids theirs a lot of big names i have to learn and remember got any tips ?
I would stay away from any mbuna and concentrate on Peacocks. This way you can get a large color variety with a little less aggression. They are all aggressive but this is your best chance.
what kind of fish is the black shark looking fish I see?
An upside down catfish (Synodontis Catfish from Central Africa). Mine was larger than most.
Thanks
