Govan is one of the best if not the best guitar improviser, the highest musical level is the level of improvisation this guy has! That kind of freedom is very rare! You can hear in almost every other player exercise oriented solos even in guitar masters like Asato, Mancusso or Quayle you can hear a little stiffness, with Guthrie you can hear and feel musical freedom!! Fluidity! His level of musicianship is off the charts, only surpassed by Van Halen! Very very rare!
I love how his playing is like a tapestry of his influences while still having his own style. Alot of people play and sound very similar to their idols without thoroughly developing themselves as a unique player. You can definitely pick out some of his influences in his playing, but I think he brings it to another place all together. As any true artist should, in my opinion. 🤘

I think the main reason I don't bother anymore is because there are many conceptions of what qualifies as the best. An of which, most are just subjective opinions. Whether my own or another person's. I even began noticing that I can't really decide on one absolute "best player", even subjectively. It always depends on so many variables. In otherwords, it's just my opinion, an it changes based on things like my mood or context. I can't certainly say Guthrie is the absolute best, even in a specific genre. There are some players who just have a natural way of playing and composing. I'm not saying that Guthrie can't imitate it to a really high level, but artistically there are still things lost. Guthrie may be a better and broader ranged player than someone like Jimmy Page an even be able to mimick his playing. But artistically there are still things lost. I'm someone who definitely loves technical players. Most of the music I listen to consist of what are considered high level players. But I admit there are less consistent an even sometimes straight sloppy players I like. By no means am I saying I like sloppy players who can't keep time or stay in key or anything like that. But there is music that if it was done "perfectly" it could change the entire feeling of the song. There's definitely times wreckless, flawed playing adds an emotional touch to a song. Like when you hear a singer really belting out at an emotional high point in the song and their voice cracks a bit. Technically speaking it's flawed, but artistically it demonstrates sincere raw emotion. An emotions aren't generally considered to be something we always have control over. Especially emotions of pain, anger or sadness. Sorry for the rant. 😜

Which I feel like is easy to do with drumming. But I think it also comes down to taste and preferences. I know for me I'll listen to certain players primarily because I like their art and feel. While other players I'll listen almost entirely for their technical ability. The best is when you find players who can seamlessly go in-between. So like a player who can be extremely precise and technical but also someone who can kinda be a little rough around the edges in an artistic way. 🤷♂️

I do, I saw several interviews of him. I'm surprised at how self-taught through playing along with music at slower speed and gradually faster to 100% of its tempo can bring you this far if you're dedicated. Not to mention he learned one or two about music theory when he did those transcription for several guitar magazines back in his day, explaining mods and scales and finger positioning (last one is not theoretical of course). Amazing gift and paired with relentless efforts from young teenager age.
god didn't create the guitar. .., or anything for that matter. Talent and creation come from those who chase it relentlessly. give accolades without the need for god. No mystery how he got this good.
This one is really cool because he really sounds like a horn player ( not that I am hooked on Jazz, I prefer more eloquent shredding ( and am sometimes guilty of it as you will hear but with cleaner tones so it sounds a little less like shred - and I have a strong R&B influence ) . Anyway - very nice playing here from GG.
Guthrie Govan is everything that's ever been played on electric guitar in one person. Allan Holdsworth (RIP) is the guitarist who most tried to create horn-like melodic lines, and one of the few that GG can't copy.
Guthrie did not learn how to play the guitar. The guitar learned how to be played by Guthrie. I actually thought his tone was better when he was with Suhr. Suhr makes incredible sounding guitars.

Never heard him actually play a song of any real merit. Seriously, he sounds like a transcriber playing bits of songs he’s transcribed. Even his ‘supposed’ songs sound like a hotch-potch of hotlicks. Nothing more.
Great musician, guitarist's guitarist , fenomenal! but I get bored of all these "monsters" past 10 minutes. So I go back to "songs" ...Pink Floyd, Genesis.... where a "solo" does make sense leading a song from a place to another. Music is music, speed and dexteriry exibitions belong to the Circus world.....imho.
Good points Mauro, I go back to the Beatles, Floyd, Genesis, Rush that have songs with heart soul & meaning embelished with tasty solos that fit. Guthrie is an absolute virtuoso on a different level but years ago guitar gods were created from listening to great bands.

I'd say, he's equal to John Petrucci. They both can shred, in their own genre. Conversely, Petrucci can do some good jazz and Goven can do some decent metal. Petrucci, can't touch Goven in Jazz, and Goven, can't touch Petrucci in metal. Gilmore could bend strings in key sustaining notes. That's his schtick.
