I enjoy watching documentaries about subjects like this. They are tributes to human insanity. No one really needs to climb a mountain or dive into the depths of the ocean to make history, to gain fame, money, or to feel glorious or successful. All the great heroic achievements are futile and quickly forgotten. The simple everyday things we do for our family, friends, clients, and strangers are infinitely more important. They too are forgotten, of course. But there is a difference between the human journey driven by crazed self-centeredness and the one that strengthens social bonds and makes our lives more humanly useful and productive.

I like your post. You explained a lot of truths in a very well phrased paragraph. Good work 👍

I indexed and proof read the English language version of Harrer's autobiography and I have also read articles critical of him, so I know a bit about the issue. My conclusion is that we need to see things through the eyes of people of the time. In Fascist and Communist countries a person needed to join "the party" if they wanted permits to do anything unusual. Harrer only joined the party after he climbed the North Wall because he wanted to join an expedition to the Himalaya, and it was common knowledge that Nazi Party membership was required. But he never displayed fascist behavior in India or Tibet, joining the party was simply necessary to be allowed to travel. Thousands of others in communist and fascist countries in the 20th century also joined the governing party, but that did not make them fascists or communists.

Great job with the subtitles as you played tons of recordings in that appear to be crucial elements WHATEVER THIS WAS ALL ABOUT.🙄

The editing of this documentary after the deaths of those two climbers was.. an interesting choice. Very glossed over and seemingly apathetic.
Seems like this documentary should have been renamed, the N*zi connections to the history of alpine climbing, because that's what seemed to be the focus of the filmmaker.
Also, there is a distinct lack of subtitles and dubbing after the 37-minute mark.
The inclusion of the story of the two climbers who died during the makings of this should have NOT been included in the story once they died. The filmmaker chose to include it for shock value. It had nothing to do with the history of alpine climbing and they immediately went back to talk about N*zi's after the two men fell. Disgraceful use of their deaths for monetary gain, without a single in memorium acknowledgement for the rest of the film.

04:11 Fanatics on the edge - the climb that many called ‘insane,’ yet others couldn’t resist! The North Face of the Eiger in the 1930s was the ultimate dare, where ambition met certain death. Why did they keep going, knowing they may never return?

    What’s “controversial”?
    It’s just climbing.
Anyway. Saw this on the BBC when it was first made.
