This was wonderful to listen to Diane..
Funnily, I subconsciously have always preferred lamps and candles to overhead lights - it seems to be far more relaxing, and allows the day to close in a peaceful way..
I think Danish interior decoration and design lends itself to creating calm interiors...and the simplicity allows you to add lots of gorgeous cushions and throws without looking busy...
Spending time with your friends by the beach with a cup of hot tea sound idyllic ... as do the teddy bear picnics in the woods with your family :) What a wonderful tradition to gather your family around in the living room in the evening... just what our high tech and high speed world needs these days (even more than ever before!)
It just boils down to pausing, and appreciating the simple things doesn't it?? :)
You are doing a fantastic job of reminding us of this with your little visits into our homes every day. I will endeavour to do more of this every day!!!!
    Fortsat god dag!! :) Helen

Every night after dinner, we would get the teapot out and sit and talk...when our son was young and wanted to stall his homework he would get my husband talking and put on another pot of tea! I caught on to him and said no one pot of tea and then homework...we all loved that time together and he speaks of it often.

Today, I lit my candles, I bought flowers from the farmers' market, I gathered my knitting stuff in a beautiful basket and set it next to my place on the sofa, and I even knit a cup cozy for my coffee mug. That's how your videos have inspired me. Thank you.

I like to hammock hygge. I used to think you couldn’t lay in a hammock in cold weather, then I grabbed a down-filled sleeping bag and gave it a try. So nice to be cozy and snuggled up in a gently swinging hammock under the trees 👍🏼

I am always switching off overhead lights and turning on little lamps. I always tell the family.."It's more COZY." I have never heard of "hygge" before. I must practice it without realizing it. I say "cozy" A LOT. Amazing.

Hygge costs nothing but the willingness to be hyggely. I love taking five minutes to enjoy life. I love this video: thank you, Diane, for putting the case for easy hygge across. It costs nothing, needs nothing more than friends and a bit of food, but does our spirits the world of good.

Here in Montana, the afghans are unpacked to snuggle on the sofa. The extra down duvet is now on the bed with cosy pillows. The rocker is pulled up to the gas fireplace for Alan to read. We just use flameless candles on the windowsills for safety( we are older). My tea shelf is lined with my favorites. WE finishing up putting in our emergency stores. I still am happy from donating office supplies to the local school and Christmas items to the Christian thrift store near us. As we are older , we need so little now and so much fun to share!

I´m from Denmark, and like a fish knows nothing about water - I know nothing about "hygge" So I tried defining it; well... You can´t buy "hygge" - Hygge is being yourself, with the ones you love, or even alone - totally at peace with everything - even our sorrows! - or.. maybe it´s just feeling gratitude and love!

I live in the southern US, so our winters are very mild. But even though we don't have cold, dark winters, it is darker and I love to be cozy. I was not familiar with the word "hygge" but I totally understand the concept. We don't use overhead lights either, we use lamps exclusively and candles also. I also love to cuddle up by our fire with a soft throw! Enjoyed the video! Denmark sounds like a wonderful place- I don't like the cold, so maybe summer time for me!

I am totally with you on disliking the overhead light. I find warm lamp light so much more comfortable. I'm in Canada, and we probably don't get quite as many hours of darkness in the winter, but we definitely struggle with the winter blahs. We could totally benefit from adopting Hygge as Canadians. This is my new favourite word ❤

I haven't been under a rock, more like stranded in a desert cause I am just hearing the word Hygge. but listening to what it entails, its something I have always practiced in my home but I just called it cozy, warm, zen, snuggly, etc...I am pagan so candles and candle making are my everything, I have never cared for over head lights, I suffer migraines since childhood so lamps have always been my go to...also I keep night lights all around my home. I don't go through harsh winters but I do have a few months of cold and yes I have always felt the way to survive such times is pillows, blankets, soft lighting, fuzzy socks a must and dressing warm and a hot beverage in your hands to warm the belly and a puppy by your side...I am an avid reader and I have a sick habit of smelling and touching and looking at my books...electronics for me have their time and place but while I am at home, they are not of use...a rule that sadly has had to be implemented to keep living in the basic realm of the present moment....but thank you for this video...in todays society we have to indulge in such simplicities or we can loose our minds....thank you so much for sharing, I just found your video since I have learned the word Hyggee and I look forward to exploring your channel...Yuletide blessings to you and yours :)

Your energy is very warm and hyggely😄I just learned the word hygge over Christmas time. Before that our daughter 5yrs old at the time now 10yrsold would call anything that she thought to be cozy "Homeloving" curtains, pretty table cloth, scentsy, candles, roasting hot dogs&marshmallows in our fireplace, camping, snuggling together in a soft cozy or blanket and much much more...So we embraced her word&use it often. I have been intentional to make our home&myself homeloving. We still use her word to describe this way of living as well as the danish Hygge!Nice video!

The Dutch definitely have hygge too, maybe not quite so much as the Danes, but I fondly remember enjoying tea time in the afternoon (every day) with my parents, and sometimes relatives who dropped in for that on weekends (we also drank hot tea in the summer; iced tea was something I did not know until I moved to the U.S.) , and coffee time (also every day) after dinner around 8 p.m.

I need to incorporate Hygge into my life!!! Now with all the LED light bulbs here in the US I find that they are not cozy feeling at all. I want my old fashioned warm lightbulbs. Wonder if I’m just purchasing the wrong ones that have this sort of office fluorescent light feeling, i despise them. I wish winterbathing was a “thing” here in the US. I live in the Midwest and if I went winter bathing I would get arrested lol. I bet there are places in ocean towns that allow skinny dipping (nude beaches) but I live right in the middle of the country so I have no access to the ocean. We do have a private lake on our property so maybe I will have to give it a go and hope the fishies do not nibble on me lol.

One thing to understand,- hygge is NOT a specific thing or ritual you do. You do not necessarily NEED candlelights though they always help thanks to the softer light the candles provide.
Hygge is a state of being with one another, a state of mind.
Five men sitting on what most women would consider a pile of junk watching the sports or a good movie or whatever with or without beer all thinking and feeling this setting with my mates is just perfect for whatever reason are all feeling and experiencing hygge!
You can do it alone, you can do it with family or friends or even with strangers,- it´s a feeling of " perfectness " about the situation you´re in even if the setting is ever so humble,- it´s a state of being,- everthing in your world right now is hyggeligt,- literally meaning - like hygge.

This sounds a bit like the Dutch word 'gezellig'. Only the Dutch don't often make such an effort of it. There is a saying here wich translates like, act normal, that's crazy enough. I think Dutch people are too down to earth to really get the concept of hygge, but I would love to learn to take time for this. Thank you!

I loved learning about hygge since I have never heard it. Sounds wonderful! I would be much too embarrassed to go skinnydipping. I wouldn't want my friends to see me naked and I don't think I'd want to see them either. How do you get over that? I really would like to know. Also do others feel like me or am I the exception?

It was difficult at first but when you are together with women and men of all different ages, shapes and sizes (some with mastectomy scars, etc) it is actually a very humbling experience. I am much less self conscious about my body now than I was in my 20s and I am grateful that I am physically in good health. When I see the 80 and 90 year old ladies and gents bathing beside me in the icy sea, it is so very inspiring!

Is that where we get our word "Hug" from? Yes, I thought of gemutlich. :D

I think you explained it very well. It’s such a hard thing to explain because it’s more a state of mind, not one thing, but it’s a word that covers so many small things in life that is just nice and make ones mood better.
Btw you said that you are not a flylady mentor anymore, but I keep getting suggestions on Facebook with a free Skype call with a mentor, and it’s always you picture and you that I can choose to speak to.. I have not made an appointment yet, but I am intrigued

That's funny, Stine - I see the adverts too and get a surprise (fright?!) when my face pops up! LOL! I'm afraid the Premium advert and website are very out of date (there are about 11 mentors who are still working for the company, out of the 24 mentioned on the website). If you need anything, Jessica (Flylady's niece), is very sweet and can help out. Her email address is dingding@flyladypremium.com

+Aussie Organiser Very toning! Though sometimes, when it's minus 5c/23f outside, I'm glad I have my asthma inhaler with me when I'm winterbathing 😄❄🌊

Hi Diane, what's the best way to clean a Thermos flask?

I'm afraid you'll have to ask Mr Google...I usually only keep boiling water in mine (I brew the tea in the tea cup), so it doesn't need cleaning out.

You can´t buy "hYgge" - Hygge is being yourself, with the ones you love, or even alone - totally at peace with everything - even our sorrows! - or.. maybe it´s just feeling gratitude and love!

You explained the dutch word gezellig really well. It's just a little strange that you pronounced it as hygge. ;) Gezellig hoor!
