One game that makes my list that few have heard of because it's not on Steam is Starsector. It may look a little dated because it has top down ship combat, but it has great combat and strong role playing elements. The ships are customizable with different weapons and other gear. The shielding system is pretty innovative and makes combat more interesting than just close and fire. You can even colonize worlds where you can build shipyards to make your own ships. Starsector also has an active mod community.
I am looking at buying it. It is 15 bucks, right? Also, How does it compare to Endless Sky? Is it similar? I am hoping Starsector is more fucsed on bounty hunting, customization, and action rather than story, but missions are welcome.
@@edwardferrari7342 If you called Endless Sky a short story, Starsector would be a novel. While you can control a single ship as in Endless Sky, you will likely command an entire fleet in Starsector. The ship sizes are fighter, frigate, destroyer, cruiser, and capital ship with carriers in the larger classes. You also have various sizes of troop transports, tankers and freighters. There are three levels of tech for ships and several factions with their own flavor and unique ships. You will start with a single ship or maybe a small fleet of ships, but you can buy, salvage, or even steal ships. Once you have some working colonies, you can build your own. I don't bother manually piloting my ship in combat any more. The auto pilot/combat AI is pretty darn good so I only give strategic orders (capture this command point, escort this carrier, retreat, etc.), although you can micromanage your command ship if you want. The rest you just give strategic orders to anyway. You can customize all of the ships with weapons (ballistic, energy, and missiles), sensors, and special equipment. Each ship has a standard weapon loadout, but you can modify it however you want. The game has some interesting nuances. For example, I love that the game uses transponders. Turning off your transponder reduces your ECM signature and faction patrols will assume you are a pirate, but sometimes it's necessary to sneak into a starbase or sneak by a fleet. The game also asks you when your transponder is off if you want to turn it on before entering a faction controlled sector. You can also "go dark" really reducing your signature, but you move very slowly. The game has very strong economics as well. Your ship needs supplies (food, uniforms, WD-40 and duct tape). and fuel. Running out of either of those is problematic although not necessarily a lost cause. Fuel is only used in hyperspace, and if you run out of fuel, you can send out a distress call and hope somebody nice helps you out, or you could drift towards a gravity source and eventually end up in a system where you can scavenge, kill, or trade for fuel. A properly prepare fleet should have no problem exploring or pirate hunting in the depths of space for extended periods of time. So, are you getting the picture? Starsector has amazing detail and replay ability. Just don't blame me when you become addicted, or end up drifting in space, out of gas, or a Remnant fleet blows you out of the sky, or the Luddic church demands a tithe. Good luck, cadet.
Ohhh you missed a brilliant game: Darkstar One. You control a fighter type ship with unknown alien origin, which you can upgrade with certain key items, that you get along the main story mode and others by doing some exploration. Graphics are a bit dated, but the combat is amazing. All in all, great list. Will definitely try out a few games i saw here and would like to recommend everyone to try out Rebel Galaxy. Instead of the usual dogfighting with fighters, you have capital ship battles, with massive broadsides and missiles barrages. And it has an amazing rock & roll soundtrack that really gets you in the mood to blast giant ships apart. Well done.
Elle dangerous, fairly regular updates?.. You need to have a chat with your researchers because that one statement is so far from correct that it ruined the rest of the video..
I don't consider new community decision gameplay, bug fixes, optimisation nor the slowly evolving space bug story as updates. Believe it or not I play the game and have since release so my comments perhaps are due to fatigue with fdev 🤣
A game of my childhood. First time i see anyone mentioning it. I recommend the previous games too(Parkan Iron Strategy1-2) if you haven't played already. Comes with great manual- almost a sci fi novel inside.
Hopefully someone mentioned this, but the universe in starbound is not completely randomly generated. It has a seed that is the same for everyone if the game is in its vanilla state, and gets altered with mods that add content. Coordinates can be shared between people with the same modlist, and the found planets and systems will be the same - the difference is that you spawn in a random coordinate, and the maximum coordinates are VERY far from the center. If alternate Dimensions were implemented in Starbound, it would be as big as No Man's Sky.
I love that you mentioned the game Freelancer. This is where my love for these kinds of games started! I recommend anyone viewing this to also view Star Citizen. Although this is not a Steam game, it is still something worth taking time to view.
The most favorite and atmospheric game for me remains Space Rangers 1-2. The game gives what I can't find in new games so far.The living world and the economy as the basis and very soulful quests and the atmosphere of the game itself. There is of course a re-creation of the game in the Steam "space rangers hd a war apart" I can't say that it is worse than the original games, it's just different and somewhat simplified. If you want a real adventure and a challenge to your spirit, I advise you to find the original space ranger 1. You will live in this world and realize that the game is alive.
Great games, played many and loved. Now we have also Starfield which is great, I love the graphics and ship personalization with full detailed interiors.

Legendary is an accurate term for Freelancer. I have to confirm that. That time 20 years ago (2003) the game had no graphical competition. I played it on and off for 12 years.... and it was a joy to turn on every time. A simple, catchy game. You just wanted to play it, explore the universe. Today's games are extremely cluttered, there's too much, too much confusion, too many options... Freelancer reminds me of the movie "Ready Player One" where "James Halliday" was all about the Easter egg. It's not about winning, there's nothing to win in Freelancer. It's just playing, and playing, exploring, looking for "Jump Holes",bases, planets, better ships, wrecks with the best weapons. I remember when I messed up my reputation and couldn't buy a Titan battleship, so I had to settle for a ship called the Eagle.
Startingwith Freelancer was a great move. It has a modded RP server in Discovery for anyone wanting to try, which is very modernized. Still hard to top, to this day. I also love No Man's Sky, Starbound and I have a love/hate relationship with X4. Will deffintely check some others on this list.
Once you mentioned Star Citizen at about 0:29 that was a deal breaker for that game. Nice how the devs at Star Citizen gave all their fans and backers the middle finger in 2022. I do have a few of the other games already and this list was really cool :)
There are periods when you can play it for free for about 2 weeks or so. You don't need to spend more then 45$ to play the game without any restrictions, however I don't recommend it for most ppl for now because it's still in alpha with bugs and there's a steep learning curve. Having said that if you have the patience and understand what your getting into it's the best space sim even at it current state IMO.
Eve's economy was destroyed years ago, and to gain skills can draw out months or even years, of course sped up by P2W. but as mentioned the economy is ruined by a rich guy years ago spending millions completely offsetting what things are worth with hyper inflation. funny they didn't mention that Empyrion has block by block constructions of hover vessels, small vessels, capitol vessels and bases, and with the Reforged Eden mod soon to have massive capitol vessels. and each play through whether single player or multi player will have different experiences as it is generated off of seeds changing the entire galaxy (hundreds even thousands of solar systems to explore). I thought it was silly and yes graphics are a strain on weaker systems and not top end. but has become an addiction, specially the building.

You didn't include spaceborne and its not only better than everything here its made by 1 guy
playing spaceborne 1 right now and I totally agree! I can't believe one guy made this. It's so fun and has all the great exploration I could hope for. Can't wait to beat this and jump into Spaceborne 2 : )
and where is Star Citizen ? This is one of the best Spacegames
Where is Star Citizen? A question for the ages.
SC jajaja yes where is it?
lmao no
Nothing from the Starpoint Gemini series? that's kinda sad.
Chris Roberts did not finish Freelancer either, the company took the game from him to be able to finish snd launch... SC is nothing but a promise, an old snd expensive promise
Why do you have Between the Stars on the list twice? Short memory? LoL
No love for Spacebourne 2?
Chris Roberts didn't do shit on Freelancer. He got kicked off the project and then it got done. No Man's Sky does not have 18 quntillion planets, it has about 18 quintollion copies of about 10 different planets.
Missed starsector.
X4:Foundations 😌👌🏻
Also, was this narrated by a robovoice? The emphasis was very strange in some sentences.
This video reads and sounds like it was done by AI
Thank goodness I thought I was the only one.
What's game on thumbnail?
Vast = fav word xd
Would someone please make freelancer 2
There is only one real open world space game - EVE Online
'Real' game, heh.
I'm just looking for something to replace Elite with since they abandoned consoles.
I really wish console gamers got more love from the space game developers. There's just not that many available on console : (
check out "Chorus" game
Where's Spore?
Dont forget about starfeild in semptember
Starfailed

Starfield, despite being released in September, will be ready to play in April next year probably.

1)Разнообразный коллектив который не всегда подстать себе найдешь;
2)В приложении дискорд на жалобы сквозь пальцы смотрят.могут и не отреагировать;
Discord.
Discord.
Privateer 3!?!?!?
Starforce
KSP didn't make it to top 25?
no star citizen? seriously?
ONLY because it hasn't been released. It's an extremely beautiful and realistic space simulator game that has two things going against it:
1. been in development for many years, but never released
2.unoptimized, will stutter and lag on the best of machines
bro u forget ksp 2 and star citizen
star citizen
Star citizen??
BtS actualy double so its 24 game and not all of them about space and open world...
Co op games?
KSP?!?!?
no starpoint series, weird.
StarField is also One of the best Games
