Excel - AutoComplete for Drop-down List - New Feature Coming to M365
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июл 2024
- Putting in data in Excel can be a slow process and errors can be made. AutoComplete and dropdown list are two features currently available in Excel. AutoComplete happens when you start typing in an item you have used previously in a column. Drop-down lists are created with Data Validation and ensure only the correct items that belong in a column are entered. For example, a department column shouldn't show the Accounting department as "Accounting" and later as "Acct". Rolling out for Microsoft 365 users is AutoComplete and Drop-down list combined. This is a great time-saving feature. What is especially nice is the feature can match text from anywhere in the list. For example, if you have a list of 300 cars and you start typing Tahoe, Excel will pick up that it is in the drop-down list as Chevrolet Tahoe. It can pick up from the start, middle, or end of the list.

THANK YOU!! I'm feeling overwhelmed and need your SIMPLIFIED explanation of a process I keep forgetting.
You are so welcome!
I always learn something new from your videos. I use drop-down lists all the time and wasn't aware of the new AutoComplete feature - great if you have long lists. Thanks for sharing.
Maree, thank you! It is a nice feature. It just rolled out recently. If you have M365 and don't have it now, you will soon.
@@ChrisMenardTraining , I have the Insider Beta channel. Another thing I found is that you can now type in leading zeros and it displays them without formatting as text.
Had this feature a few months ago but now it’s gone. Did excel get rid of this? I have the latest version of excel, so not sure what’s going on.
same thing happened to me it literally just disappeared
duhhh! they can't add the feature if it's already there! silly 😂
In my Excel file, there are already lists to choose from on each cell but it won't show what can be filled in from those cells. It only tries to autofill with information that's elsewhere in the column is there a fix for this?
It's about time! I have made sheets do it with VBA for certain things but will be nice to do it in the actual cell your working in without spending hours making it happen.
According to this answer from an employee on the Microsoft Tech Community on Apr 27 2023 the new auto complete feature have been disabled temporary while they work on fixing an issue with it.
You can find the answer by googling "Prash Shirolkar autocomplete not working"
when does this come out? I have a list of 15,000 account names i need to be able to select a account name but after i start typing a few of the letters
Hi Chris.
This is great. I implemented it and it worked for a bit and then stopped working. I'm using Office 2019. Why? Any ideas?
Great! Thanks a lot. That was really helpful.
Is the data validation auto complete feature coming to Mac users of 365?
Doesn't work on desktop here, February 2023. Seems like this hasn't rolled out for a lot of countries/areas.
Same 😢 I really need something like this too. I have a huge list of 600 people and don’t want to have to scroll through every time. I was so hopeful this was going to solve my problem but no luck.
I have 2 lap, this function only works in the lap with Windows 10
Thank you for what you do.
I appreciate that
This feature was working for me last week and not it's gone? What happened?
I'll believe it when I see it: When will this feature be available? Not having autofill is incredibly frustrating, and there's no easy way to set it up without complex VBA.
Hi Chris, I have the latest version of excel however my AutoComplete for Drop-down List doesnt work, any idea why?
Im the same
Thank you so very much. It saved me a lot of time. Even Chat GPT couldn't help me!
very nice feature, thank you so much...
You are welcome
Any idea when this is coming out? It doesn't seem to be in the current version of Excel.
It is being tested in Beta mode for M365 Insiders right now. No date, but usually, 3 to 9 months is when they start rolling out these features to all M365 users.
Is this feature still working for you Mr. Menard? I have M365 beta channel and it does not work. It would make my life easier if it did.
Thank you
Thanks for the video Chris. I have 365 but don't seem to be able to have the auto-complete feature. best regards fro Johannesburg South Africa, Fergus
same here, I use Excel every day and I have never seen this work and I have Office 365 and am in the office insiders program
Same here - I wish they'd answer why.
It's not working for me,
What version is required, has it been released yet?
How to get the autocomplete feature??
not working for me, is there any solution
Hi @chris Mendard, This feature started working two weeks ago was operational on all my files. Today, suddenly the features stopped working with different licenses for Office365 (personal, professional and academic). But is operational when I open the files on office online. Do you have any clue how to solve it to make it work in desktop?
I am having same issue today
Same here
Same issue here
Yes and me as well. Did they turn it off??
Same here. WHAT HAPPENED IT WAS SO EASY!?
I'm a 365 user. It was auto-populating from my list until today. I feel like I've done something wrong. I even restored to a time saved yesterday, and it isn't auto-populating from any of my lists. Have I messed up my settings?
i have the same issue. it was working and now it is now. i am a 365 user too. . . . is it just web that works or desktop too ?
When I do this step by step in our version of 365 its doesn't to the autocomplete for the dropdown box? (365 MSO (16.0.13127.21363) 64 bit
In my MAC working but not in CPU i dont know why
Autocomplete works perfectly in my excel file. But when I share the exact same file with my colleague (who is using also MS 365 and the same Excel version), it does not work for her. Why is that?
What if you have an empty cell between the cities? in my case alt down arrow doesnt pick it up
just manually updated the excel, no drop down yet
booom. exactly what I needed
what a shame, didn't work
Used to have it last week in desktop and really love it, but today that I'm gonna update a file it doesn't do nothing. Only get the message warning that the value don't match with the data validation.
same! I was trying to figure out how to get it back!
same here. Did you find a solution?
Thanks man
You're welcome!
Is this feature available on Macs? My dropdown list is working great but the autofill is not.
This feature just came out and is still rolling out in testing mode, and I think only beta users for M365 have it.
@@ChrisMenardTraining ok. Thanks!
As many have already replied. This feature was working and now it is not. . . why ?
Please help me. How do , I for example using your excel sheet, have a customer ID drop down that will then fill out all of the info (last name, first name, city, etc) so that way I don’t have to fill all of that in when selecting customers
Use the drop-down to fill in the customer ID and use XLOOKUP to find the last name, first name, city, etc.
This auto fill on a drop down list does not seem to work on mine. I'm on 365. It rejects anything I type that is not a complete match with an entry in list. Finally, when I open the list it is showing blank and I have to scroll up to find my list entries
Roy, it most likely hasn't rolled out to all M365 users yet, but you will get it. Sometimes, Microsoft moves slowly.
@@ChrisMenardTraining Thanks Chris. I'll try and be patient!
@@ChrisMenardTraining It's been close to a year since it was announced. Why even announce it if it won't roll out within a year?
I have office 365 at work but this autocomplete feature does not work in my drop down lists. Any idea why it doesnt work?
Yes. It is rolling out, but Microsoft seems to be taking their time with this feature. I wish I knew why Microsoft was taking so long, but I don't.
@@ChrisMenardTraining Thank you. I was pulling my hair out trying to understand why it was not working. Is there another solution?
When it does become available, how do we get it?
It will roll out automatically to M365 users. No date has been set, but it is coming out.
Autocomplete not working in dropdown lists 😢
Autocomplete dropdown list stopped working
I have Excel 365 but stil no auto searchable dropdown list. How can I enable it?
It is only for M365 users.
@@ChrisMenardTraining I have Microsoft 365 Apps for business, shouldn't this version have the searchable dropdown list? But it isn't working for me.
@@ChrisMenardTraining It all works fine but i dont get the "narrow down" options as I type :(
When will it be available?
I'm guessing late 2022 or early 2023. They like to test it for a new months and see if there are any issues. I found one already and reported it.
It is working in online mode but not working offline excel 365.
Most likely it hasn't rolled out to you for the desktop version. It is being tested right now with Beta users.
@@ChrisMenardTraining I have the same behavior, desktop does not work but online does.
Unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft turned off this feature. :(
Still running. I just used it. It is possible they haven't rolled this out to all M365 users yet. Sometimes they take forever. drive.google.com/file/d/1Qvd9DC8OJ2-Yn2cGv9mnLMfpTI05BDKr/view?usp=drivesdk
Still not Available?
tried, unfort no
google sheets already been doing this for a long time
use awesome google sheets
Is not working for me!!!
Very possible you don't have it yet. It is rolling out slowly to M365 users.
The dvl doesn’t expand with the table added values without changing to reference formula. Is there a work around to use a table reference?
