What's the definition of epic? Schindler's List, although one of the best films on this list, doesn't have the epic sweep of a Doctor Zhivago or El Cid. I'd pick either of them, Cleopatra or A Passage To India before Reds.
Charlton Heston career was interesting,he is in two of the biggest movies of all time, than later in his career he stars in movies like Soylent green, planet of the apes such a wide range of movies
I believe “All Quiet” is one of the few pictures filmed as a talkie and then re-edited as a silent with intertitles. This was done so the picture could be shown in more small town theatres that had not yet been converted for sound projection, probably due to the deepening of the Great Depression. Also, it was cheaper, in the days before sound dubbing was common, to substitute inter-titles in foreign languages than to shoot multiple versions with different casts fluent in the language of the target market. Both versions still exist and the silent version is included with the Blu-Ray release.
The fact that Kubrick hated Spartacus only makes the story from one of the cast members from Full Metal Jacket even funnier. Apparently Kubrick kept a large group of extras for a battle scene waiting in the hot sun for an hour while he was up on a crane platform with lenses planning the shot. One of the extras shouted for him to hurry up. Kubrick came down and reamed out the whole group. Then he went back up on the platform. Shortly, someone called out again. Kubrick came down and demanded to know who called out. After a few minutes one of the extras stood and said, "I am Spartacus." He was followed by another and then another until the extras had recreated the scene from Spartacus. Kubrick gave up.
Good to see Saving Private Ryan and (despite its 7:14 haters) Titanic. I like Warren Beatty and Reds is good but top 10? I watched it upon release but never again. Dr Zhivago and maybe 2001 would have been better picks for me.
Given all the films that have been made in the more than 100 years of cinema, narrowing a list to 10 would be impossible for me. But while I like Ben Hur, it wouldn't be on this list for me. Neither would Reds, way overrated (but I might feel that way because I don't care a lick for communism or what it has done to this world). Saving Private Ryan is a great film. Never did like the Titanic, a movie longer than it took for the ship to sink. Spartacus is quite a spectacle, true. Gone with the Wind, hard to deny that one or Lawrence of Arabia, a movie that if it's on I'm watching it.
''Titanic'? An overrated, schmaltzy weepie geared to teenage girls. Though not exactly an 'epic', 1958`s 'A Night To Remember' is the REAL deal on the story. There`s 'A Night to Remember' and everything else!
Did you know that the 1956 version of "The Ten Commandments" was a remake? The original, made in 1923, was directed by (drum roll, please) Cecil B. DeMille. As for "Titanic," it had so little to do with the Titanic that I got the impression that it was intended to be a movie version of "The Love Boat;" but, when the ship accidentally sank, James Cameron changed the name to "Titanic" to keep from losing money on it.
Of course, none of these come close to the epic stature of the 1965 Russian release of War and Peace, a 6 1/2 hour movie many consider the greatest epic of all time.
Well they are API choices. A=American. Sergei Bondarchuk's film is a master piece. Wrangler should do a top 10 "Non-English" films or Top-10 "World Films". So many great films that we call Foreign Language Films; Seven Samurai, Ran, Solarus, Z, The Wages of Fear, Yojimbo, Rashomon, M, Battle of Algiers.
I love ‘Casablanca’. Possibly my favorite film of all time. However, I don’t think it qualifies as a ‘epic’. It’s a small, intimate story, set in the context of an epic time in the world.
Surprised Cleopatra was missing, Red's did not impress me at all. I enjoy the spectacle a movie affords. although with the combined use of computers..massive battle scenes may be simulated. Epic battles like in Troy, or the fictional Return of the King. are impressive even thought they compromise reality. Ben Hur was breathtaking I saw it when it came out, I was eleven at the time and not christian, a large part of the story, I now realize, went over my head, but the Chariot Race was spectacular.
I saw Ben Hur at the cinema a few years ago. I'd loved it as a child but it was a deadly, talky bore except for the race which was stupendous. Even the sea battle is very phony compared to the silent version
Agreed. I saw “Cleopatra” in the theatre as part of that picture’s 50th anniversary re-release about ten years ago. The restoration was visually incredible, and it also restored the picture to its original 4 hour + running time. I was in a very comfortable auditorium with plush reclining seats and, well, you can guess…
Epic needs to mean more than grand movie. I would add it needs to be watchable over and over. Reds isn't watchable the first time thru. Sparticus too is tedious. How about Dr Zhivago, for reds and The Alamo for Sparticus.
one of my least favorite genres, along with romances and screwball comedies. If by epics you mean ,long films, then Lang's silent Dr, Mabuse the Gambler would be by far my favorite. 4 1/2 hrs long and not boring for one second. (You can see I'm far from the mainstream)
Thirty nine steps Robert Donat Godfather 2 Kind hearts and coronets Magnificent 7 The Dambusters Pimpernel Smith Doctor Zhivago The Big Sleep Chinatown Far from the madding crowd Julie Christie
Not only should Seven Samurai be on this list, it should be in number 1 slot. I thought at first these were just for American movie but Lawrence is foreign made so disregarding 7 samurai is a shame especially since it was the first epic movie and still is the best.
Sorry, this video is definitely not representative of the 10 greatest movies with so many GREAT movies left off this video. I’m finding more crappy videos by people who should not be posting videos! There’s way too far more great and famous movies to say the least. Limiting this to the 10 greatest movies of all time. 😂 remember, there’s different genres and styles and directors and actors that made movies better and greater. You should have done (Part 1,Part 2 ,etc. ). Lastly, using the word “Epic “ is rather misleading, vague and ambiguous.
The only movie I disagree with is Lawrence of Arabia. I find it ponderous and boring. I just couldn't work up the energy to care about what happened to these people.
If it were me, I'd get rid of Reds, Titanic, Gone with the Wind. Not a fan of Warren Beatty, once the film moves to "the story" Titanic bored me and I've always hated Gone with the Wind.
I am in the minority when it comes to some of these movies. I have read countless books on The Titanic and knew in advance that it would not be true to the facts. This was a fictionalized version and I knew I would not like it. When I finally watched it, I fast-forwarded it and I was very disappointed. Heston was miscast in both epics. Moses and Ben-Hur were quiet men whereas he is pompous and arrogant. Just my two centimes.
What's the definition of epic? Schindler's List, although one of the best films on this list, doesn't have the epic sweep of a Doctor Zhivago or El Cid. I'd pick either of them, Cleopatra or A Passage To India before Reds.
Dr Zhivago was a great movie, greater than some of those on the list. Was it considered too much to give David Lean two movies?
I agree about Dr. Zhivago. It should have been on this list.
It is also a more interesting depiction of the Russian Revolution, and less preachy, than "Reds".@@nurselibby96
Charlton Heston career was interesting,he is in two of the biggest movies of all time, than later in his career he stars in movies like Soylent green, planet of the apes such a wide range of movies
Religion and Sci Fi. Interesting mix. He did do some westerns as well:)

Interesting, thanks!
The Longest Day 1962, Patton 1970.
Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape, Apocalypse Now
Aka the longest film.
Short attention span?

Of these, Ben Hur and Gone With the Wind are the greatest.
REDS?!?! Are you serious? Um, no.
I think Quo Vadis is a great epic movie.
Good to see Saving Private Ryan and (despite its 7:14 haters) Titanic. I like Warren Beatty and Reds is good but top 10? I watched it upon release but never again. Dr Zhivago and maybe 2001 would have been better picks for me.

I saw Lawrence of Arabia at the last Cinemascope Theater in Phoenix. The desert was so big and dry I had to get soda refills two times.
And a couple bathroom breaks? :)

Its such a personal choice issue. Thats why I made a video on my own favorites in the channel.
@@famouspeople63 Very much so. Enjoy your videos.

My favorite genre; anybody agree? Btw: AFI is correct: Lawrence is the best movie ever created
If you were going to pick an epic Roman film,it should have been one of " Quo Vadis" or 'Fall of the Roman Empire".
Did you know that the 1956 version of "The Ten Commandments" was a remake? The original, made in 1923, was directed by (drum roll, please) Cecil B. DeMille. I have only seen some of the films on this list. But I agree that they belong on the list!
Titanic was the most overrated film of all time. It was a stupid, insipid story that undermined the real stories of heroism from the tragedy.
My favorite movies Casablanca,Once upon a time in the west,The train, Snatch.
2001: A Space Odyssey belongs on this list.
Epics generally were about historical events but not always
Wasn’t Reds a huge bomb at the box office?
Yes, many films were at time of release but gained critical acclaim in time and cult following.
Anthony Mann's El Cid!
See my video on my favorite Epics in my channel
Definitely should have included "Dr. Zhivago"
I fell asleep while watching Titanic. Just saying
Most epics on re watching I will nod off.
I would've loved to see a comedy on this list.
It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World qualifies.
Sorry, “Reds” and “Titanic” were and are rubbish by any standard.
War and Peace 1966,1967
El Cid 1961,, The Alamo 1960
Worthy additions, thanks

Casablanca being left off this list is atrocious, and a travesty to all films created.
But it wasn't an epic. It was a small picture about 90 minutes long. I love it but it doesn't fit the category.
@@chereecargill355 other list of the 100 greatest films it always #2 or better, Citizen Cane is usually #1, so it's as epic as it gets

How the West Was Won
The Great Escape
The Longest Day
Around the World in 80 Days
Yes, I just mentioned in another comment, may be a follow on video, thanks!
I would agree with all of those except Around the World in 80 Days. It was one of David Niven's least inspired performances.
Mostly old movies before all the crap they put out now
