I think it's like the black album in that sense. A lot of hardcore fans of the earlier stuff didn't like the black album but it's grown on many of them over time. This feels similar in that sense but instead of this album being a new sound it's more like a marriage of all their sounds from over the years

I’m pretty sure that Room of Mirrors section where you said “we need more of THIS kirk”… was actually James. James’ solo work has been more consistently melodic than Kirk’s since Death Magnetic (look up the James version of Suicide and Redemption and compare the full solo to the one that was put on the album).
Also, the more you listen to Inamorata, the more songs you’ll start to notice being referenced.
I hear little crumbs of Outlaw Torn, My Friend of Misery, Orion, Bleeding Me… and the verse riff is “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz.

This album would be a 10/10 if someone pushed Kirk a little bit more, like Bob Rock did back in the days of the Black Album. Black Album, Load and Reload have some memorable melodic solos, and I wish 72 seasons was like that too. Unfortunately Kirk just became lazy. As a musician I can tell James and Lars were not delivering their best, like, 15 years ago, but they are definetly taking music seriously, and both of them have improved significantly over the past decade. Rob has always been consistent. But Kirk.... oh man... it hurts me to say, because he was the guy who inspired me to play, but Kirk is a retired musician in activity. He dragged this album down.

Hetfield is absolutely no doubt the MVP on this album, arguably moreso than any other Metallica album. His vocals are just on another level, but even more importantly are the riffs he pumps out which are ridiculously strong here.
Kirk of course has his moments in the harmony sections sprinkled throughout the album, but it's hard not to also think he may be the weakest member currently after you hear the 10th pentatonic shreddy solo unnecessarily drenched in wah.
Lars is super tight here and while the production on the drums makes the hi-hats louder than I think was needed, I still think his performance is pretty good, and Rob does some great work too.
After letting this entire album sit with me over the last few days I genuinely don't think there's a single bad track on this thing. Maybe a couple 'meh' ones (Chasing Light + If Darkness...), but it's consistently strong IMO. Solid 8/10 album for me.

Pretty wild contrast with Hardwired. Hardwired had a lot more variety, came off as more "fun", and had more low points but also more memorable tracks. 72 Seasons is more serious and brooding throughout, and also more monotone. It's more consistently good, but perhaps less memorable. That said, Inamorata is a career top 10 track. Accomplishes what they wanted to in Load/Reload and finally realizes the potential of the sound they developed on those albums.

We underestimate Kirk's greatness when him & James are jamming. It is one of the greatest guitar rock duos in history. The solos will grow on you & make sense. Though playing the high wawa chord repetively is redundant & unnecessary. That is about it. One or two solos were off, I know one where he loses focus & goes on an acid trip. Totally no direction, then he snaps out of it. The guy has extreme ability, he just needs some structure sometimes.

Great review and reaction! My personal opinion is that its a very mature album with deep messages from someone who has been there. I also think they could have gone and made another double album, it doesnt feel "finished" and could use another two songs or so. Lastly, I am not too fond of the sound production, while many have praised it I find the bell-sound from the highhat to be too noticeable in most songs and it rings too much.

Hetfield is amazing on this album. I think he could improve the lyrics even more, nonetheless his performance on this album is great. It gives me hope that if one day (hopefully not too late) he decides to make an album with Mustaine, together they can create great music.

I did do Fortitude, but never had a chance to do Iron Maiden, it is listed on my catch up reviews for ones I missed

Pretty good reaction but I swear to God, I'm beyond through with people going on about Kirk's solos and THE G*DDAMN WAH PEDAL. It took everything I had to not turn this reaction off. Get at me when you have platinum albums and a global fan base.

And I'm guessing we aren't allowed to say anything about Lars masterclass on St. Anger as well?!

whatever shortcomings kirk may have with his soloing on this record...he more than makes up for with his riffs. Chasing Light is incredible.

@@kmvoss that has nothing to do with this. These solos are absolutely fine. Some are great, some not so much. Are any bad? Not at all. Regardless, this guy thinks he's Joe Satriani because he can play OTHER PEOPLE'S SOLOS. The arrogance translates through the screen. I will say, he chilled a bit on the vids after this one, so I'm glad for that. Nobody tunes in for arrogance and negativity.

As much as I love Metallica and understand they have matured as a band. I just don't think this album had much for me as a fan. Most of the songs on this album sound the same, sound repetitive and solos are just meh.
Its better than Lulu that's for sure and even that was also not great

Agreed, some spots aren’t “amazing” but overall it’s still pretty great
