Been watching Steve Lav for 6 years he’s taken me from hvac school back in 2014 when I didn’t even know how to use a meter to now where I still don’t know how but I’m having fun!
The more I watch you work the more I learn. What is routine to you is simply amazing to me. Learning so I won't be totally in the dark when my gas furnace is replaced, or whenever it needs service. Respect Mr. Lavimoniere.
Dirt packed in the squirrel cage causes vibrations that sound like that. Homes that do lots of deep fry cooking and have cigarette smokers seem to produce greasy dirt that really likes to stick all over those cages.
Man the sound of that Goodman brings back so many memories. Had nearly identical Goodman in my old house. Worked in it many times. Vacuum switch, exhaust blower, squirrel cage fan, igniter, main board. A lot broke on that Goodman and I learned so much from it. Then I moved to an apartment where the heat is not my concern. But wow does the Goodman sound bring back memories. I am getting teary eyed. Good times.
I had a Bryant twinned unit do that. It was in a tight place on three sides that I couldn’t do much to stop it. I had to slide a small wedge on the ducting to the furnace to quite it. That was 20 years ago. One indicator it’s duct work is by removing the panel cover and it goes away.
Before I work on anything I like to pull the blower and visually inspect the heat exchanger to make sure it's not cracked, makes no sense to repair something with a cracked heat exchanger
Have a Goodman similar to that and the blower always made a bit of extra noise - just chalked it up to being a Goodman. Took it apart to clean it this summer and lo and behold there was a bit of insulation stuck in the blower wheel. Took it out and now I can't even hear it running. Seems a bit weird for it to be silent after all these years. I'm a bit shocked the bearings have held out!
@@MrVagabaga the man is right. I was surprised he didn't have a universal mounting kit. Wanting to use OEMs is all well and good but sometimes you have to be a little more practical than BRAND LOYAL. Steve had to travel two hours to get that OEM. I wonder if he passed it on to the customer.
Excellent content, I have learned so much from your videos. Been working on cars since a child learning from my father who was a bus mechanic. All the same in my book, keep working to stay alive
Howdy. An A/C guy on youtube learned me something about set screws and shafts. Tighten and loosen 3 times. You'll notice the screw will go in farther. ty
I have the exact same furnace. My fan went bad. It was a 1/3 hp motor but it had issues lifting the cold air upstairs when it was working correctly so I replaced it with a 1/2 hp motor and also put a new cap on it. Now the house has a slight hum when it's running but it certainly pushes the air upstairs easy.
Hp doesn’t mean anything , the rpm’s per minute will tell you if your pushing more air , typically hp can differ , but rpm’s won’t change it is an oem motor ..
Great...... hahahaha. Love the enthusiasm in Steve's voice. I say the same thing. Had to do one at 2am this past weekend while on call during a -10 cold snap
That furnace looks a lot like one we got rid of over a month ago. The draft inducer and the main fan both were replaced within the last two years. Miss Molly is looking Very stylish she sure looks happy
I know there's not a lot of leeway for where to put the electronics but I always thought it was silly that so many are mounted on the one thing in the furnace that's likely to vibrate the most. Vibration eventually wrecks circuit boards.
Vibration and water, I have a "modern" 90% efficiency gas furnace that has a circuit board directly below a low point in the exhaust pipe that drips condensate water on it when it's real cold.
Ive has a similar issue . Turned out that the squirel cage shaft mounting center support at the vanes had stress cracks and when running was out of balance causing the noise.
I usually leave the wires on the circuit board and take that bracket and move it to the side much faster , and if I’m taking wire off I just snap a picture and follow the picture with putting them back on the circuit board
On that blower I remove the blower wires from the board, pull the blower out enough to use a stubby nut driver on the screws holding the circ brd mtg brkt and tuck it over to the left and pull the blower. Putting it back I just reverse it and only have to reconnect the mtr wires. I never pull all those wires. But to each his own preference.
I had a blower vibrate like that it turn out to be the balance weight they put on the fan wheel had come off, I was able to reattach the weight in the same place and that fixed the problem.
Looks like that motor is a CCWLE. I have used a universal belly band to get out of a pinch at 2am. Good follow through on cleaning the blower wheel. Liked the video.
Noise complaint calls can always be a pain, you think you got it figured out and then the noise comes back. The only way I knew it wasn't the loose control board bracket was from the length of the video.
I don’t mark where wires go. Read schematic or trace wires out. Do enough can do it blind. Love the videos. Awesome mechanic here. Clean them burners why there and flame sensor
My hobby rebuild motors...inducer motor to lube one must take it apart..replace wicking.. soak in oil.. polishing the end shaft is a must .soak bearing bronze.. motor good for years.. spray usless... homeowner can do it.. before total failure..
Like your video. I to work on furnaces and what I do to save time if I have to disconnect wires I take a picture with my phone so I can see where all the wires go back speeds up the repair time.
She pays attention to detail more than these millennial helpers who are too busy staring at their phones instead of watching what's going on and maybe anticipate what's needed next as far as materials etc.
I have a Goodman furnace and I don’t see an air filter on the return side of the unit but I do have 2 filters in 2 rooms of the house. Is that normal or is there supposed to be a filter in the unit as well?
I had the same motor in my goodman. Mine would run for about 1hr and then it would shut down and the AC would freeze up. I had like 3 different AC guys out, and they added freon, etc, charged a bunch of money and it would freeze up again. None of them could fix it or would listen to me that the blower motor was shutting down. I just went down and measured the wires to the motor when the motor shut down it was still getting voltage. I checked the capacitor with my capacitor tester, it was good. I got the replacement motor on Amazon for $119 and put it in. I just took pictures of where all the wires went, and it's been running for about 6 years now.
Yesterday I got a call for a noisy furnace and ended up finding a squirrel head first down in the draft inducer fan exhaust. The fan was rubbing one of its front legs off.Crazy!
Anybody check the size of the return drop duct. Looks small. Will cause issues like that. Just like when you get a resonating ring thru return air grilles. Too much flow thru it will make it vibrate and "ring"
it does appear to be a good day to work inside, order new motor, travel in bad weather, come back and take your time on this job. Don't want to have to install vent pipes outside !
It's humming because it doesn't know the words. Lol next level.
Been watching Steve Lav for 6 years he’s taken me from hvac school back in 2014 when I didn’t even know how to use a meter to now where I still don’t know how but I’m having fun!
Well I'll be dog golly Molly

Miss Molly Congratulations on your certification. You need a raise form the boss.

I thought the idea of a heat exchanger failure was interesting...
Before I work on anything I like to pull the blower and visually inspect the heat exchanger to make sure it's not cracked, makes no sense to repair something with a cracked heat exchanger

Steve , United has the universal winged mounting bracket or Fasco FM55 Fasmount , then you can use a non OEM motor. A little tech tip. [Mr D]
don't be a smartass, next level mama :)

Oem motors are best. I used to use universal motors. But nothing like oem
Obviously your not in the repair business, oem product IS ALWAYS THE BEST !!’ no matter what , end of conversation!

Whew I don't think I could stand that very long, great video brother.

I am very impressed that you tool the time to clean the time to remove and clean the fan and flame sencer
7:12 That Kroil is some good stuff. "Only the Penetrant Shall Pass"
18:52 Congrats to Molly for getting her Certification! 😉😂
Great...... hahahaha. Love the enthusiasm in Steve's voice. I say the same thing. Had to do one at 2am this past weekend while on call during a -10 cold snap
Was in the buisiness for 12 yrs. Retired now and don't miss those 2AM calls one bit... LOL

You took good care of them Steven! Enjoyable video, thanks!
I usually leave the wires on the circuit board and take that bracket and move it to the side much faster , and if I’m taking wire off I just snap a picture and follow the picture with putting them back on the circuit board
Both those motors would drive me crazy whining and buzzing. Glad to see your still fixin them heaters!
Hey howdy! Kudos to you doing quick simple things -- like cleaning the flame sensor -- which extend the efficacy of your job.
Nice job. Great knowledge and installation.
Thanks for sharing.
I always carry a universal motor and belly band for motor in the truck
I tried the belly band but a leather belt was more comfortable...
Seen what you did great job love your doggie cute.
I had a blower vibrate like that it turn out to be the balance weight they put on the fan wheel had come off, I was able to reattach the weight in the same place and that fixed the problem.
Another success story and a happy customer! Happy New Year
Looks like that motor is a CCWLE. I have used a universal belly band to get out of a pinch at 2am. Good follow through on cleaning the blower wheel. Liked the video.
Great Job Lav..
I find it more easy to disconnect the motor from the MB and zip tie it up rather than disconnect all the other connections
bet you any money that thing has a cracked heat exchanger, found like 4 of them models this year.
Almost garenteed!
My thoughts exactly, that unit is due.
Give the old red light warranty wave as you leave...I love it..
Wonder why he didn’t do a co ppm check.
Damn. Some creative editing made it look like Steve just pulled those scissors out of his back pocket. Now that's what I call prepared.
Noise complaint calls can always be a pain, you think you got it figured out and then the noise comes back. The only way I knew it wasn't the loose control board bracket was from the length of the video.
If anything, that board probably came loose from the vibration
Perfect 👌
Sure glad that Miss Molly was there to give you advice if you would have needed it. After all, she is now a certified technician in HVAC. lol 😆
I don’t mark where wires go. Read schematic or trace wires out. Do enough can do it blind. Love the videos. Awesome mechanic here. Clean them burners why there and flame sensor

Outstanding work !
That was a good job, kept ya busy.
My Nordyne motor also had a built in bracket. Exact same motor. I replaced it with an Evergreen ECM and used a new belly band.
Steven lavimonier I like your utube videos
Steve's working again yaaalll
Like your video. I to work on furnaces and what I do to save time if I have to disconnect wires I take a picture with my phone so I can see where all the wires go back speeds up the repair time.
Nice to see how you took care of them your a good man.
“I changed the filter not to long ago” I here that all the time
We used to say its humming because does not now the words. ha ha
I see Molly got her certification; time for a raise!!
Well I see Miss Molly got her HVAC certification. lol She's a keeper mama.
She's the best plumber's apprentice.
She pays attention to detail more than these millennial helpers who are too busy staring at their phones instead of watching what's going on and maybe anticipate what's needed next as far as materials etc.
Very well done 👍
Great job and video like always
Great Job!!
Great. Job. Steve.
I was guessing NJ. I was wrong. Dartmouth, Massachusetts
I have a Goodman furnace and I don’t see an air filter on the return side of the unit but I do have 2 filters in 2 rooms of the house. Is that normal or is there supposed to be a filter in the unit as well?
No it's fine. Filters in the ceiling are better because they stop dust from junking up the vents as well as the unit
Great work
I had the same motor in my goodman. Mine would run for about 1hr and then it would shut down and the AC would freeze up. Did you change the compacitater?
Finally Ms.Molly is a certified HVAC Tech just like the baby dog and Suzy before her.
Now that Miss Molly is certified she wants union benefits lol
That's just the salvage boat pulling up to haul that old Goodman away...
Paw Print Certified! Too Cute.
How old is that furnace
Yesterday I got a call for a noisy furnace and ended up finding a squirrel head first down in the draft inducer fan exhaust. The fan was rubbing one of its front legs off.Crazy!
Customer left ya free dinna
Talk about a squirrel cage blower fan
Nice work
Nice job steve!
I'm so glad I don't have forced hot air anymore. Hot water is way easier for me to figure out.
Steve you remind me of a old millwright I work with always preferred hand tools over impact guns
Anybody check the size of the return drop duct. Looks small. Will cause issues like that. Just like when you get a resonating ring thru return air grilles. Too much flow thru it will make it vibrate and "ring"
Steve the Noise is cavitation created from the dirt on the blades of the fan clean the blades and your done.
if my noise comes back i will clean blades
I scrolled too fast and thought it was “Goddamn gas furnace making strange noises” 😄
You're correct for saying that. Those goddamn goodmans
December 31 was my 18th birthday🤟🏻🤟🏻
Never seen a fan motor have a 12 Farad cap!
Prob was a 12.5 so 11.25 would still be good. I go by 10%
It's a 5% variance. I would have changed it personally if the motor wasn't an r and r.
Never seen one fail at 5% or 6% like it says on the faceplate of the cap.
I thought you couldn't stop a trane lol, good video as always Steve
You can't stop a Goodman!
My furnace had the same exact problem and I got it fixed
Main blower motor bearings are cheap in Goodman units.
Your a good man Steve!
Seven relays? Did they buy the christmas lights option?
That motor was obviously humming because it didn't know all the words!
Were did you get that nice flash light you were using?
i had same noise at shore house just hit duct with my hand noise went away i have goodman too
First time I've ever seen you make a parts run.... that's because you have a well stocked truck.
Watch out Steve. Now that Molly has turned out, she might drag up and go to the hall. Nice work as always.
Hello from the great state of Michigan
Hello there!
I am a plumber in Europe (Netherlands) we haven't had these boilers in 20 years
Why are you not using high efficiency boilers
I have pulled and cleaned blower wheels hundreds and hundreds times in my 30 year HVAC Tech career
You inspired me to become certified and do youtube videos!
Goodman=good enough mama
you should check static pressure
Lol 😂 the Rhonna called ya
it does appear to be a good day to work inside, order new motor, travel in bad weather, come back and take your time on this job. Don't want to have to install vent pipes outside !
My goodness if you have a scrapyard somewhere in the area you could really get some serious cash recycling all that metal.
Bit heavy handed with that impellar seeing its balanced.
Miss Molly is looking very spiffy in her HVAC uniform! And - yes - she does love to drive!
Converting a Goodman to a Harmony gas furnace
I am thinking the motor was probably good, but everything was 'loose as a goose' and created the vibration.
Time to grease the Twirly Bird attic vent.
