@Mustie! I know all about these, I service them in my area (southern Illinois) Very dependable pellet stoves. I own a furnace model in my basement that's tied to my central heat ducts. I installed one of these in a ladies fireplace about 6-7 yrs ago. The door HAS to be shut AND sealed to see a vacuum inside the burn area. The 'computer' has to see the vacuum or the igniter will not try to start the pellets burning, and the auger will not run to push pellets into the 'burn box'. (safety thing) They can be manually ignited with a jellied alcohol solution. Also, you need a plate covering the hole on the front of the burn pot so the inlet air draws up through the burning pellets is a must. Cut a metal plate and install it and it will work correctly, right now it's not burning right. Of course, by the time I've watched this, you already now all this LOL Yea, your guess on that being a 'cage' that goes in the fireplace first, then the rest slides into it (for servicing access) Did you get the 'diverter' plate on the right side with the stove? It needs to be there. Also, make sure the 'air holes' are open in the bottom of the burn pot, they like to 'clinker' off, I couldn't tell if you have them good and clean so enough air can get to the burning pellets so it burns efficiently. Not telling you what to do, just giving you some pointers about the Harmon stoves.
At the start I wondered if there was a missing basket for the combustion area. On mine there is a cast iron basket you remove each day for cleaning. The ash in that forms a solid lump that you have to break up to vacuum out.
He had a cover kind of thing on the top of the burn pot that he removed when cleaning the pot out. I don't know if he put it back on? Is that what you are talking about with the air to be drawn and burn more efficiently?
@@d.l.horton2093 No, where he removed the long and short thumbscrew on the front 'angled' area of the burn pot there's an access hole to change out the igniter on models that have them (this one doesn't appear to) If that is open it doesn't allow the air being drawn in to be forced up through the air holes in the bottom of the inside of the burn pot through the pellets for combustion air. After looking when the pellets were burning, it appeared he did put the plate on, but hard to tell real well in the video. The flame seemed to me to be burning too high and orange, it will generally have more of a blue color to it when having 'complete' combustion. These Harman pellet stoves work REAL efficiently when working right. I wouldn't give mine up for any other brand. Hope that helps.
He also might want to make sure there is enough ventilation (air gates) to provide combustion air in the room where this stove is going to be installed
What I love about Mustie's channel is that he's not constantly begging for likes and subs. No nagging for Patreon "supporters", no asking for "donations", no "reviews" of free sponsored junk. No Raycon ear buds, no World of Tanks, none of that shit. Just interesting content without the "please give me money" component. What a breath of fresh air on youtube. So tired of e-begging.
Mustie: Mechanical master and repairman extraordinaire. Also Mustie: Installs handle on the door with it closed, forcing him to turn the set screw 1/8 turn at a time and unable to see the screw he's putting the allen wrench into. :-) Loved the video.
This is fabulous!!! I have a busted pellet stove and was hoping someone would do a "Mustie1" on pellet stoves. And so the master himself comes through. Thank-you!
I have a Lopi pellet stove insert that has been working great for 35+ years I am 70 year young widow and I clean the stove out myself the guy who checks the motors etc for me says still looks like brand new He has replaced door gasket once love my pellet stove love your videos tells me they are all about the same take care they all last just about forever lol
Good Morning, Mustonians! Thank you, Darren, for our last "wrench time" with you in 2024. I always enjoy the videos, and learn something new every week. Now, lemme grab my coffee, and let's get it!!!
Tearing up boy from Mishawaka ( you gotta find the state!) here. I was Just telling the wife about the group of viewers who say good morning or hi from Australia! I learn a lot but don't you just get tired of telling him what to do next! And you my fellow friend, I'm 23 minutes in, 2nd cup of coffee, and vaping marijuana ALL while being entertained by a guy named after a fish. What a life!
Hey Darren, we've never met in person, or ever likely to, but you've felt like a real close pal over the many years of watching your channel. Just wanted to say a sincere thank you. Dave, North of England.
Thank you Darren for another amazing year of coffee filled Sundays hiding away from the family watching Mustie time...Got the wife trained very well now that early Sunday morning you can hear the birds chirping ..squirrels rushing around and the snore of my 2 bulldogs & the sound of " Leave him ALONE kids ..he's watching Mustie !!!"
Coffee and mustie!! As someone that used to install pellet stoves and inserts along with all fireplaces products , I could go on on this video for hours but Mr mustie a good magnehelic combustion analyzer do wonders on efficiency on these unit. Anyways thanks for a great Sunday episode of the adventure of mustie1
Thank you for this subject. Wasn’t very familiar with pellet stoves, now I have better understanding on how they work. And I like your renovation of the unit.
I wasn't sure, when I saw the thumbnail, if I thought I'd like it. It turns out, I just like watching Darren troubleshoot and then problem solve. I will watch you do practically any sort of task involving those aspects. I'd go satin finish all the way. The gloss may craze with a lot of heat cycles. But, maybe that would be appealing
Thank you Mustie for the video of the fireplace insert. At first I thought it should go back to the scrapyard, but after you were done with it I said " Now that looks nice!" Now too change the subject, For Christmas, 2 of my gifts that was given to me was a Mustie 1 Sweatshirt and Travel Coffee Mug that was made up! My girlfriend hears me say I can't be distracted for at least an hour til Mustie is over!!!! Thank you for the videos. From Maine.
Awesome video! My new obsession, as my wife calls it, is pellet stoves! Bought a cheap, older unit and installed it in my basement. Learning and refurbishing it as I go. It’s fun and my daughter likes learning on it with me. Great video, thank you!
For those in the know, the reference to Frank’s string of obscenities as he “fixes” the furnace in “A Christmas Story” got me! Thanks for the laugh Mustie;)
As I watch you work on your pellet stove, I sit here warming and watching my 1995 Quadrafire do it's job. Many tons have gone through this unit and it works great.
Thanks Mustie this was a little different & very interesting, Finished product is very presentable and as you showed quite serviceable. Daz from Australia
I love your videos. You are a super smart guy. I am amazed you did not realize that tightening the set screw would have been much easier with the door open; tons of clearance for the allen wrench that way. Nice recovery and restoration of this pellet heater.
Love this RUclips channel every time you never know what you're going to see it's not just about cars or old bikes great video and learning something new every time I watch it 😀 👍👍
Mustie, i as everyone enjoy all your videos. No videos are the same and the fact you are always ready to attack any situation at hand is incredible. I really enjoyed this one, no gas, no carb involved and yet the project kept my full attention from start to finish!! We Greatly Appreciate your Talent and time!! I have learned a lot myself, watching and listening!! Thank You Kindly!!! We never know whats going to be next on the lift rack or the work bench! Happy New Year!!! To you and yours!! 👍🎉✌️
Excellent video! I have had a harmen insert invincible for the last 20 years and ive never had a problem with it except for servicing the replaceable parts, they are well made stoves,Thanks for the video!!!
Hi Darren, thank you for all your fantastic videos of 2024, I look forward to them every Sunday. It is always a pleasure to be in your company, watching you work, figuring out how to repair,or diagnose faults. One way to protect glass from overspray,is to apply some petroleum jelly to the surface, then just wipe it off ,with the excess paint.Saves a lot of scraping! All the best to you and your family for 2025,wishing you good health and prosperity.
You are inspiring, Mr. Mustie! Your method gives me confidence to tackle even the craziest projects! Now, I just need your patience and level of problem solving skills... then I'd finish more of them.
So that means much info and schematics out there on them. But we all know Darren by now "what instructions?" lol, I do not need them, I'll figger it out heh heh heh.
watching Mustie hear from New England I rebuilt (Circuit board, ignitor, and disassembly for a deep clean) my Harman stove last year. I was all in for around $350. It was so much cheaper than replacing it and hiring a stove company to fix it. Make sure you get an igniter that is an exact replacement from the stove store and made by Harman. The Amazon ones are garbage and will not last. I think that’s why my circuit board actually went up: because I used an aftermarket igniter.
Good morning Mustie1 and fellow Mustie1 subscribers on this balmy and much warmer 37 degrees this morning. Beats the -2 degrees we had about week ago! Perfect time for many in the cold winter states like those of us in the Northeast this time of year for a heater repair video! Back to watching the video with a nice hot cup of coffee! H A P P Y N E W Y E A R t o A l l !!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Mustie1 for giving me some inspiration to finish up my old quadrafire pellet stove I have in the garage that needs a paint job and to be reinstalled into my house.
At the beginning of this video, I seriously thought Mustie met his match. Just some overdue maintenance and a good cleaning is all it needed. Great job Mustie!
Hi, Mustie. That's why i like your channel so much: came here, eager to see, if the other Boxer-Engine was any good. Get more than an hour wrenchtime on an automatic pellet-stove. And was not the least dissapointed about it! To you, Mrs. Mustie and all people who are dear to you, a great year 2025. Cheers!
the stove examination and clean was really cool but I have to say your stash is full of wonders and treasures I would enjoy a complete tour search. I too have a hard time letting all that interesting and beautiful stuff go even if I never use any of it it is cool in and of itself.
You sure hit the nail on the head about appliances, we've had our fridge for over 30 years and our microwave for 35 it still works but not very good finally got a new one. Keep up the great work
Hi D. Man what a difference!! Awesome restoration! That stove went from a rusted mess to a beautiful showpiece!! I love that you aren’t afraid to take on something that you have never worked on and save it!! Just wanted to say thank I appreciate all of your hard work this year bringing us all of these awesome videos!! Happy New Year to you and your family!! 😊😊😊😊 Darren
All this, and a journey through Mustie1's antique handle store! 😂 I was just given a pellet stove with 26 hours on it, on a "it's yours if you can get it out" scenario. I've no idea if it works yet (still in the van), so this video is great timing! 🎉
I had one of those stoves in "99". Yes, it needed maintenance as you showed, very badly!😮 Great job! You should have many years of enjoyment ahead of you!🙂👌
Awesome Sunday afternoon episode of Mustie1 Darren restoring an about to be scrapped pellet burning wood fireplace is definitely my ideal of a perfect lazy couch potato day. Wife is off shopping, got a mug of coffee and some left over Danish Christmas cookies to munch on.
My neighbor still uses a Harmon continuous feed coal stove for his entire house for 25 years plus. I help him at times loading the hopper and taking out the ashes.
Oh my friend, and I thought I was bad at keeping stuff. My wife has told me that I never get rid of anything, well i can say you are maybe worst then I'm But hay one never knows what can be used at any time. I love it .
I was watching a video the other day where a guy was trying to remove some exhaust manifold nuts and bolts that were really rusted. He did an experiment using heat, penetrating oil (I believe he was using Kroil), and a combination of the two. The combination was far and away the most successful method... none of the fasteners that he used both heat and penetrant on broke, and he removed the broken studs/bolts using the same method. I know that a lot of watchers already know this, but I'm an old dog who has been there and done that and I didn't know just how much better using both heat and a good penetrating oil worked!
Mustie1, you are the MAN. Always awesome content and by the way love that lamp😂. One of my favorite Christmas movies. Merry Christmas and Happy new year🔥🍻
Just an idea… I fully understand that you are a busy guy but….. remember years ago at the home shop how you used to make gas powered bikes and dive into your stash for ideas? Can you make one of those again please? Would bring us original subscribers back in memory lane for sure
He said that the bike builds don't get enough views to support the channel, and that he doesn't want to resort to 3rd party ads, and/or merch. If he had his choice, bike builds would be all that he'd do.
You reminded me of the time when my dad decided to give the coke boiler a thorough clean. It was a great boiler when it was serviced properly but it was a complete swine to clean and if it wasn't done then it would start to act up. One time, he decided that the vacuum cleaner was the way to go. Just one hot cinder was enough, 3 ft flames came out of the vacuum cleaner exhaust until he managed to turn it off.
Great save! As for appliances, I've installed individual outlet surge suppressors or if possible whole house suppression. No circuit board burnouts. Narragansett Bay
I work on pellet stoves, and yours is missing the 3 fire bricks that sit vertical on the ledge on the back wall in the fire box. They are not essential to have but help protect the metal from direct contact with the flames. You did a very good job fixing it up, but you will probably have to replace the combustion blower in the near future. The bearings are bad, so the oil will only be a temporary fix, and your control panel is supposed to have a knob for the thermostat, but yours is broken off so you won't be able to change the temp but you might be able to turn it with a screwdriver. Hope this helps.
Well this is different! Well done my friend, once again you show that if you dont try you will never know. You are to be commended for the scope of your shopping bins!!!
I love my 2011 Quadra Fire that I got for free from a friend who knew a guy that was getting rid of one. It hadn't been cleaned in years and tearing this one down brings back a lot of dirty memories. I got it during covid and had to drive to Delaware from NY to get the pipe from a guy on Facebook marketplace who had an unopened box for sale, there was nothing in any store by me. I didn't have to make it look pretty as I got it for my cold basement that was 45 degrees in the middle of the winter, now it's 70 and dry. My stove gets to around 450 in the pot and blows around 285 out of the vents. The only thing I have had to replace on the stove is the thermocouple, igniter, and the seal on the door. I hooked it up to a Nest thermostat with its own transformer and relay so i can control it remotely but my basement cools down so fast that the stove has a hard time cycling; it's old. It's a good thing these stoves were made to last. Awesome job. Love the lamp!!!

Close the hopper door to activate the vacuum switch. It should also be on stove temp, not room temp, as I see no external thermistor for this unit.

A very handsome restoration. That was in amazingly good condition considering its age, perhaps it got the love it deserved for many years.
Good morning! Got my coffee and my phone and now a Sunday morning mustie video! Life's good!
What do you need a phone for? I just toss mine aside or leave it turned off
Mustie1's little hammer always makes me smile...don't know why. Great Stuff!
Wow, that's a nice score now that you cleaned it up. Beautiful flame when burning. Another interesting project.

Man, i thought I was the junk hoarding king! I think Mustie's hoard might affect the rotation of the earth. 😂
Harman, best pellet stove you can get! Simple design feed system still in use today. Missing knob is your room/stove temp settings.
My dude! I'm watching him while sitting in front of my Quadrafire as well. Dern good stove.
I had a wood pellet stove for years. Loved it. Very efficient and kept the house toasty during winter.
Awesome, and great to see you make something rusty all shiny and pretty
Thanks Mustie this was a little different & very interesting, Finished product is very presentable and as you showed quite serviceable. Daz from Australia
It’s a clinker! 😂 I got the reference and laughed way too hard. You’re awesome 😂
Musty is the most chill person to watch
I really like this one! It was deforent, but well done and educational. Good job !!!

You would be a great candidate for those induction heating tools! I've been trying to come up with reasons to buy one.
That was a very interesting video. I love this stove - I've never seen one of that type before.
Just picked up a new Harman pellet stove last week and it suprises me how they haven't made many changes to them in all these years
So that means much info and schematics out there on them. But we all know Darren by now "what instructions?" lol, I do not need them, I'll figger it out heh heh heh.
You don't have to change something that works well, New doesn't mean better in the long-run.Gord
If it ain't broke .......... etc. 🙂 Thank god it's not 'Made in China' like so much garbage is these days.
If it works well, why change it.
I always wanted to know how one of these works thank you! Great video as always!

Happy New Year, Darren. There's nothing you can't fix.
Finally something to watch.
Thanks for the shop time Mustie1! Love the Christmas Story content. Happy New Year to you and your wife!
+1000 points for the A CHRISTMAS STORY movie reference! 😂😊
At the beginning of this video, I seriously thought Mustie met his match. Just some overdue maintenance and a good cleaning is all it needed. Great job Mustie!
Darren, you cease to amaze ! This was very interesting to me as l had no idea about pellet stoves.
Gotta love looking through the stash pile. Nice job.

Who else thought it would be easier to tighten the set screw with the handle in the open position and the door ajar?
All this, and a journey through Mustie1's antique handle store! 😂

Merry Christmas to You mustie
I used to have a pellet stove. When they are working right, they are great. Corn stoves are even better.
Can some pellet stoves handle corn?
@MostlyInteresting some can but not all. The nice thing about the corn stoves is corn can be found anywhere at cheap prices.

Great work,Darren it turned out really well…
Thanks!
Mustie 1, Happy New Year. "Let's Wrench". God Bless
That's what I like most about this channel, variety
Happy new year to all you Mustie 1 fans and to Mustie and your family
Ya, with Musti1, you never know what your going to get.
Good morning sir you got this or we wouldn’t have a video to watch this morning I give it a very good chance of working in your hands
Another rockin video from Mustie!! I don’t care what he’s wrenching on, I’ll watch it!!
I have used my pellet stove as my main heating source for years. Saved a ton of money in heating costs.
I made lots of repairs to the pellet stove back home. Saved on the service call for $110 plus parts & labor.
Well this project was different and cool great work fixing this one up Darren 👍
Nice work, professor .. who needs trade school could just watch Professor Darren. Nice work.
That Dial with the numbers around it is the thermostat
Solution: "Lets go beat on it" I love this channel !!
Wow, final product is amazing, not what I expected at all!
Mustie I love your channel. You are an inspiration brother.
Great video tad from Australia when you turned it on I was waiting for it to explode
Nice to see something other than cars and engines. The mix is why I come back. There were too many car videos. The Skid Steer was great however!
Nice job on the pellet stove. You should get an "major award" for that.
Like a leg lamp?
@@outdooraf Yes! Funny how in the movie the dad couldn't get the furnace working right, but Mustie1 did.
@ It’s a clinker!
