  • During a stopover in Quito, we took the opportunity on one of our free days to visit Zuro Loma Preserve, a small private reserve about an hour outside of Quito. This was our introduction to the Andean Cloud Forest where we primarily focused on birding, and specifically on the magnificent hummingbirds of the area. We arranged the outing as a private excursion with Neotropical Nature and Birding.
Hummingbird species observed included; Swordbill Hummingbird, Mountain Velvetbreast, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Collard Inca, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Tyrian Metaltail, Buff-tailed Coronet and Black-tailed Trainbearer. Antpittas, brushfinches and tanagers were also seen.
Photography notes: As you'll see, the hummingbirds are accustom to humans, so a super telephoto lens isn't necessary but will come in handy for other species. Most of the hummingbird video was shot at 120fps and slowed to between 20% and 40% for slow motion presentation here.

Do you need a prior booking to visit the reserve please?

I do not think a booking is necessary. We booked a day excursion through Neotropical Nature and Birding who took care of all the details and provided transportation, but there were other people who arrived on their own and were welcomed. The preserve has a Facebook page under "Zuro Loma Birding" and an Instagram account under "zero_loma_reserve" which might help as well. The Facebook account has contact info for the reserve. Enjoy your visit.
