The most interesting part of the episode to me was what happened in Buffy's house. Buffy in the kitchen when she turns on the radio with the loud music to drown out her mother's raving in the same way Dawn puts the pillow over her ears. She realized that in that moment she couldn't take what was happening and breaks down.
Spike is obsessing over Buffy, but I think he has real feelings as well.
After killing the Queller demon Spike helps Buffy up. And Buffy lets him, instead of ignoring his hand and getting up. We see that Riley saw it as well.
And finally Buffy reassuring Joyce and Dawn, holding them as if she was the parent and they were the children.

Dawn the character is 14-years-old. The behind-the-scenes point about her age is that the character was originally envisioned to be a younger girl, like 10 to 12-years-old. But Michelle Trachtenberg, who was older, was such a good fit that they made the character 14 instead.
And I am DARN GLAD they did. Not only because Michelle does such a good job as Dawn, but also because there are many more opportunities to have her character go through more complex and introspective stories as a teenager rather than as a little girl.

I only weish they would have amended some very silly lines of her that even when she is 15-16 are just ridicolous for a girl her age to say.

You pre-empted the comment I was going to make with one of your observations. One of the strengths of season 5 is the way all the episodes drive the overall plot forward. In earlier seasons this might have been a separate monster of the week episode, a break from the main storyline, but now they are being integrated into that story.
You reacted to the line from Joyce "My sweet, brave Buffy" exactly as I do. It sums up Buffy's character precisely and concisely. It always makes me smile.

It's a small moment, but I love Dawn's quote saying, "There's a girl at school told me that gelatin is made from ground-up cow's feet, and that if you eat Jell-O, there's some cow out there limping" and the look Buffy and Joyce give each other as Dawn says it, through Buffy chastising her mom playfully/sarcastically for teaching Dawn how to talk. It all demonstrates a biological family dynamic in a way this show doesn't do often.

One of my favourite Joyce moments!

    Welcome back, Elie boy!
I don't have much to say about the alien cockroach, but the scenes of Buffy crying while washing dishes and where Buffy promises her mother she'd look after Dawn are simply masterful! There is something very sublime about the ending scene between Joyce and Buffy. We keep waiting for it to veer into something melodramatic or self-indulgent but the script and acting are just so natural.
Joyce's lines feel like they are truly coming from someone in Joyce's shoes, who doesn't know what the viewers have been shown, and who cares about the things and people important to Joyce. Very often, a TV show will try to capitalise on a meaningful scene to hype up the season's main plot or big bad, but they never fell into that trap. It was just such a heartfelt and sincere moment.

"Monster of the week, with purpose" I agree 👍

Personally, i love how frequently you release... the people who do onlyb1 episode a week will take years to finish. With your release it more of a binge watch which is great.

Yeah, season 5 rocks. Not all Buffy fans consider S5 to be the best of the show, but I personally do, followed by seasons 2 and 3. Like you, I love that even most of the "monster of the week" type episodes this season have meaning and purpose. Almost every episode is important to the storyline.
Great acting by the 3 Summers girls this episode, and even greater acting coming up in future episodes this season.
@Elie, some of your predictions in this episode were spot on, some were way off. Of course I won't tell which is which... :)

If you pay attention or have been, you’ll see there have been only a handful writers/creators for this show over the years. After a while, depending who it was (including joss himself) you will know what kind of episode you are in for. Emotional depth, funny, serious, different, weird, impact, story line, monster of the week, or over all story arc episode, etc. ,etc. even the dialogue and episode “feels” are unique to that writer. It’s very interesting.

Very true. Out of curiousity, how would you characterise the general types of stories by each of the main Buffy writers?

One of the fun things on watching Buffy while it aired was the oppotrunity to grow with the characters. Season five is a tonak shift to adult life. This show matures a lot

Once you've finished season 7, find Passion of the Nerd's video about the remaster. You'll see why everybody screams to avoid it.
The scenes of the alien cockroach dying were cut from the 6.45pm showing on British TV, though they were in the post watershed repeat.

No need to show down. You can do other Whedonverse shows like Firefly, Dollhouse, or even Agents of Shield after.

Please don't slow down, it's just my opinion but I think it helps you, as a reactor seeing this all for the first time, to really get the most out of not just each episode but also each season, and the series as a whole. Your reactions and commentary about this show are miles above all the other reactors (no offense to the others, everyone is doing a great job, you just have something about your insight into the show that is chefs-kiss).
Maybe the speed has something to do with it. Or maybe I'm just really greedy and need to see all your reactions now! 😊
