There's nothing wrong with playing it safe!
2 Tips for you. First use the correct damage type on the ships. Gamma is Explosive. Nova Missiles. Second you are in a Caldari Worm, with bonus for Kinetic mainly, use Hornet II drones, they are faster and better tracking.
One more Tip, Train your Targeting Range so you can maintain lock at the range of your launchers.
Actually, the ship he's using, Worm, receives better DPS in gamma using thermal or kinetic than it does explosive. This is because the role bonus is greater than the gamma filament bonus
