    Just to clear some stuff up since this episode gets a lot of comments about it:
    -The tattoos on Rachel aren't real, we were just maybe being a bit too deadpan with the joke ;)
    -The writer of the episode and the director of the channel both have several tattoos, so the advice is written and directed from the perspective of someone who has gone through the process.
    Thank you as always for all the advice and discussion in the comments!
    DFTBA,
    Sarah

      Greetings! I'm the woman getting tattooed by Mickey Schlick in the video. I did not follow tip 5 as this lovely Spanish Moon Moth is my first tattoo; my reasoning was "Go big or go home." While I know that this choice isn't for everyone who is considering their first tattoo, I'm very glad that I went big! I was also very, very, very, very glad to have Mickey Schlick do my work. He has also done another piece for me on the reverse side of my forearm. It's a Columbia Moth and is every bit as lovely as the one on my back. In terms of tip 10, I wish I could have seen what Mickey was doing on my back. The footage that Caitlyn Hofmeister took is a joy for me to watch. To share another couple of tips with viewers, be sure wear sunblock over your tattoos if they'll be exposed to the sun. It will help preserve the artwork that is now permanently affixed to your body. Also, bear in mind that large tattoos may take more than one session- the one featured in this video took three sessions.

    Tip 12: at the end of the session, you'll most likely be given a sheet about tattoo care. FOLLOW IT! ITS TO HELP KEEP INFECTION AWAY!

      Tip 13: If you are going to get a tattoo in a foreign language that you don't speak (Chinese or Arabic calligraphy for example), make sure that you know the exact translation of the tattoo and don't depend too much on "google translator".

    A couple of further tipps from a tattoo artist and someone who has a LOT of tattoos:
    1.) do not drink alcohol or take pain killers the day before or on the day you are getting tattooed. These substances will thin your blood and you will bleed more, making it more painful and a more difficult process for the artist
    2.) eat and sleep well before your appointment. some people tend to faint, and this happens more often with people who didn't eat or sleep porperly due to nervousness. bring some sugary treats or a can of coke to your appointment in case you feel faint to get your metabolism on track again
    3.) shower and shave the area you are getting tattooed at. this should seem obvious, yet somehow it isn't. the artist has to be very close to your body, so showering is kinda the polite thing to do. and the area you are getting tattooed at HAS to be shaved either way, but most artists only have those shitty one-time use razors around which will only unnessecarily irritate your skin further
    4.) buy the after-care products (tattoo cream/bepanthene, perfume-less soap, etc.) before you go getting your tattoo, especially if you live in countries were pharamcies are not open 24/7. also, maybe find an old pyjama or something to sleep in for the first couple of days because your new artwork WILL loose color and stain your bedsheets etc.

    • @KathyClysm
      @KathyClysm 7 лет назад +34

      also, and this is just from personal experience with customers, but most people who are later on unhappy with their tattoo and want a cover-up are those that just got "something pretty" without any particular meaning or story. your taste changes over the years, especially when it comes to colors and art styles, but if you got the tattoo for a reason, when if means something to you, you will most likely be happy with it even if you don't particularily like the art style anymore when you are 50. what matters is the memories it holds then, not the image itself

      Some artists won't even do your tattoo if you are drunk. I did take a Xanax with my first one but with the ones after that, not so much. But also if the artist does strike up a conversation with you, go for it. I know the guy who did my second one talked to me about some of the strangest things people have had tattooed on themselves.

      yeah having a conversation with your artists is a little like having a conversation with your hair dresser. we try to talk to the customers as best we can to sort of get your mind off of what is happening. if you feel comfortable talking with your artist, go for it. the large majority of them have really interesting life stories ;)

    Honestly, I was warned away from a small tattoo for my first. People who get a small tattoo first for "safety reasons" usually wish they'd gone bigger later. Get what you want. If that's a big tattoo, awesome. It's it's smaller, awesome. But don't scale down on what you really want to just "play it safe." You'll just be disappointed later.

    • @notlikewater
      @notlikewater 7 лет назад +4

      I have two smaller tattoos as my first tats as well, and I wish the first was maybe a tad bigger, but not much. It was good for me as a way to learn about the healing process and what I could handle since they also didn't take very long, but that's a good point as well. As long as you have saved up the money for a bigger tattoo, then go for it!

    A tip from a woman I used to volunteer with. She said she didn't get a tattoo unless she's wanted it for at least a year. I think that's a good rule, just to make sure you don't have any regrets. I think that if you are not 100% excited going into the tattoo you shouldn't get it.

      tattoo artists literally decide how much they want to charge you, tipping is unnecessary

  • @LifeofMarie267
    @LifeofMarie267 7 лет назад +8

    Another tip: If you are going to get lettering, don't think you need to do the "script" fonts that most artists like. I did that with my butterfly tattoo on my right leg and people always ask me what the wording is. I got it because the artist at the time said "It would look cool." It's cool but I'm sick and tired of telling people what the wording says. When I got my DFTBA tattoo on my right wrist, I wanted more of a typewriter style font (I'm a writer) and the artist thought it was a cool idea so we went with it.

  • @xmorgan1123x
    @xmorgan1123x 7 лет назад +18

    Another thing to think about: if your profession or your community is not accepting of tattoos, there are plenty of places on your body that you can hide even a decent-sized tattoo. I'm in school to become a teacher, but I know that many schools think less of teachers with tattoos (especially young teachers), so my tattoo is going to be on my upper thigh. You could also do your waist, back, shoulder, or chest. Ribcage is another option but it does hurt more than most places.

    • @TheHPExperiment
      @TheHPExperiment 7 лет назад

      xmorgan1123x Do NOT get your chest tattooed if you want an unobtrusive tattoo!!!

    • @LifeofMarie267

      It does really depend on the facility/company. In education, it can be an issue (I knew one girl who would get her tattoos in some of the places you mentioned b/c she was going into education). In some places, not so much. I know one woman who worked for a university based hospital and she told me that she would see tons of nurses and other employees covering up their ink. I volunteer at a regional hospital that was started by Catholic nuns (we are still run by a faith-based organization too) and no one really cares that I have a tattoo on my wrist. I have also seen some nurses with tattoos that have peeked out of their scrubs (there was this one nurse my dad had who had a really awesome tattoo on his arm that peeked out of the shirt). But if you can find ways to hide them (like I know a woman at my hospital who uses watch bands to cover her tattoo), that's great because you never know when you'll come across someone with an objection to them and it's not just in a place of employment...I knew a lady at a church I went to who got me ostracized because of a tattoo I have on my leg.

    • @scribblescribble
      @scribblescribble 7 лет назад +8

      One more tip regarding hiding tattoos: Often arm, chest, or back tattoos will be visible through the ubiquitous white collared shirt worn in most professional settings. Even if the fabric is not thin, the tattoo might be seen underneath as a dark spot. Consider an undershirt or a darker color if it's essential that the tattoo is completely hidden.

  • @sicparvis87

    I'm getting my first tattoo in October and one of my other friends suggested to go small but the problem I have with that is, if it does hurt and I decide I don't want another one, then I've ended up with a small tattoo I didn't really want instead of the bigger tattoo I did and will now never get. So I'm just going for the forearm tattoo I want and if it hurts and I don't ever want to go through it again, at least I have the one tattoo I wanted! And living in the UK, I wear sleeves a lot so I can cover it more often than not if I need to, haha.

    • @TheHPExperiment
      @TheHPExperiment 7 лет назад +8

      Catherine B Honestly, don't worry about the pain so much. If it's something you want badly enough to have on your body for the rest of your life, then the pain shouldn't matter at all. In ten years, you're not gonna look at your ink and think "God that hurt so much for an insignificant length of time, why did I put myself through that?!" You're gonna forget about the pain as soon as it's over.

    • @LoreBeast
      @LoreBeast 7 лет назад +4

      Also I think a lot of people find that the pain isn 't as bad as you think it will be, that's how it was for me. I found the itchiness of the healing process much more irritating than the actual pain.

    • @LifeofMarie267
      @LifeofMarie267 7 лет назад

      I got my first tattoo close to 10 years ago. I was 30 and I was afraid that it would hurt like hell. Truth is it didn't. My first one was a shamrock on my left shoulder and truth is after the guy finished the outline, everything else was okay. After a while, you don't really notice it. The only one that was slightly discomfortable was my wrist tattoo but that's because the guy had to hit a nerve in my wrist. And that's not that bad because the guy wasn't going that deep. I've had nerve blocks in my neck that hurt worse than a tattoo.

  • @sabruckus
    @sabruckus 7 лет назад +29

    Most of this stuff was good advise, however, as a person with a not insignificant portion of her body tattooed, ALL TATTOOS HURT! Not all tattoos hurt the same and for some people they barely hurt at all, but don't go in there expecting it not to hurt. You're running the risk of setting yourself up for a nasty surprise if you go into a tattoo expecting it to feel like a "buzzing ballpoint." I actually laughed out loud at that one. =P
    Also, a part about aftercare would have been a good idea. There's a lot of different advise about aftercare depending on your artist or even where you live, but be prepared to have an oozy wound for at least a week or so and then VERY delicate, itchy, sore skin for a little over a month. It involves way more than just popping in a shop for a few hours.
    ALSO ALSO, NEVER drink alcohol and avoid blood-thinning medications like NSAIDs before or during the tattooing process. Most artists won't even tattoo you if you've been drinking and thinning your blood just before intentionally wounding yourself is just a bad idea!
    So there's my two cents. I think it's pretty cool that you guys did a tattoo episode. Keep up the good work. =)

    Custom art is generally waaaay more than that. At least in a city. After tip I spent about $900 on my thigh piece that took about 4.5 hours. Custom LOTR piece by an amazing black and grey artist who did an incredible job. Tattooists generally charge per hour for a custom piece, too, so the Tip is also for their artwork, not just the time spent to actually get you inked up.

      Mine was about $500 including the tip and took up my entire forearm, but honestly it's worth the higher price tag for a custom piece. It lets the artist be creative and you get something very special and wonderful.

      Not at all! Much like with waitstaff at restaurants, tattoo artists don't get paid a ton. Most of what you're paying for goes toward the supplies for the tattoo (ink and needles) and overhead for their shop (most of the time, they have to rent their chair at ridiculous prices). Any tip that you give them helps them out tremendously.

      If you are in the united states, if you receive almost any service, from a barista at Starbucks to the guy who does your tattoos, you are almost always expected to tip. It sucks but it helps keep a lot of these people afloat financially especially in the lower income service jobs. Welcome to working for 2.50$ as a waitress at a restaurant and hope your tips can add up to at least minimum wage.

    • @thenoddistsdisciple

      No, sun damage can make your tattoo fade and ruin the design. It's best to get yourself tattooed in the fall so your skin can fully heal before the sun becomes intense again.

  • @deanmccaskill5495

    Now for the rules
    Rule 1- Now that you have your awesome sleeve you must realize that it's not fair to the rest of us if we cannot enjoy your " ink" . You therefore must at all times wear short sleeves. Cold weather or even winter is not an acceptable excuse not to wear the short sleeves. Remember the rest of us. There is an exception. If you must wear protective clothing such as coveralls for employment then this is acceptable only if the long sleeves are rolled back and up towards the shoulder during breaks, and walking to and from the job site. Again weather cannot be used as an excuse, the sleeves must be rolled up at all times.

      general rule of thumb is if you've wanted a tattoo for at least six months, you'll be fine. Tattoos are beautiful and fun and you should have fun with it.
      Speaking as someone who struggles with mental health, mine also made me super happy and feel better about my appearance. I say go for it!

  • @thangasaravanan
    @thangasaravanan 6 лет назад

    is it good or not, any side effects?

    • @thenoddistsdisciple
      @thenoddistsdisciple 6 лет назад

      It really depends on your artist and where you get a tattoo. Honestly, it's not that bad. I know people with HORRIBLE pain tolerances who love getting tattooed, and I barely felt mine despite mine being a large piece. If tattoos were unbearable, people wouldn't get them.
      During the healing process, however, is whether or not you'll get any side effects. Things like ink blowout, infection, and your skin feeling like a moderate sunburn for your first week are things to look out for and/or expect, and it isn't uncommon for tattoos to itch like a MOTHERFUCKER after day 5 or 6.
      Overall though, if you did your research and planned your tattoo well, the results are worth the pain and side effects. :)

    • @LadyMacbeth1564
      @LadyMacbeth1564 7 лет назад +2

      J.M. Mitchell My tattoo artist has disposable razors and would shave the part of your body that needs to be shaved just before inking. So if you want to shave it yourself you're probably doing them a favour. It depends on your hair, but generally the ink is brightly visible for a long time after the healing.
