I literally was just expressing this exact irony to my mother last night. I was playing Final Fantasy VII on my RG35XX+ and telling her that they just don't make games like they used to. Now things are the exact opposite. The games look more mature, but the subject matter is the most childish, emotionally basic and ideologically driven tripe ever conceived by man(babies)!
Let’s be honest, the games aren’t less complex or fun now. Kids aren’t going to choose ps1 or N64 if they have access to Switch or PS5. We are the ones who changed. Looking back on what was familiar to us brings joy and memories in a way modern games will never do. Just like every generation before us, “things were better in our day”. It’s sad but we’ve become the old coots complaining how they don’t make ‘em like they used to. 😂
@@DonIncognito-d5e We didn't change and that's the point. The industry did. Kids today won't play the games we did only under certain circumstances. Usually when they get past a certain age and start forming their own social groups would they think the games we played were beneath them because they look too quaint, don't hand hold them through and don't have homogeneous control schemes and camera systems. Their friends would make fun of them ect. But when the kids are young they have no problem getting into whatever old game I loved as a child, which proves it's social conditioning and not 'old games terrible'. Nostalgia also plays a small part of course we loved these games as youngsters but I'd argue there's much more to it than just that. I'd argue that many of these games we loved from 20-30 years ago are actually timeless classics.
@ great call. Modern games are selling by such ground breaking numbers. My kids and their friends even prefer retro games to new ones. Remakes are outselling newer AAA titles rather consistently.
I was 18 when Resident Evil came out, it was mind blowing. I remember me and a bunch of friends taking turns trying to get through it for days strait. Great times.
A skipped a day at school to collect my ps1 preorder in the uk. I had one game battle arena toshinden and my mind was blown. The original pack in demo disc with one playable level of destruction derby was just insane! Recently started re exploring the ps1 again despite some now terrible looking games the game play is incredible. Not forgetting some of the epic 32 bit pixel art games too! Great video guys as always, love the channel, merry Christmas 🥳🎄
My favorite console of all time. I remember buying MK3 a month before I even got the system. FF7, Metal Gear Solid, Squaresoft at their peak. So many great memories from an era when I actually had time to play all the games I wanted to.
They aged fine in my opinion! Who said graphics needed to look like real life anyway? I like my videogames to look videogamey! Its why my comfort zone is the Playstation 1, the Super Famicom, and the Mega Drive.
What a great conversation! Appreciate Megadan being involved again. I was born the same year as Robert, I think you said 1994 before. Just missing the ps1/5th Gen was unfortunate just like not being able to experience all the great movies music and sports of that time too. I got to play Spyro and a couple others very young but I wish I got to experience those heavy hitters! There is a lot of truth in that it is difficult to go back to that Gen .. but to focus on the great times you guys had was very wholesome. Cool time capsule. Happy holidays to everyone.
Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄🎅🏻 The PS1 is still great to go back too. If you can get over the blocky polygons (most of us from that era can), so many awesome games. All those Final Fantasy games, Driver 1 and 2, Gran Turismo, both Medal of Honor games, Road Rash 3D, Tekken 3, and of course Metal Gear Solid. Original 3 Resident Evil games are classics. The demo discs we got back in the day to try the games from either PlayStation Underground but especially Official PlayStation Magazine was so damn cool too. Great memories
@@tr1bes from my experience the loading times at least for the most part weren’t that bad. I’d rather have a loading screen than the game tell me i need an expansion pak to play a game.
N64 is rough going back to. I have no problems going back to ps1. Also hearing the term “it’s rough to go back to”. Like it was the 90s they were still figuring shit out
@ i disagree cause even with a hdmi mod some of the games are still jank. But ps1 most of the games have stood the test of time but I guess the same can be said about n64. Some games still look decent to great.
I'm the opposite. There are still so many N64 games that I love going back to, but a lot of PS1 games are hard for me to go back to with the exception of the 2D games and Crash Bandicoot.
Even though I was an N64 kid, we did get a PS1 later and the games it had perfectly complimented the gaps in the N64 library. It really got me hyped for the PS2 because I knew the flaws it has with graphics and loading times would be solved the next gen and we all know gen 6 was awesome. Fighting Force is the game I have to mention. It’s been a while but I remember playing that co-op and liking it better than any of the 2D arcade beat em ups.
PlayStation one took me for a long ride! Resident evil one freaked me and my cousin out during that era, and FF7 and I.Q. was in rotation for quite some time. MGS, Tomba 1&2, Mega Man Legends 1&2, Thrasher Skate&Destroy, and just so many RPG’s! 30 years of experience and greatness!
Preordered my PlayStation at Software Etc with Ridge Racer and was blown away when I got it and found out that I could take the game out after initial load and replace with my own CD to listen to my music during gameplay. Never forget that
Let’s be real the PlayStation 1 will always be a classic, Spyro, Driver, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider! So many amazing games came out an set them up for future success with their ps2. Sadly though not many games hold up for me on PS1 these days it’s just a tad bit too dated personally for me, but I’ll always have a special place for it in my memories. Merry Christmas guys!
Wow, 30 years of PS1! Crazy… spot on talk. I’m still finding things I didn’t know existed at the time like the Namco NeGcon controller. Paired with R4 Ridge Racer, excellence! Cheers!
As a late GenXer this was my college freshmen console. Played the heck out of someone else’s for years before I got my own. My first one that I owned was the dual shock variant. What about Battle Arena Toshinden?
I was 12 years old. The first time I played resident evil in the seventh grade and they had never ever been again that made you feel what that game made you feel!! It was so amazing and I have absolutely no problem whatsoever at all going back and playing this generation! Especially if it's resident evil or silent Hill or Dino crisis or Gran Turismo or Tekken3 or any of the nanny games that were absolute bangers on the system!
PS1 is my nostalgia. Brilliant video. Best video you have done this year. I loved playing ridge racer and tomb raider. Thanks for the early Xmas present. Have a great Christmas.🎅🏻
I didn't discover light gun gaming until I got into imports and my first mod chip. I used to go to this import game store as a kid and I saw they had Biohazard: Gun Survivor playing on the screen with the guncon 1. I was like "What!?? This isn't even out yet! I've gotta get this game and a modchip now!" Later I tried to get my friends to play with the 2 screen setup for TC 2 & 3 but it was like pulling teeth. All anyone wanted to play was Timesplitters, COD, Red Faction, etc. Oh well at least I tried. PS2 couch multiplayer era was still awesome 👍🏻
Yo, 1996 was my intro to the og PlayStation. Would go to a friends house and be sooo lucky to have to use the restroom and get a glimpse of the system. His dad gave it to him but his mom didn’t like us, his friends, in the house. Played tekken a couple times. I always enjoyed the arcade versions back then. Spoiled much. I think so. Then, at another friends. We’d shoot hoops in his driveway. Go inside for some water and play a basketball game on the PlayStation while eating peanuts. Good ol Chevy. He was a cool cat. MeeemoreeeZ. Peace!-)
Merry Christmas fellas. If you were born in 90 like myself. The 5th gen is massively nostalgic. I also agree it hasn’t held up well lol. 64 and PlayStation were the first 2 consoles actually bought for me. Christmas 97 and Christmas 99. It’s funny at the time PlayStation was considered way cooler but now the N64 has more of a revered collector following. It’s sort of same story with PS2 and GameCube. They both had their strengths and weaknesses. I think PS1 games had way better graphics than 64. I was heavy on the Crash, Spryro games and Tekken games. All day haha. Also a console playing CDs was cool as hell. Maybe it’s just me I also fell PS1 games had way more cutscenes and actual spoken voices then the 64. I guess limitations of the cartridge format?
The PS1 will always be my favorite console of all time. The library is insane. It's definitely a little rough looking at times, but I find it's rough edges charming these days. If you guys have never tried Rapid Reload (Gunners Heaven in Japan), I would recommend it. I think you guys would dig it. Great video! ❤
Having an older brother I had a NES SNES and Sega Genesis growing up but the PS1 was my first console. Diablo 1 was my first obsession in gaming. The Syphon Filter series was top tier to me. The Doom portal was sick as well... Besides Diablo I didn't mess with the RPGs and it is still one of my favorite consoles of all time.
Cool discussion, guys! I only have 31 PS1 games on my shelf and I play them on a PS2. Star Wars Jedi Power Battles is good dude! I have it on both PS1 and Dreamcast. Should make sure to give it a go this year! Hopefully, 2 player! Happy holidays, fellas!
