  • In this tutorial I teach how to play the 'Memphis Tennessee' guitar solo, as played by Chuck Berry on his 1958 recording. The video includes full and accurate guitar 'tabs', fast and slow demonstrations, and dissection of Chuck's guitar playing on this song.
You can view or download a tablature sheet I've prepared to accompany this video from my songbook blog here: wordpress.com/...

Thanks again Jez ... I was just learning this song; got the words down, and was looking at the solo - saw this, but had to move it all up a fret, cos I sing it in G. Have just started a rock and roll duo with a bass player .... doing our first gig at Home Lane pub, Wakefield Road Bradford next Sunday . It is supposed to be a jam session, (if any other musicians turn up). Your lessons are very good; encouraging newer players. Good job, well done.

Hi Bruce. I'm pleased my lessons help a little. Although I'm sure you could work this stuff out for yourself. It's lovely to get nice comments from an experienced musician and rock 'n' roll fan like yourself. I hope your gig in Bradford goes well on Sunday.
Last Sunday night I fulfilled a lifelong dream and had a recording session at Sun Studio in Memphis. Just me and my acoustic guitar. I videoed myself as I was recording (all old Sun Records song, plus one original). If you fancy a look, here's the first I've uploaded: ruclips.net/video/Tco_OMp8tO4/видео.html

I heard Chuck play this twice in one night in the early 80's Palace in Beaumont TX. and it was nothing like this and there he played it in E. I was about 10 ft. from him so I know what chords he was making, I was watching every one of them.

I saw Chuck live a few times between 1981 and 1998, and I’ve watched all of the available film/video footage. Yes, he played most of his songs quite differently live when compared to his original recordings. He improvised his solos, and probably never played a song exactly the same twice. I’ve not seen him play this one E, but I can well believe he did sometimes. As I say at the beginning of this video, I’m teaching how to play the solo as it was played on his record. I usually play this one in E myself.

Hey Jez, great playing as always💖
I hope you're all right, I wanted to ask you a favor. Could you do a tutorial of how to play "Rock Around the rock pile", please? This is a song that appears in the movie "The Girl Can't help it" starring Jayne Mansfield. I know this sounds strange, but I ask this because I truly truly love that song and I want to play it so bad!
Anyways, thank u for your attention and for a good video as always, greetings!💖

Thanks very much. I love that movie. I have a big list of songs I'd like to make tutorials for and don't have a lot of free time and energy to make them unfortunately. Consequently, as I'm sure you'll understand, I prioritise which ones I think most people are going to want to learn. Rock Around the Rock Pile is a fun song, but there are a many better known songs I have lined up to make videos for first. Sorry to disappoint - Jez

Hey man I was wondering if you could cover the school days solo? Would be a huge help as I've always stayed away from 50s stuff (looked very technical) but I'm trying it out now :)

I used to play Chuck’s solo from School Days, but found it a little‘weird’ and tough to replicate. He uses some quite odd timings and I suspect there are a lot of lucky mistakes in that solo that he wouldn’t have been able to repeat himself. Chuck usually improvised his lead guitar parts, so I decided I would do the same when playing that song. Not very helpful to you though I’m afraid.
