  • "The Mercury Grand Marquis is a full-size rear-wheel drive luxury sedan that was sold by Mercury from 1975 to 2011. From 1975 to 1982, it was the premium model of the Mercury Marquis model line and became a standalone model in 1983. For its entire production run, the Grand Marquis served as the flagship of the Mercury line; it was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria. From 1979 to 2011, it shared the Panther platform along with the Lincoln Town Car.
From 1979 to 1985, the Grand Marquis was manufactured at the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. From 1986 to 2011, production was located at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada. With the phasing out of the Mercury brand following the 2010 model year, a limited run of 2011 models were produced. The last Grand Marquis rolled off the assembly line on January 4, 2011; it was the final Mercury vehicle produced."

Federal regulations were eating up their ability to keep making them unfortunately. Even though they are cars that the majority didn't buy (compared to other smaller sedans); the fleet sales alone probably made them want to kill them off. Really a damn shame. I suppose Ford could have introduced a large revision to a newer generation by giving them a smaller V6 with better fuel economy, that could be done on the vehicle; but what would Ford use? Ecoboost? That engine technology is awful and is known to cause many problems with the people who own cars that use such technology... Older V6 engines amazingly can get decent mileage though.

hi Dan . i bought a 2007 Grand Marquis about 4 yrs ago. Jet Black. hard to believe but it only had 17.000 miles on it. whistle clean. Elderly lady owned it and never drove in the winter . mileage just reaching 30.000 as of 10/2022. paid 17.500$ for it. some one told me they were popular with golfers due to there HUGE trunk to hold golf bags etc. only problem i have had with it is A/C needs new compressor . holding off on that repair for now. mechanic said 1.200$ for new one. these cars hold as much as a pickup truck ( almost ).

mercury was a division of ford not its own car company. mercury got axed because ford got lazy. by the 80's mercury just became cloned fords. mercury cars no longer had their own unique appeal to them like they did in the decades prior. instead ford decided by the 80's that it would be cheaper just to clone a mercury from a ford car, slap a diff face and rear on it, give it some fake wood grain interior and call it a day. that trend continued on to the 90's and 2000's which lead to ford finally putting the axe to mercury by 2012. ford wasn't the only car company to do this both gm and chrysler also did the same to their car divisions as well.

SteelCity1981 I agree. The Grand Marquis was a jazzed up Ford Crown Victoria but also more like a poor man's Lincoln Town Car. Ford had to axe the Mercury lineup because the Mercury cars and SUVs were uplevel Fords

I own a 1996 Grand Marquis and i fuckin love it. While it was made as a luxury sedan, meant for smooth and comfortable rides. It hauls ass too. But, since it weighs 3,700 lbs stock, it comes equipped with a 4.6 L V8, and it kicks ass. These cars take bumps, jumps, objects, and whatever else you decide to run over like a fuckin boss. Its center of gravity is so low and widespread its perfect for drifting and sliding without losing control. Just a beautiful car in every aspect.

I’m 34 and missed the ride and quality so I just picked up a 1980 2 door grand marquis with the 351. It’s been sitting since 86 and I’m completely redoing it as I type this. The coupe is beautiful. I seen 2 81 coupe Lincoln’s last week redone here in Detroit can’t wait to be cruising it

I bought my first Mercury in 1980 - a 1975 Mercury Montego MX coupé, black with white interior. A really nice car which took me from coast to coast in the US.
Back then it was out of the question to ship it back to Denmark. That trend came later.
My next Mercury was in 1996 a 1976 Mercury Grand Marquis sedan, triple yellow. Somebody else had shipped it to Denmark but never taxed and registered it.
It was a GREAT car. I still like the style from 1975-78 the best. The style and ride from 1979-1987 I like the least. It improved though from 1988 and up.
I used the 1976 in my livery business and sold it a few years later to a Danish friend of mine in London, GB, who used it as a "black cab" in Loncon City.
The reason why I didn't keep it was that I got a customer, who required I could seat 5 in the back, why I changed to a Cadillac Fleetwood factory limousine.

I wish this would have narrated by someone, it would have been interesting if we would have gotten an actual history, instead of the picturesque history of the Grand Marquis.
I loved the mid to late '80's models. They probably had the best ride and comfort of all Grand Marquis's. My grandmother had a 1979 model that was loaded with leather interior. Had the 351 engine. I think that was the last year Ford used that engine in their cars. I hated when she had to trade it in. I loved driving that car, it was so comfortable.

GRAND is definitely the right name for these magnificent MARQUIS 👌. Had 78 GRAND MARQUIS Coupe. So huge and OTT luxury. Later had 83 LS Coupe, 89 LS sedan with optional formal roof, 🏆. Went to Cadillac for a while. Came back for 2007 LS, and currently driving near mint 2007 Town Car Signature Limited. All great cars. Do prefer pre 91 more formal look and CHROME bumpers. Ford screwed up big time in dropping Crown Vics, GRAND MARQUIS, and TOWN CARS. Who wants to pay $80,000 plus for a glorified 🚚? With luck you can get 4 or 5 of these beauties. 🏆.👑. 😎

yof I love the 90/91 mercury gmq, because 1990 that was the first year FORD company redesigned the whole dash board & cluster! has a beautiful slant look to it! problem with those clusters 1990 to 94 grand Marquis, the gears are made of shit plastic & break easy & the mileage will stop working as well as the trip... speedometer still works... there's a guy that sells brand new gears on the internet that are made a hell of alot better then the ones Ford made... original gears, get soft really bad & u can break em easy with your fingers! the durable ones from the guy, impossible to break! they are that strong!! I installed them in my 90 grand Marquis.. Ford made the best dash design as well as the cluster ! but horrible workmanship on the gears!
if u were to go look at a 90 to 94 mercury for sale.. chances are the gears are broken in that car & u don't know the TRUE mles on that car... :/ so your gonna be skeptical...

I had a '91 Marquis about 5 years ago. Missed it so much I went and bought an '88 a couple years back. It's still in the garage and not going anywhere anytime soon!

Austin Thomas they are great cars Mercury's 1979 to 91! my grandfather had a 78 mercury gmq 2 DR sedan...
that car was a boat! baby blue with a half dk blue vinyl roof... 79 was the first year they downsized the body weight, width.. etc... when your going over a big bump on the lighter Mercury's, u can feel the back shifts either right or left depends on the curve on the street... car is light that's why... have u guys noticed this on your cars??

I have noticed that it likes to sort of wiggle and sway in corners. A small price to pay for a smooth ride like it has though.

    • @cadiman12
      @cadiman12 7 лет назад

yof I thought it was just me that the car would shift left or right from the rear hitting a bump... ;)
so it has happened to all u guys then... forgot to mention, I have a 1990 gmq ... bought the car in 2010...still have it... your right, they do have a smooth ride to them!! my car is the GS model, meaning it has the velor int. these seats are soooo comfy & keep u cool.... they never rip! unlike leather in the LS model... before I bought the car, i inspected the whole car...it's all original even all the headlights on them! original factory plastic sealed beams, not the glass... which are Sylvania halogens... I know original equipment on Mercury's :D I even looked at the brake bulbs, they're the original factory!! I bought the car from a young 17/18 year old kid...I believe he bought this car off from an old man.. , he wanted to get a small car that's good on gas... I haven't used the mercury in awhile due to a hole in the gas tank... :/ I have a clean used one from a 90 Lincoln TC at a salvage yard... I wanna get this car back on the road as I wanna get some use out of it...has 96k miles on it...
had 88k when I got it...

I noticed u began at 1975, and I thought the car started earlier than that. So I checked Wikipedia and indeed Merc Grand Marquis was 1975-2011, but a Merc Marquis (without the Grand); ran 1967-1982.
So what was the difference between the two? I kind of wished you had also included the 1967-74's, but in the purest sense of the name, I understand why you didn't.

Exactly, I started from 1975, when the "GRAND" prefix was added

Anyone remember how unique these sounded when the engines would spool up to speed? That whirring, especially in first gear?

Parts are sooo cheap! I can fix everything myself. It is a tank. Rides like a dream. It's basically a muscle car with leather seats. It is reliable. It floats down the road. It is a crime they ceased manufacturing.

Panther Platform might have been the best cars ever made by Ford. They just didn't keep up with the times, and Ford didn't want to lose it's Senior Consumers. All it needed was all wheel drive, all little tech, and (gasp) a console shifter, or push-botton by this point. They would still be around. I thought the Marauder was going to be the saving grace, I guess not.

What was the average age of buyers? It's very much a Florida grandpa living in a gated community vehicle. This car wasn't driven, one simply floated down to the mall in it. From another era.

Such a great looking car from its inception until 1991. From 1992 onwards Still a great car just not as classy looking and bordering on ugly untill the end of production. I would still be happy to own and drive any generation grand marquis

I have a 2011 Crown Victoria LX, the last year Ford built the Crown Victoria and the Lincoln Town Car. One of the stupidest things Ford ever has done was to discontinue building these great cars.
