The temples were just like that. People used to ask the monks to sleep for one or two nights. Recently there are some people making troubles or thefts pretend to have no place to go then ask the monks to stay. After that they steal goods or make troubles for them the monks. That is why it is getting harder to ask the monks to stay a few night at the temple. However, if you go to ask the monks out the city, it is easier to get a permission to stay in the temple than in the city.
I used to sleep in the main hall experienced the same as you guys and and I like it very much.

Try the pagoda on top of Bokor Mountaon in Kampot. The view in the morning is especially breathtaking.

Sleeping in the Pagoda seem so easy for foreigners like you guys but for asian people if they have to do this challenge, they might wish for not seeing a free show at night. You know what I mean THE FREE SHOW

it’s been a cultural thing, since ancient times for those that have nowhere to go ( not limited to only travelers) to be allowed to seek shelter at a temple. however, i heard to due the rise of foreign travelers stealing from their stays…things might change.
Food and shelter at the temple is normal. The monks will welcome most people with big heart.

Cambodia is different than most Asian countries, it’s more relaxing, peaceful environments especially in Siem Reap. Love it, been there many times but never get tired of visiting it. Thanks for sharing and visiting Cambodia.

yes actually you haven't hotel or Guest house, you can request the monk for stay in pagoda also, The pagoda is a place for travelers to stay,This tradition has been used since ancient times.
