  • HOW TO STOP FANNING THE CLUB FACE OPEN: As I always say, there are many ways to play this game well and you don't need to follow a 'text' book method. However if you are fanning the club face open in the take away and find you cannot square up the face at impact despite all your efforts to close it down, then it may be worth watching this video, where I show you how to keep that club face square in the takeaway negating the need for compensations on the way down.

    Keeping the club face closed is a solution if you can't square it up by rolling the wrists back to the left, and many can't. Great video. Thx.

    Van, I cannot begin to tell you how I appreciate you sharing your knowledge to help golfers. I have fought an early wrist set for some time, resulting in a steep downswing, the end result being fat shots. Implementing the technique you describe in this video my ball striking improved immensely. Thank you very much!

    Hi Van,
    This is me all over. A fan open and inside resulting in a shank. Once it starts happening I cant seem to stop it, especially under pressure. I hope this helps

    Not long ago I asked Jack if he preferred to address the ball with the clubface open, square or closed. Jack looked at me with that piercing stare: "I've never seen a really good player set it square or closed at address," he said.
    Then he explained that because you generally set the club so the face is one-quarter inch or so behind the ball, it needs to be slightly open to the target line at that point. If it looked square and you didn't manipulate it during the swing, when the club returned to impact it would be slightly closed, causing a hook.
    Setting the clubface slightly open at address allows you to:
    • Release the club fully without fear of hooking.
    • Swing the club naturally with relaxed arms for maximum clubhead speed-and therefore more distance.
    • Develop better feel for how the club is aligned as it swings through impact.
    Jack got this from the best….Ben Hogan.

    Great explanation Van. I also like to think that I am keeping the club face “outside the hands”. Really frees me up from getting stuck like I used to. Really appreciate your expertise and the time you take to help us less talented golfers. Regards from Down Under in these difficult times😀

    I'm glad you addressed that fanning is not bad. I've had a lot of people say I need to close the clubface on the takeaway; However, I hit the ball far and with a slight draw with this swing. Thank you! I will not be changing my swing.

    I've been forever trying to work on my takeaway which is slightly inside and open at the to so it was refreshing to watch your myth video. My swing is definitely like your 'inside' swing but yours isn't open. So what should I do? Stick with current swing and focus on the downswing position or try and make the change as you describe in this video. I play off 5 but I'm inconsistent

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  3 года назад

      dont make a change for the sake of a position on video, do it to change ball flight. So if you lose it right a lot AND have an open face in the takeaway then work on the feelings in this video.

    I recently noticed I fan open fairly quickly at take away. I hit the ball fairly far (170 ball speed w driver) and can play a draw or fade most of the time, but I find that I lack consistency often. Do you think staying more square on takeaway would help with this?

    This might do it for me. I weakened my trail hand grip a while ago and I think i've started fanning the club open in the first foot or so of takeaway. I've been stuck at a 5 handicap for a while because I'm missing 12-14 greens per round (high fade/slice miss). Hoping this will help square me up. Thanks!

    Whats funny is that the club does rotate open on the backswing but the feeling is way later than what poor ball strikers want to believe. Look at the slow motion down the line view...that bad boy rotates once he starts lifting it. The problems start when you do it immediately on the takeaway like 80% of beginners do.

    [memo] *클럽페이스를 open 하는 Fanning 방지법 :
    Fanning은 슬라이스를 만들거나 공을 우측방향으로 가게 하는 등의 문제를 야기한다. 이것은 처음의 왼손 Wrist Angle과 관계가 있는 사항이다. 패닝을 방지하기 위한 * 첫 번째 tip은 처음 어드레스 때에 Square 한 클럽페이스를 변경함이 없이 (마치 빗자루로 쓸듯이) 그대로 오른쪽 허벅지 바깥까지 즉,Take Away까지 가져가는 것이다. 백스윙 top에서 앵글을 변경해도 상관없지만, take away 때 square 한 클럽페이스는 잘 변하지 않는다. * 2 번째 tip은 쓸듯이 두 팔을 공으로부터 멀게 뒤로 가져가는데 .. 몸통과의 관계를 유지하면서 그렇게 하라는 것이다. 즉 몸통의 한 부위인 배꼽과 두 팔의 관계를 내내 유지하면서 테이크 어웨이를 하라는 것이다 (팔이 독립적으로 움직이면 안 된다. 팔이 몸통과 따로 놀면 안 된다). 몸통이 동작을 시작하고 두 팔은 그것에 따라서 움직이면 된다.
    *3 번째 tip은 어드레스를 취했을 때, 왼팔상부(중간의 이두박근)와 어깨 사이에서 느껴지는 connection이 take away 내내 계속 유지되어야 한다.
    * 이 3가지가 서로 분리되어 하나씩만 되면 이 3가지가 섞여서 blended 된 느낌을 하나의 느낌으로 가질 수 있으면, 몸통의 움직임으로 시작하는 것에 보다 집중하면서 클럽페이스가 계속 공을 가리키게 한다.
    * 여기서 하나, Take Away를 취할 때, 팔의 움직임은 몸통의 움직임에 수동적(passive)으로 따라야 한다.
    이제, 반 필립스 프로의 (9 iron) 샷을 한 번 보고... 그 slow motion 도 함께 보자 ! 여러 번 되풀이해서 관찰해보면 위의 3가지가 잘 이행되고 있음을 알 수 있다.

    I have just started working on this lately. I'm trying to keep the clubface more closed during the backswing. Doing so helps me compress the ball at impact, but tends to cause me to come over the top. At least I think that is happening.

    You still went under plane. All you need to do is think right arm on top then right arm under.

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  6 лет назад +3

      Yelnik McGwawa nice observation! I’ve never believed too much in the importance of takeaway plane as you’ll see in my ‘Myths’ video series and having won on tour being as you say ‘under plane’ proves this quite well. This video was dealing with Club face control more specifically👍

    • @yelnikmcgwawa454
      @yelnikmcgwawa454 6 лет назад

      Van Phillips Golf I don’t disagree. Matt Kuchar goes under plane too. But you and Matt are more the exception than the rule for us amateurs. Forearm rotation also causes very high rate of closure and again very hard for us weekend players to master. Thank you for lessons.

    • @vanphillipsgolf6651
      @vanphillipsgolf6651  6 лет назад +2

      Yelnik McGwawa thanks for your support👍 Nicklaus, Nelson, Floyd, Watson all under plane, Couples, Trevino, McIlroy and many more are predominantly over plane, my point and it is one that prevents so many players from achieving their potential (not to mention really good tour players that are ruined, me included until I taught myself otherwise)is that positional thinking does not make hitting the ball easier.
