In the process of my writing a book about "Keeping Faith when Beliefs Change", I have discovered the wisdom of Dr. Marcus Borg and of Dr.Bart Ehrman and others a wonderful help in my keeping faith even though I cannot really believe some parts of our Creeds. The answer comes from LOVE, forgiveness and many other qualities of the nature of God. I am thankful for this help, rather than giving up on my faith, I can grow in the 21st century thinking and still love the God of my growing up
years, with some modifications. God is Love.

Six years after your comment, I have found Dr Borg today and he may help me keep a faith but in a new form. Bart Ehrman and others have helped with destruction to ground zero and am seeing what if anything may rise from the ruins! I realised earlier this week that the only fact about God I wanted to trust in, was God is Love. It may be synchronicity, but I am glad to read more about Marcus Borg today which lead me here

Wonderful video! Minor correction: Actually, we Methodists do *not* believe that humans can become perfect in this life -- rather that we can strive toward it and get closer to it. The Church of the Nazarene split off from the Methodists over this issue and it is they who think that we can become perfect in this life.

If Christianity believed that, how could they have kept slaves? They lowered the threshold so low for women and slaves, that it is almost impossible for anything harmful done to them to be considered a crime. Look in the marriage, they made the husband a God and gave him the same exalted status as Christ. It is useless to speak of love or sacrifice from husbands. How does love subordinate its equal? What sacrifice? The wife does everything and it is taken for granted, but when the husband does the smallest thing, he is a hero, it is considered sacrifice! They were not consistent at all when it came to women and slaves.

I hope he was saved! you can study and discuss all about Jesus Christ your whole life and never really know Jesus personally, which does not make you saved by Him!

Much too sensible to ever catch on in the States. You need to be a raving nut to succeed in America.

While I can appreciate and agree with Borg’s criticism of various sectarian doctrinal disputes, he uses these valid problems to undermine essential doctrines that all Christians share and which do matter.
As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians, now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. ... If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and your are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied.
And when Christ talked to the Sadducees, Borg’s spiritual ancestors, they questioned him about the plausibility of a physical resurrection. He responded, ‘You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God. ... have you not read what was said to you by God, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.’
And when he spoke with the Pharisees, Borg’s other spiritual ancestors, they agreed with him that loving God and loving our neighbor are the greatest commandments. ( ogives the Pharisees believed in Love but conspired to have Jesus killed). So because this was not enough, Jesus asked them, ‘What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?’ They said, ‘the son of David.’ He said to them, ‘how is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet’? (Psalm 110). You can poke apart at the gospels if you like but the question is still there from the Psalms.
If you don’t believe Jesus was raised from the dead then just move on. Call yourself new age or whatever but don’t confuse people, or yourself, by referring to yourself as a Christian. Better to be cold or hot than remain lukewarm.

This is inspirational if... you believe in a god exists and that it's the same god as depicted in the bible. If you don't start with that assumption then... it's just white noise.

Bang! just in the beginning wrong! Of course the Holy Spirit is proceeds from the Father and also from Jesus! Jesus Himself told his disciples before he ascended to Heaven that he will send them the Holy Spirit as the power from above. Most theologians are not even Christians, so sad!

This fellow was a Gnostic in his presuppositions. The Apostles warned the believers to be aware of these men and women who were once with them but they left and start preaching another gospel.

Dr. Borg and I have nothing in common. If Christianity is about what he said I haven't experienced it, nor would I want to. Was this meant to be inspirational?

Day1DotOrg Did you write,"We obviously disagree?" Rhetorical but.......
How is it obvious when I made mention of four particular points of reference you have not responded to?
No challenge to you but when " we OBVIOUSLY disagree", do you not think it
would support your opinion by explaining what our disagreement is?
I'm not meaning to be a jerk. I am, however, offended by people that give Bible reading Christ followers a bad representation
by the misinterpretation of scripture (for whatever reasons) regardless of position, mutual agreement, following, creed, denominational congregational alliance and/or even financial responsibilities of a church.
So, Day1DotOrg, do we have anything in common? Obviously?

I see it was a year ago that you made a comment - I hope in that time you have learned something - because Dr Borg gave the most simple and honest answer regarding what Christianity was intended to be. I am sorry, if you don't understand.
