    This is very similar to what happened 3 years earlier at the World Cup with Scotland. For some context this World Cup had not been a good one for the Scots as they had lost 3-1 to Peru & tied Iran (the weakest team in the tournament) 1-1. They also had a player sent home (Willie Johnston) after he tested positive for a banned stimulant. The night before their final group game vs the Netherlands, the entire Scottish squad including the coaches (heck even the team doctor participated) decided to get drunk with their fans as a way of thanking them for travelling all the way to Argentina which was ruled by a military dictatorship at the time. However unlike the Rams, Scotland actually played their best game of the entire tournament while hung over beating the Netherlands 3-2 in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. Even though Scotland won this match, it wasn't enough to advance to the second round as Peru thrashed Iran in the other group finale to progress. Peru would be involved later in the tournament in a massive controversy in their match vs Argentina where they were accused of lying down & giving up (they lost 6-0) so that Argentina could advance to the World Cup final on home soil in exchange for 10,000 pounds of grain from Argentina's government.

    Coming from a Cowboys fan, you’re right about those Ram teams from ‘73 to ‘80 they were fun to watch. The ‘81-‘82 Cowboys could have gone to the Superbowl in January ‘82 had it not been for The Catch. That most likely would’ve been the last Superbowl win for the Landry era Cowboys.

    I was wondering how the Cowboys won by only 12 points. The Rams were lucky it wasn't worse. I'm not sure what those Rams who were at that hotel bar were thinking about. It's as if they forgot why they were in the Metroplex in the first place.

    Bobby Layne got drunk the night before a game all the time. When Alex Karras (Mongo in Blazin’ Saddles) was a rookie Layne took him under his wing. He was getting liquored up before games with Layne. Layne would even have a few at halftime.

      The Raiders were in town for the 1977 AFC Championship game with the Broncos. A writer from the Denver Post saw John Matuszak out drinking and partying at 4AM. He called his friend Red Miller the Broncos head coach. So during the game, they ran the ball at a hungover John Matuszak. They ran roughshod over the Tooz.

    Going to a bar and not drinking? Kind of like, well, trying marijuana and not inhaling? Didn't someone famous say that at one time? Also, were the five Rams players ever publicly identified?

    1. In addition to Sunday nights, ABC also did select Thursday night games from 78-86. Then from 83-86, they did a Friday night game in week 16.
    2. The Rams in the 70's were very solid (in fact, their run from 66-80 was consistent winning; with the exception of going 6-7-1 in 1972). What held the Rams back was shuffling through so many starting QB's: Roman Gabriel, Pete Beathard, James Haris, John Hadl, Joe Namath, Pat Haden, Ron Jaworski, Vince Ferragamo, Jeff Ruteledge.

    The Rams would finish 6-10, out of the playoffs for the first time since 1972. The turbulence started before the 1981 season as QB Vince Ferragamo had a dispute with Rams management, so he left for the CFL. Who didn’t have disputes with mgmt anyways? QB Pat Haden is released after the season, he wasn’t better than Ferragamo anyways. In 1982, which is the strike shortened season, Vince Ferragamo returns to the Rams, but the Rams were still in disarray as they finish 2-7. HC Ray Malavasi is fired at seasons end. During the 1970s if the Rams had a well established QB instead of changing QB so often the Rams would have been to possibly 2 Super Bowls. This was a great video.

  • @Bigchet1223
    @Bigchet1223 3 месяца назад +4

    Rams at that time could never win the big one. Biggest problem is they never had stability at qb..Rams usually won nfc west but then got beat by Minnesota or Dallas in the playoffs. 79 they made the super bowl but lost to my steelers. They went from john hadl, james harris, ron Jaworski, pat haden,joe namath, Vince Ferragamo. Ferragamo bolted to the CFL in 81 because malvasi didn't believe in benching a guy because of injury. Ferragamo was better than Haden and the reason they finally made the super bowl in 79.

    Sorry, not even close to my favorite 'team plays game hung over' story. That would be the Detroit Red Wings visiting the New York Rangers on April 5, 1970 the last day of the NHL season. Red Wings had clinched a playoff berth the night before and done a lot of post-game celebrating. The Rangers and Montreal were neck-and-neck in a dogfight for the final playoff spot in the Eastern division.
    Wings goalie Roger Crozier, who couldn't touch alcohol due to a medical condition, made 56 saves, and was still beaten nine times, as his hung over teammates gave him no help whatsoever. Throw in the stupidest tie-breaker rule in the history of professional league sports, and you get a ridiculous number of empty-net goals in both New York and Chicago (where Montreal was playing their finale) leading to Montreal missing the playoffs for the only time in a 47(!) year stretch.
    OK, this comment may not be the most 'on brand' for an NFL channel. But that is just such a great 'team plays game hung over' story.
