This isn't the Devils Elevator. It uses a part of the principle but a double backer is used to further convince the spectator by displaying their card an additional time before the "wrist kill" move and the apparent loss of the spectators card in the deck. Further removing the card after the "wrist kill" and performing your cut of choice and inserting what appears to be their card in one half and completing the cut by placing the half that is supposed to hold the spectators card on the bottom. I believe the additional display and convincers in Vernon's routine are the true reasons the effect fooled Houdini. Having logical and believable motivation(s)for each action or "move" are what take any "trick" to miracle status this truly suspending disbelief for the audience and creating a truly magical experience for those the magii is sharing with.

(After Houdini claimed that if anybody showed him a trick within 3 tries, he can figure it out) Dai showed him, multiple times and failed to get it.
There are other ways of doing that effect that looks no way as suspicious as yours, try controlling the card to the bottom and then you can slip the band above the bottom card using a pinky pulldown and around the deck and go from there
Dewalt Robot Studios most tricks are used with a lot of pinky breaks, lol and yes there's card tricks where you don't have to do any pinky breaks but you many have to use it so you could control cards and stuff D
