I've read about this story several times, most recently in David Copperfield's FORKMAZING new book, but watching you tell the story AS you're performing the trick again and again like Vernon did is like watching the 3D version of a movie in 4K that you've seen before only in 2D on VHS.
Queen of spades was the card HH selected. There is a Documentary called Grand Illusion that has Dai Vernon talking about this. Also, Dai Vernon says he put the card in the middle of the deck, not the second position. Dai could deal from the middle of the deck and top switch in one movement. He was a master card manipulator. As Dai spoke of, this is a way the trick can be done, but what he did is a lot more mystifying, which is why it through Houdini off.
Wonderful story and fantastic trick CM! This is one of my favorite tricks to perform! I love performing tricks with Double Backers! Amazing video! #Roadto15K!
My understanding is that on the last repitition, Dai Vernon held the deck with the initialed card face up. He then did a double lift and flipped the double back card and Houdini's card over as one. Then he took the top card, the double backer but supposedly Houdini's card, and buried it in the center of the deck. Dai Vernon flipped over the top card revealing Houdini's card.
Nice one👍 When I saw the title of the upload, I thought to myself this is going to be interesting and it was well presented with lots of historical facts. BTW I did reply to you about sharing my version but not sure if you got it though. 👍😊👍
I read where Houdini’s wife wrote to Dai Vernon (without Houdini’s knowledge) begging him to reveal how this trick was done but she never received a reply and Houdini went to his grave not knowing how it was done. 😢
I think your research is incomplete. Genii magazine did an article on this some years ago which if I remember correctly included a picture. It was taken at the dinner meeting that the incident took place. Also a crucial move you missed allowed Houdini to turn the card over. Also it was not two cards stuck together. It was a before unknown method of producing a double backer.
I met a friend of Dai Vernon 25 years ago. He told me the real story and also how Houdini was fooled. Its not because of the double back. Let me know if you would like the details of what rely happened
You did very well. But……I know for a fact that it is not a double back card that did it. Remember, Vernon only wanted to do tricks that were mysterious. In front of your nose. He even said on an interview, that he did a Second deal for Houdini. Which make sense. Cuz yes, double lift is easy to spot. But by doing a push off second deal. It literally looks like you are taking the top card. One more fact at that time “The Expert at the card table” was still quite new. And people didn’t know that much about til Vernon made it popular.
Houdinis claim of King of cards was bullshit. Great marketing. As a skilled card magician he wasn't. He didn't have a lot of respect of his peers during his time. Houdini was the Chris angel of his peers. With that said though. The success he's had can't be denied. Everyone knows houdini till this day. Say what u will about Chris Angel too he's done well. No matter what when u have success people will have issues with it.

Oh wow, that's crazy!
Instantly figured it out. I am above Houdini. 😁
That’s because this ISNT the trick that fooled Houdini.
So, Houdini came up with his own kind of "Fool Me", but didn't have what it takes to actually enjoy being fooled...
facts!

According to Dai Vernon, Houdini was not a good sleight of hand artist. Houdini was good at self-promotion (and escapes).
Yup!

Don't put Houdini in the same category as that fraud Chris Angel who relies on camera cuts and editing and stooges (people who are in on the trick)
The clip I saw at vai doing it on an old tv show, he added the signed card to the middle of the deck. !

Dai Vernon says in this video Houdini picked the 4 of diamonds

Not even trying to be funny.. but did Houdini even do card tricks? lol
Now that's a good question!
Thats not original routine
This is in no way easy or simple.
