@@CantusTropus Considering the defensive nature of Skarmory, armor seems more appropriate. The y at the end is from the word sky, they basically just stuffed the word armor within the word sky.
@Trubbish and Garbodor It would be pretty interesting for lore reasons, though! Especially considering that feathers from Skarmory are canonically used to make knives and swords.
I remember 10 years ago, playing Emerald, being one of those kids that only stacked attacking moves. Then there was that battle against Steven on Meteor falls. He started spiking with Skarmory and I was like "I'm gonna win", then every time I switched my Pokémon, they were half dead. That's when I prompted myself to learn to use status moves. My first experience with competitive, I think.
You know, Skarmory’s actually had a really cool competitive career. It consistently remained one of the best Pokemon in OU for five straight generations, including the Weather Wars of Gen 5 and the Mega Incursion Of Gen 6. It did this not by destroying everything in its way, but by instead doing the inverse: it remained on top by being the wall that kept the OU giants at bay, standing its ground against some of the scariest Pokemon in competitive history. Plus, it was even able to wall the literal Poke-Gods of Ubers to great effect. That’s just really impressive, the immovable wall upon which all of OU was defined for five generations straight. Good job, Skarmory.
Skarmory actually has a pretty undewhelming base stat total with 465 but a decent destripution of those stats, a great typing and most importantly a large list of important support moves have made it into one of the best competitive Pokèmon for a long, long time. Seein how many great mons fall victim to bigger, better versions of themselves through powercreep it's insane how long Skarmory managed to stay relevant.
Corviknight: I have arrived. Skarmory: You're hear to give me competition? Corviknight: Have you not seen your ranking? I have bested you! Celesteela: To be fair, I did it first! Ferrothorn: *Sips Tea*
Fun Fact : Mantine actually used to be Skarmory's counterpart. They're both flying type Pokémon introduced in Gen 2, was right next to each other in the Pokedex and had the same base stat just with their Physical and Special stats switched. However Mantine is no longer considered Skarmory's counterpart since it got a pre-evolution in Gen 4 and gained a +20 buff into it's HP
That's incredible. So...Skarmory is only used in Smogon competitions? Or Wi-Fi Tournaments, or just Pokémon Showdown...because I haven't seen a VGC tournament based on Singles yet
Efraín Rumbo Pretty much yep. It’s a Smogon Pokèmon through and through. As said it’s useless in VGC because there’s barely any switching there so no need for hazards, it doesn’t do nearly enough immediate damage which is very important in doubles, and because 2 Pokémon targeting Skarmory easily take it out compared to 1 on 1’s.
All in all: Skarmory was one the best Pokémon to ever exist A Swiss Army knife easily adapting to anything the meta would throw at it never falling off to powercreep and a must have for almost any team throughout the years
@@rajt9996 I mean it was proven after dlc that Corviknight is indeed better than Skarmory or rather fits on more teams because they perform different roles and straight up comparing them doesn't make sense.
There is no doubt that Skarmory is one of the best singles Pokémon of all time, Skar being UU now it's simply wrong, this thing belongs to OU as one of the most iconic and important competitive Pokémon ever.
Honestly Gen 8 easily surpasses both Gen 5 and Gen 6 in terms of powercreep: Cinderace, Dracovish and Galarian-Darma are all banned to ubers moreover Dynamax as a mechanic literally breaks the game (the immunity to flinching, fazing, OHKOs etc is just insane) and Crowned Zacian is just... Ugh!
@@lynxfresh5214 That doesn't really prove that gen 8 got that much in terms of powercreep. Dynamax is only allowed in Ubers, and so is Zacian, in a game where we have a very limited amount of legendaries in the game. Most of the tier shifting happened because of the addition of new moves and new items, as well as the limited Pokedex.
@@Mepphy99 I guess it depends on what you prefer, Skarm provides hazards and walls harder on the physical side and Corv has U-turn for momentum, pressure and viable offensive sets. In the current meta Corv is better since hazards are so common and nearly every mon gets them. It's sad since Skarm has always been great and still is but Corv is better rn

@@attackonsamurott4418 I'm not saying that gen 8 are stronger then gen 5. Gen 8 is a big power creep spot like gen 5. Alot of pokemon got new moves and alot of power moves got more wide spread(ex close combat ). tyranitar and agislash are UU. When did we ever think that could happen.
@@danieldragotti2608 Aegislash only fell to UU due to not being used over the dlc due to "new toy syndrome" and the higher drop-off point for tiers.
Huh. And I thought AuraGuardian's the only one who infiltrated Kellen's office.

However Mantine is no longer considered Skarmory's counterpart since it got a pre-evolution in Gen 4 and gained a +20 buff into it's HP

@@heartofthefluft8541 It could be used in Battle Spot Singles and other Singles official metagames

If skarmory had +10 spdef and +10 HP corvi-skar would be the face OU lol
Honestly Gen 8 easily surpasses both Gen 5 and Gen 6 in terms of powercreep: Cinderace, Dracovish and Galarian-Darma are all banned to ubers moreover Dynamax as a mechanic literally breaks the game (the immunity to flinching, fazing, OHKOs etc is just insane) and Crowned Zacian is just... Ugh!
They had to make a stronger version of skarmory to finnally make it drop to UU. That's something for skarm to be proud of
@@lynxfresh5214 That doesn't really prove that gen 8 got that much in terms of powercreep.
