  • One of the best things to do in Kyoto in my opinion is getting fully dressed up in a kimono and visiting a bunch of temples and the bamboo grove. In Arashiyama, there are so many old, traditional streets that you'll feel like you traveled back in time, especially when you walk along the Saga Toriimoto preserved street.
If you want to get the best out of your full day in Arashiyama, I highly suggest this itinerary. I've done it twice and you get to see so many amazing shrines. Just make sure to have enough time to stop by one of the many local kimono rental shops and get dressed up! One suggestion if you plan on doing the full itinerary (or as much as you can) is to wear sneakers or some comfortable shoes to walk in under your kimono instead of the sandals that come with the outfit because those sandals are extremely thin and definitely not made for walking long distances. My feet were in so much pain by the end of the itinerary.
Arashiyama is easily one of my favorite areas I've visited during the whole trip and we've visited a lot of places within our 16 day trip. Definitely a must visit when in Japan!
