    I love Kenpo and all. It's just that when I switched over to Muay Thai and other combative training such as mma. I realized a lot of these techniques and combinations were impractical. Nobody stays loose or still while you try to execute most of these combinations. What I mean is that you kind of have to adapt and make up your own in a real fight.

      Nailed it, opponents will cover up, create distance or start throwing bombs even with their eyes closed (regardless of skill level). Its built-in flinch response. Nothing learned required. One year later, but felt I had to say ... :)

    • @chrisbrunskill6525
      @chrisbrunskill6525 4 года назад

      @jadehelm288 0 Hmm, I agree its not realistic. That was entirely the point I made in response to Lovely Time's original post. Maybe I was unclear - appologies. As I said, basic flinch response won't allow someone to stand still and be 'tazed' as you so aptly put it. :)

      When I studied Kenpo it was really enjoyable, but unfortunately the lack of ground principles and techniques makes this martial art very incomplete. And also a lot of people do the quick slaps on the gi that make cool sounds but wouldn't do much in a streetfight. And with the suing lawsuit generation, eye gouges, throat punches, could cost you a pretty penny if you use these techniques in regular non life threatening fights where there isn't CCTV.

    It's always funny to me how people get the learning process of Kenpo wrong. These people are in training to learn how to follow up on attacks and or leaning how flow from one technique to another.. Great introduction. Thanks for sharing.. Keep up the great work..For those of you that really question the style, go find a good instructor, he'll show you..

    I have back ground in Kempo, Thai boxing and wrestling. Kempo is very adaptable and flexible. I use it as a base discipline because I find the balance in stand up more flexible. (I’m southpaw, fight in orthodox stance) it allows and teaches imo more power from different angles and techniques like these Ingrain the importance of momentum. It’s not so much the technique itself but rather not stopping your momentum to assess the results of the blow. Continuing to push your opponent back and not allowing them to slip. This is very complimentary to wrestling, specially when first learning take downs, as it gives you wonderful base for setups and follow thru.

    The first 30 seconds is why I stopped doing kenpo. I was looking for realistic and practical not flashy and impractical (your opponent will not just stand there casually letting you hurt them). I then found muay thai and my life changed forever.
    Edit - the entire video is why I stopped doing Kenpo karate.

    Notice how the guy being hit stands still for about 3 seconds while being hit. In a real fight he will not stay motionless. He will punch u back before you complete those techniques

    • @justinritter5028
      @justinritter5028 6 лет назад +8

      george harrison the attacks are minor vs major, minor attacks are used for a reaction from your opponent its called conditioned responses, ie how the body reacts to a strike. major attacks are the finish, however ill agree even being a kenpo practitioner for 10 years these techniques are drawn out. but too answer your question the techniques are used too overwhelm an attacker so by the time i hit you you won't be moving anymore. thats the point

    • @ickbar
      @ickbar 5 лет назад +2

      Don't often agree wit the motionless of it, but most won't punch back immediatly. Most cower or back or lean away. Most aren't trained to fight despite the manly bullshit talk that goes around.

      Absolutely right. While sparring no-one remembers a damn single one of those nifty sequences. It ends up being a head-hunting match. Only good thing I remember was a back kick. Delivered a good one to this Brown belt female's liver and she cried. I felt awful, sort of.

      I've never pulled off a full technique in sparring match, but I've managed a few checks and traps. Part of the reason is sparring matches are not full contact. The other, the reff stops match to call a point. In the end, sparring matches are not very realistic. Even if injuries happen by mistake. These guys know there stuff. Nice demonstration.

      Thats a funny joke. Ken Po is designed to deflect any incoming attacks and destroy the opponents ability to retaliate
      they just train the way they do so no one gets hurt

    • @nhz671
      @nhz671 7 лет назад +11

      I must disagree sir. It is taught in Kenpo that you must commit to destroy a threat. That means that once you attack you don't stop until that opponent who poses a threat is subdued. Im sure you just see the techniques as trivial because the one demonstrated on is not fighting back.

    Kenpo Karate comes from Kung Fu. Few people know this. You can see it in the forms that they do. Even the Chinese have gone away from Kung Fu because of all the negative talk. SanShou is a battle tested from of Kung Fu. It is Kung Fu with several forms of wrestling and leg sweeps.

    I like kenpo, tae kwon do, aikido, all Okinawa karate types of martial arts and their belt ranking system as a sense of accomplishment and progression. There is value in having good form and discipline. There is reward and humility in traditional martial arts.
    But it is also extremely important to train in kickboxing and jiu jitsu in the event of a real fight.
    Sparring for a few weeks in a BJJ school could save your life some day.

Loved it, but I later joined a Karate club that felt much more alive and dynamic in a lot of ways, so I enjoyed the Karate club more. Naturally though, being my first martial art I have a real soft spot for Kempo and always felt that it was leagues and leagues more badass than the straight Karate ..and it is. This is Kenpo - mainly a striking art. The practitioners here although not as smooth as Larry Tatum in their performance do highlight the key concepts of Kenpo. I am noticing the comments about hitting someone 27 times without them moving towards you. This obviously is a demonstration. The idea of 27 strikes etc.. teaches the student to "Follow up" with multiple strikes incorporating "Strike from where the hand is" - a key concept of Kenpo. You don't want to rely on just 1 punch or 1 kick to eliminate the threat, you need to keep going until the threat is eliminated. This is why you are seeing multiple strikes in rapid succession in these techniques. You're not going to be successful at throwing 15 strikes at someone, but Kenpo will teach you to block, punch, punch etc..

  • @Mennogames2002
    @Mennogames2002 8 лет назад +16

    For everyone saying American kenpo/Kenpo Karate is useless, as these practitioners aren't fighting back. This is a demonstration. So they won't actually be fighting for real, and they will demonstrate some techniques from the sport. American Kenpo/Kenpo Karate haa very fast techniques so you can basically not react in a way as an attacker if the defender reacts fast, properly and with power. It also depends on the one who is teaching you, every school teaches differently.

    I am sure you guys have worked towards improving kenpo from its original form to a more dynamic approach.
    It would be much better if you could include defense againt rapid multiple attacks such as in shorinji kempo or Filipino MA so that the techniques will look more realistic. Single attacks with attacker stands still while defender launch more than 10 moves is really really unrealistic.
    I think compare to other Kenpo afiliation around only AKKI can do it :)

    Most of the techniques used in this video I have never used in kempo. I train with a 40 year sensei (been a sensei for 40 years) and most of these techniques are useful but never seen this type on kempo

    In my opinion, all the techniques are basics of how to move, and reference points. I’m sure you will never be able to complete a whole sequence, but maybe a beginning, middle, or ending. Don’t count out kenpo, all of it is useful ( practical) under the right circumstances. Just gotta see it in the right light.😊

    I would like to see a little more settling on the strikes utilizing concepts of path of action and different timing between the strikes to maximize contact manipulation for the next target of opportunity. Your base and hips is where you generate 80% of your power not just your upper limbs. Some practitioners execute their moves too fast to hide their in- adequacy's of the missing moves applied in a properly applied technique. Slow is fast. Accuracy equals effectiveness. Breathing develops maximum power. Principles of motion are basic that should always be applied from a white belt to black belts.

      Finally an educated person explains the science of kempo. To a ego fighter this make look fake. When in reality it is not only meant for self protection but also to pratice you self control. There is no need for full contact fighting. Kempo has the same strategy as any other Chinese martial arts and that is looseness,pliability and adaptibility. More force is not the right strategy nor in a fight nor in life. It creates recklessness. And that is clearly not what martial arts is about.

    I really ask myself why there's people saying "Kenpo doesn't work, my karate is better, all that I got is better" Did you really get a real lesson from Martial Arts? Like be humble, Be a honorable person, Do not presume what you learned in Martial Arts etc.
    Also, I forget this, Kenpo Karate was made for real self defense and have a right discipline, Not to flex or presume what you learned.

      I agree it is a bad image to discredit AND boast at the same time. In many ways, Kenpo practitioners have already won that battle. :)

I'm gonna get a camera soon and go through all the techniques, what's the point of them and how parts of them could actually be used. I hate saying I even know this stuff because of the crap way it's tought.

    Kenpo is very much a mix of traditional karate, "Kung Fu", and a touch of older form juijutsu. It won't get you anywhere in an MMA match because half the techniques aren't even sport legal. It's also true that canned techniques with a willing partner, as seen in the video, will never make you a great fighter on their own. However, I can tell you that those "million slaps" are pretty effective in a self defense situation when the targets are the eyes and throat. The toughest man I ever faught studied a large number of martial arts, but his primary base for his self defense school was a modified version of Kenpo. He was scary good at both sport and self defense martial arts. It was an honor to get my ass kicked by Kenpo techniques.

    Edit: Alright, change my mind. I just watched Kenpo vs Taekwondo and most of the kenpo guy's techniques are pretty swift! I don't think My TKD would not work on kenpo! Damn.

      If you're being attacked full speed, anybody would get hit, even the best MMA fighter.... I personally have been training for 8 years in MMA (muay thai, BJJ, boxing and karate) and have been in my share of fights either defending myself of friends. I got hit in almost every fight and thanks to my training I knew how to take a hit... That's one of the most important parts of training, learning to take hits. My karate did help me in my fights. I did not do Kenpo karate but I still did an ancient Japanese martial art. Where I trained we did spar with contact tho.
      Basically what I'm saying is that if they only train like this then yeah it's useless but if they train with contact then it COULD be much more effective than you think...

    I have to say. I've trained mma and jiu-jitsu for 25 years as well as Kajukenbo mo duk pai. Kenpo and kung-fu are real. People just don't understand the difference between taking people out and sport martial arts. Mma is a sport like boxing and kickboxing. On the street with weapons and no cups or reffs. Where eye pokes and groin strikes win fights its different. Mma guys have one dimension but there are multiple.

    The thumbs down obviously have not encountered the devastatingly effectiveness of combat Kenpo! Street combat Karate is taking out all close limbs and eyes breaking collar bone and crushing the throat. Try HARDCORE street combat kenpo Karate before judging ineffectiveness

    While I appreciate that this is just a demonstration, from my experience I’ve found that three strikes is all you need before going in for clinch, grapple or breaking. Again I get that this isn’t what you do in the real fight and that the rapid attacks are for when the opponent is stunned and that the mentality behind Kempo is death by a thousand cuts but I’m curious if anyone has attempted to modernize it like what Bruce Lee did with Wing Chun?

    Those types of counter, a person getting them would not just stand there in one place he/she would be pushed back by them so you would have to allow yourself the movement forward to do the rest of them on the person attacking you.
