Meet British artist and sculptor Phyllida Barlow, who here shares her personal advice to young people.
“Let your imagination have your respect. Huge respect! I know there are practical things to do like getting jobs, but that shouldn’t ever deter you from acknowledging what you really want.”
“Don’t be afraid of standing on your own and not being part of the crowd. Have courage and imagination to do what you want to do.”
Born in 1944 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Phyllida Barlow has spent a life in art - both as a teacher and an artist in her own right. Today, she belongs among the most interesting and acknowledged figures in the British and international art scene, representing Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2017. For more than 50 years, Barlow has taken inspiration from her surroundings to create imposing installations that can be at once menacing and playful. She creates anti-monumental sculptures from inexpensive, low-grade materials such as cardboard, fabric, plywood, polystyrene, scrim and cement. These constructions are often painted in industrial or vibrant colours, the seams of their building left at times visible, revealing the means of their making.
Phyllida Barlow was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner at her studio in London in April 2022.

Good advice to older artists too. Phyllida Barlow has practiced what she preaches and I have great admiration for her.

Thank you! Surely this is sound advice for all artists, as a middle-aged struggling artist I really need to hear these heartfelt words, so thank you again!

When my psychiatrist tood me to be myself choose what I wanted,to which was art. My mother because bitter and nasty and told me yo get my offic job back. Then she and my brother colluded for me to go and live with my father, so all the art business I had was left and lost, though he promised great opportunities with him andnhis hotel, but my step mother objected to my presence so I had to go. I ended up totally abandoned in Brighton , so much for going for what you want!
