The nano cortex capture sounded slightly better to me, but you do get a great deal with the headrush. If you're on a budget or just need a mini quad cortex go with the headrush, but if you got a bunch of pedals or plugins to cover your effects get the nano cortex

I had an MX5 and loved it. I ended up selling it and moving to Ampero II because of how the customer support worked. I beta tested for them and they said that long term support was to be expected for the first 3 releases. Then with no warning they announced they were now legacy products when the Flex Prime was released. I wasn't impressed with their responsiveness to the testers either. Great product and I miss parts of it. But I wasn't pleased with those interactions.

same thing with my mx5, would we trust them again? I'm not buying into any of their products ever again. Scamming their customers like that. Like come on, a 3 years old product becomes legacy with no support and not desktop application yet!

It’s been a while since watching a video, but I started binging when I saw your announcement. I am wishing her a speedy recovery!
As for the video, it’s weird, I couldn’t hear the switch from the cortex to the headrush, but I could hear from the headrush to the Cortex. Even in the blind test. The cortex sounded just a bit fuller, but for live use it’s a negligible difference.

I can’t lie, I’ve definitely bought something and then looked for purchase validation. I’ve had times where something I have bought, Glenn and others didn’t like. That being said, sometimes I have found that I still really like whatever it is and get good tones. Other times, Glenn and others were right and I should’ve watched a video first.
The point I making is, Glenn will be the first to tell you, but whatever you want. But he is trying to SAVE YOU MONEY!! There’s not a lot of people out here trying to do that.
Good on you Glenn, been subscribed for years and am not going anywhere!

I’ve been a Headrush user for about 4 years now. I started with the Pedalboard and then bought the Prime the day it was released. They make absolutely killer, rock solid gear that’s easy to use and sounds great. The only gripe I ever really had about my boards was the lack of a computer editing software. Come on, even entry level modelers have that! But with the most recent update they finally added one. So editing and creating new rigs is easier than ever.

I sent the Nano Cortex back because of dropout/latency issues when switching presets.
I then purchased the Friedman IR-J (600 $) and a M-Vave Chocolate midi controller (amazon $25) to switch the presets in the preamp and It is all the tone I ever wanted. Now I pair it with efx I already have (my pedalboard of pedals and Eventide H9, Boss SDE3000 and power amp of my choosing).
Most of us have a lot of gear we've already purchased and tweaked to our liking, so adding a preamp or a pedal is fairly easy.
This video is for someone who wants to completely start anew with a new do it all unit.

They’re fun, but they’re not for everybody. I love my helix but you definitely have to have patience to essentially build a new rig for every preset. The process of picking every pedal, amp, cab, mic models for the cab, reverb, etc from like a hundred options and then programming scenes or bypasses for every preset can get exhausting at times, especially if you don’t already know what the gear sounds like.

I went from Helix LT to Headrush PedalBoard, then got the MX5 as a backup for it when gigging, but almost immediately switched to using the MX as my PRIMARY rig. The new Flex Prime has a bunch of cool new toys, but for the core functionality I can get everything I need ouf of the MX5 which is a bargain at $350 CAD in the used market. When they actually make the performance value of it better (mostly MIDI implementation) or add XLR on-board I might consider upgrading. Maybe next gen! (or unless a great discount hits my radar!)

The certain things that surrounds the parts makes a huge difference.
That the main difference in low quality and high quality conversation these days now the conversion chips are super cheap.
It does mean there's also a smaller gap... just there's a greater cost in the parts surrounding these parts still.
The only other thing is the fact companies have to make money so all the parts seem cheap until you decide to build it yourself and quickly hit the constant walls of frustrating things that you give up and just buy something.
That all being said... a lot of companies mark things up quite a bit more than other companies and that when great advice from someone like you comes in.
I myself have had a bunch of horrible buys in the past... this channel doesn't help me that often because this is not me field instruments... but there's been some great studio advice along the way, things like CAT5 cables... then, even if this isn't my field, it's entertaining and always love any content cutting through the BS, that is always tasty whatever the subject is lol

Hot damn those were almost identical! I definitely heard a slight difference, is that difference worth $50? Oh hell yeah it is. It’s amazing how far things have come in the amp sim world. I would actually love to see your take on a software amp sim with a mobile interface/laptop/reamp box vs a hardware amp sim. Software side has come a LONG way too. Imo it comes down to more about workflow in the hardware amp sim than the actual sound. The sound is definitely good enough and yet it still keeps improving. And never forget that in the 2000s pro engineers thought a line 6 pod was good enough for pro records 😂.

Not only that, but the $50 dollar difference, there is a huge extra feature. Amp capturing. The Headrush doesn't have it. Sure the Headrush has more effects, but when it comes down to it, I'll take amp capturing over a $40 overdrive, lol. He keeps comparing 3 different products to each other that are 3 wildly different products. The Quad Cortex is an all in one unit. You don't really need anything to get what most want out of a modeler/capturing device. No extra hardware, it works all by itself. The Headrush is a modeler, not a capturing unit. The Nano is a capturing unit with some onboard effects. It's basically an amp replacement for people who are tired of lugging their amp around. They can capture their amp and put the Nano on their pedalboard right next to the effects they already use with their amp.

@@travisspaulding2222 i guess but these days it seems it's pretty easy to get the captures online or whatever. I think what also matters is what your use case is. as i mentioned what your workflow is. for many this is more than suitable for others they want an all in one package. and that's fine. at this point i don't think there's really an amp that is fully better than another but they serve different purposes and different users. which is how i think it should work. the focus in the past was all about quality of simulation and now i think it's more on user experience and your needs. personally i have no use for hardware amp sims, they are expensive and take up space. i don't play live outside of streams on twitch. so it's not adding anything for me, but i also have plenty of friends that play shows constantly and use stuff like this.

@@CreativeMindsAudio Yeah, these units are for live use. If a guitarist has no intention of ever playing live, then they would be better off taking $50 and buying a Neural DSP plugin to get the tones that Glenn just got. They run their Black Friday sale at the end of November pricing their plugins at half off. That's the move if you're a studio guitarist. I have yet to see a better deal out there.

@@travisspaulding2222 oh totally! but i also can't tell you how many engineers i know swear by having a kemper or similar hardware amp sim in their studio because it's 'better' same with guitarists. I'm just like yeah it doesn't feel much better, maybe if you like turning knobs it's helpful from a workflow standpoint, but also navigating menus on those devices is just annoying af. at least the axe fx and helix have a digital controller. but not every one of these units has that at a good quality.
i think people are stuck in the past and think that hardware is better. all over the place it's often about the same quality but a different workflow to get an end result and that workflow sometimes influences the result. it's like playing on a keyboard controller vs a midi guitar controller. but imo if the price is so drastically different i'm not sure it justifies the workflow benefits. I have seen tons of bands use laptops live with all their plugin rig on it auto switching between patches sync'd up to midi and the drummer controlling everything. for a broke musician it's probably a lot harder to afford this and they also likely don't know how to (or want to spend their time) properly set a rig like that up. so it's easier to just get a hardware device. it's not like these pedals and stuff don't have computers inside of them that can also fail (and likely do).

@@CreativeMindsAudio There's always hardware. To do what you suggest live requires a lot more than a laptop. In order to run a live show on a laptop for the guitarist, requires a click track, which requires an IEM system, which is incredibly expensive to do it right, and then you still have to buy all of the software to run it live like Ableton Live. In the end, if you're not already doing that, the Quad Cortex is actually much cheaper.

if you want to build it yourself there's a whole DSP DIY kit for 89 USD that has as many knobs and switches as the nano but you have to solder it yourself or it costs more. It's also opensource and can become literally anything you want - there's a massive repo already out there with ready to go downloadable configurations. Did I mention opensource? yep so if you want to change something, you can simply *change* it (hardware OR software). 🙂

Also, one last note with the flex, you can't do cloning directly into the unit. You have to use software with it. With the Nano cortex, that's one of the big selling points. It's, it's got it built in all you have to do is connect a mic and clone your amp.

Glenn, have you tried out the new tonex update? It can now run a delay and modulation along with a reverb and amp capture

I'm guessing, but A is the Headrush and B is the Nano. I couldn't really tell, even with a great headset (to eliminate room noise). I love the way this technology is going. Keep making these vids, Glen! 🤘😎

It's all perspective and preference. I bought the NanoCortex and I truly love it. Been recording with it and the tones are great. But what do I know. I wasn't an auto worker like yourself. I have been in the music biz for over 45 years. Still, I might not know shit about tone or music because I don't have 500K subs on YT.
To me, the sample I heard of the Headrush here had that weird direct harshness to the tone that I really don't like. The NC seems more organic to me. But some people like the other tone better. That's great. I just subbed to your channel after seeing your video on your wife. Sorry to hear man, I hope she has a full recovery. I don't know what I would do if that happened to my wife. She is such a superstar, I would lose it. Along with that, I subbed because I saw a fellow musician in need. Please don't make me regret it with more of these types of trash reviews. I would rather see you be factual and tell people to make their own choices, but hey, you do you. Catch you later.

Glenn, Did you try to put the flex's dsp to its limit and see basically how much is even possible to put in a rig because thats the most important thing when you have a multi fx with lots of option!!

idk which amp was the nano cortex but mix A sounded a bit clearer and more full, mix b sounded a bit pushed back in the mix/not as easy to hear what notes were being played

Once again, fantastic video Glenn. Personally, at that price point, I would go with the Line6 Pod Go. Has a lot more footswitches and a lot of amp models. It does not have a capture feature, so for those who find that important, the Headrush will be more up their alley.

I wonder Glenn one what is your take on the Mark IIC+ reissue and two would you plan on getting one for the reason of it has that Mark flavor and that paired maybe with Greenbacks, hesu demons, or even DV77.
    Cheers from the states Glenn
