I forgot to mention that the pre trilogy which is combined with the seperate 33102 pre is at an intro price of just $29.. 4 neve pre's for $29!!! noiseash.com/need-preamps/ Also here is the link to the full mixes, with & without the noiseash pre's😀 soundcloud.com/thirdy89/sets/noiseash-neve-pre-mix-examples
I think these sound great. They’re doing what I want pres to do: gently tighten things up and add just enough harmonic distortion to make sources sound fuller and more energetic without robbing them of their original character. A lot of plug-in “saturation pres” will start to collapse the perceived stereo image. What a lot of folks describe as “flat” sounding. The NEED pres don’t do that, they always sound just as alive and deep as the source, or even slightly more so. To my ears anyway. Are they console accurate? I have no idea haha. The results sound Neve-ish to me and quite good to my ears. For $29 I think it was a steal.
Now there's a man that gets the idea of this! How you see it is how I see it. I don't want it primarily as a saturation box, I have saturation plugs for that. This is a pre plugin which is made to emulate the sound of puting your signal through a choice of 3 different neve pre's. It's subtle used the way I do it but I don't want heavy distortion I want energy and a bit of slight tonal shaping and added 'mojo' with the harmonics Little goes a long way I've found
True but I find when you overly saturate or distort something and then level match it with the unprocessed it can make things sound smaller so it's all about a fine balance for me

Hell you can sign up for $9.99 a month to use thousands of riffs online so....easy as pie...anyone can do it!
@@PaulThird I know what you’re saying. And in my opinion the reason why there suddenly was a version 2, was because everyone was complaining about the price and therefor a reason enough to close the whole thread. Having said this...I think the price is easily justified by its quality. It has the quality of hardware (Acustica alike, but with a very low CPU footprint). Thank you for the informative video Paul, I always like your videos! Please note that there is a high frequency noise along the video that you might want to check. An example can be heard on 13:25, but it occurs a few times though.
Can't hear it 🤷♂️ nobody else has mentioned anything either which normally would have happened by now. Do you mean the clicking sound when switch between bypassed and unbypassed?
@@PaulThird it's not a click but more like a high note ring/whistle. Sometimes it occurs when you unbypass but not necessarily. It is very clear on the minute I mentioned.
Honestly dunno 🤷♂️ asked 3 engineers to check and thats all 3 got back to me and they all can't hear it. One even stuck it up on a spectral analyser and nothing odd showing up haha Maybe you are getting some form or interface at your end 🤷♂️
@@PaulThird Hey Paul, checked again, also with a spectral analyzer and it's definitely in the video, a whistle around 16k on the minute I said (13:25) when he says 'drop' and right after on 13:29 when he says 'face'. Preamp plugins always strike me as a bit odd... The concept kinda makes no sense, but I guess it's snazzier than "Supposed to emulate preamp saturation, but in post" as a way of marketing a plug. :P I was always under the impression that these older Neve preamps are supposedly the exact same, and that the difference lies in the EQ sections after them?
Nah not for me. I'm using less eq and more pre's now as that's really where the colour and character is in the units. That's why many engineers will simply pass audio through certain types of gear. Means you are making tonal adjustments without carving things out and painting big brush strokes with eq. If you compare all 3 of the need pre's you will find they all have their own sonic character which I like as it gives me neve but with more options 🤓
I felt the same at first. I agree it's just a "prettier" way to market saturation. Kush Audio made an emulation of a tube DI box that sounds freaking killer hahaha! Who would have ever thought I would use a plugin emulating a DI box hahaha.
@@PaulThird agreed although I would add that after having used 1073’s and bae 73 and heritage 73’s for years that the preamps sound different with the eq engaged. I prefer using mine with it engaged, I only use the HPF when they are engaged and have everything else zeroed when tracking vocals.

I can say this for a fact that this is my last neve plugin video. Unless it's hardware then that's different but I'm completely done with neve plugins. So unbelievablely done with people bringing out one neve plugin. Acustica Gold has the right idea but its cpu hit and slugginess doesn't work for me from a workflow aspect. If somebody was to release an algo version of gold and condense a channel strip with all the variations in one plugin then that'd make more sense to me in this modern day of oversaturated neve ssl and api. That's why I like the trilogy pre, I actually wish they would have added in the 33102 as well instead of a seperate pre. Would've made way more sense especially as it's included in the $29
Have you checked out the Fuse VSC-1 channel strip? It’s got 3 types of preamps and I find it to actually sound fairly analog. I would like to know your opinion on it, especially compared to the Bx, Waves, and Acoustica stuff. It’s become one of my go to strips, plus it’s light on the CPU! Great work as always Paul!
Tbh I think it came along at the worst time for me. I'm pretty bored with channel strips now so I don't tend to look at them as much now. I don't even use bx strips anymore
@@PaulThird I think it’s worth checking out. I’ve never found a channel strip I loved using until the VCS-1. It’s become my most loaded plugin since it came out. I compared it to the KIT BBN console strip and much preferred the VCS-1.
If they were to get in touch and pay for an impartial review/shootout I would check it out but my landscape has changed now so this video here is the last video I do on my channel for free unless I decide I personally want to look at the plugin. Between acustica, brainworx & United plugins I would say I actually have too many channel strips 🤣
Is the oversampling real-time or post (rendered) ? Switching the Oversampling option on/off shows no cpu changes. So, exactly what is going on with this feature? I've contacted NoiseAsh about this, no reply back from them after several attempts. ???????
Tbh I can't be arsed to check in doctor. Why dont you play a 10k sine tone, oversaturate it with the plugin and look on an analyser to see if the aliasing is reduced when utilising the oversampling. That'll tell you if the oversampling is working and if real time. If nothing is happening. Print a sweep through it and pop it in izotope rx like what I do on the channel
Just a question... which 1073 plugin would you recommend to give it a try as the closest to analog original hardware? I'm looking for one and would like to know your opinion as an expert. Thank you!
I've not tried a 1073 mic pre, just neve line amps so I can't comment. I know the UAD gets talked highly of though. If you want colour then the noiseAsh is a good shout
Some, though certainly not I, Paul, would suggest that, if it is Dundee outside your door, you would in any case be somewhat better off, by staying in the cupboard. I would vehemently disagree with those people and would even start finger-jabbing in said vehement disagreement, if I had any working fingers left after a prolonged period of living in Dundee. Great video as usual. Curious function that EQ tolerance thing, which I will explore.
It's better than it was but I wouldn't have been able to screen record an entire session with an additional 6 gold pre's. Would still crap out on me. Even with X8 oversampling the noiseAsh didn't pose a problem to me and OBS is pretty demanding on cpu when screen recording
I compared the preamp trilogy with a overloud eq84 wich has the preamp drive section and I have to say overloud beats it up. But still noiseash has amazing plug ins such as the pultec
Problem is that all the competition has just one pre option. Its having the options that makes this a good choice for me. All 3 options have their own sonic character which from a workflow aspect works a lot better for me compared to just one neve sound. The harmonic behaviour is also very different to other neve plugins so it's pretty unique and that's why i didn't bother to compare others. Very different
@@ramspencer5492 obviously not. No pkugin can be compared to harfware...thats why they are emulations. But I was saying the overloud es cheaper and same results. Despite of that noiseash has amazing olugins such as the pultec and this need collection. Dont get mad Ram. I was only giving my opinion. Peace and love
@@marsrivers I'm not mad.... And sometimes a plug-in can fool very smart, experienced people in blind tests... I also didn't say behaved exactly like. .. No worries. You know what you like.
yeaahh, i watch your videos regardless of the content ..... i just watch to hear the best accent on youtube again ... damn hell ..... 😁🤘👊 ok ... I am also a little interested in the plug in ... and by the way ... happy new year ...🥳🥸
@@PaulThird something very strange happened after seeing the video. I went to the manufacturer's site, looked what it would cost, $ 29.90, created an account, and bought it. Very strange .... 🤣
@@PaulThird with the level you are hitting that kick you should then be actually introducing aublible aliasing right? I wonder why nobody is using some sort of online / offline oversampling method (like e.g. Metaplugin)? For a hybrid setup an absolute nightmare but for those guys working a 100% ITB it's the perfect solution!
Nah I'm not introducing enough saturation or high order harmonics and the (X8) default oversampling covers nearly all audible aliasing. The aliasing example I showed later in the video was the PRE at -30db and you see how much it cuts off the aliasing. I'm only driving the kick pre at -18/19db in that instance Lucky if the kick is producing anything over 10-12k
Had the auto-subtitles on by default. RUclips thought you were reviewing plugins from Noise Ass. However, I think noise ass doesn't sound as musical. (Actually it is doing the same one note brass song over and over)
As someone who's been using actual Neve 1073's and a 33609 for over 20 years, nothing has come close to the Acoustica Audio Neve emulation...I think AA used some sort of black magic for their plugins :)
When I compared the navy 33609 to the hardware I found it was the farthest away from the competition. The compressors are different from eq's though as they are more than just convolution and collecting impulse responses of the frequency response and harmonics You have to critically listen and match compression envelopes as well as many other things. I find acustica eq's and pre's to be very good on the most part but I find their compressors to be very hit and miss.
@@PaulThird I'll concede the compressors that AA puts out seem a bit finicky to get right, especially the Cola. The thing that blows me away is their basic hardware emulation - the sound of all the tansistors, and tubes, and such. They're transformative on instruments and mix busses.
@@PaulThird yes… mixing this coffee, sugar, milk and hot water… coffee mate also to glue it together… then it’s ready to see you through the walk… many like a good mix to make a walk more enjoyable
Love your channel by the way… the more critical honesty autism brings to get down to the truths… the craps looking a lot more crap, but the goods you know are most likely goods
Yup. Just a static neve console plug. Saturation is quite nice but nothing better than the rest. It's actually really limited compared to the competitors
@@NicStride well, I hate those kinds of eqs. The IK ones don't compress, they do alias, they do cramp. I have used them to distort a signal now and again. Love IK, but their Neve EQs are probably among the worst out there. That doesn't mean you can't do a good mix with them, especially if you use oversampling - but there are better options.
Nothing special. I know that you are a big fan of higher frequencies and NopiseAsh has a plenty of them in every plugin. Actually, a preamp plugin gives you a very little impact on sound and you have to buy a ton of them in order to find the right one for a special purpose. The EQ is not bad, but not as good as (for instance) AMEK from PA by far.
Well not really the trilogy pre. The 1084 and 1081 roll off the highs. In the end you are getting 4 neve pre's for $29. Can't argue with that in my book 🤷♂️ And the high frequency thing in my mixing was like 8 months ago lol I now mix with more pre's than eq's as that's the actual character of the unit. That's where your harmonics and vibe lie and that's why i like the trilogy pre. 3 tonal options in one plugin with added harmonics. If you go between the 3 you'll hear the difference between them which when working quick can be a benefit especially if you quickly want to try out a neve sound on a source
@@PaulThird ...and the second thing is: In the meantime I become used to plugins with gain compensation. If AnalogObsession (which is Patreon based) can do that, I would expect it from each manufacturer. I hate plugins without gain compensation ^^
I tried it out when I did the gem bundle video and didn't like it much being honest. Can't remember exactly why but I remember not liking it over whatever I compared it to
@@PaulThird I also don't like Overloud stuff very much. Well, actually, the Voice Gem is not bad but nothing special and pretty expensive. To be honest, I got used to Waves prices - I don't spend more than 29,- EUR on a plugin. The only thing I bought for more than 29,- was Izotope bundle für 69,- and one Acustica bundle for 49,-. I would also try the free valve plugin from Hornet and the Analog Series from Nomad Factory and, of course, the SGA1566 by shattered glass audio, which is free and the best in my eyes.
I forgot to mention that the pre trilogy which is combined with the seperate 33102 pre is at an intro price of just $29.. 4 neve pre's for $29!!!

Agreed Hunter, I love the VCS-1, and I’ve never really loved any other channel strip before.
That intro was great. 😂
As you can see I'm starting to get a bit bored 🤣
@@PaulThird I like it! Your boredom is our entertainment.
I moved out of Dundee and it was a conscious decision 🤣 however only 15 mins away and work in Dundee 5 days a week so no escaping it haha
@@PaulThird
Ye cannie polish a Third 🤣!
You can't try 🤣
Wondering what pre-processing was applied to that vocal? Sounds quite smeared already.
1176 going into sta level. Some clean up eq. In the final mix I went back to the premix and made it cleaner by replacing 76 for smart comp
@@PaulThird Ok, I was wondering! A bit of smear is what I expect from a Neve in the first place.
Do we really need another neve emulation??
Definitely not now anyway. That's my last
I like the song, I like what the pres did, especially to the bass. What's the name of this track?
Think the artist is James May.. Songs called hold on I think. Just another free multitrack
@@PaulThird thanks!
Snow wins for me! Acustica snow use pre + circuit + texture in master buss!
🤓🤓
I only wich Noise ash made a compressor🤔
Never know. Might do one day 🤓
Hey Paul, how do these preamps compare to acustica's gold/navy or some N4 pres? Thanks
Didn't shoot them out tbh. I don't use gold. Never gravitated towards it especially due to the CPU hit and fade outs when switching pre's and stuff
It's better than it was but I wouldn't have been able to screen record an entire session with an additional 6 gold pre's. Would still crap out on me. Even with X8 oversampling the noiseAsh didn't pose a problem to me and OBS is pretty demanding on cpu when screen recording
Obs
I compared the preamp trilogy with a overloud eq84 wich has the preamp drive section and I have to say overloud beats it up. But still noiseash has amazing plug ins such as the pultec
Problem is that all the competition has just one pre option.
Its having the options that makes this a good choice for me.
All 3 options have their own sonic character which from a workflow aspect works a lot better for me compared to just one neve sound.
The harmonic behaviour is also very different to other neve plugins so it's pretty unique and that's why i didn't bother to compare others.
Very different
Beats it up in behaving like real Neve hardware? I don't think so. Use what sounds good to you though.. .
I just tried the Channeleve by analog obsession. I must admit i´s gorgeous.
yeaahh, i watch your videos regardless of the content ..... i just watch to hear the best accent on youtube again ... damn hell ..... 😁🤘👊
ok ... I am also a little interested in the plug in ...
and by the way ... happy new year ...🥳🥸
🤓🤓
@@PaulThird something very strange happened after seeing the video. I went to the manufacturer's site, looked what it would cost, $ 29.90, created an account, and bought it. Very strange .... 🤣
Really can't argue with that price 👌
@@PaulThird Yes absolutely. Can not complain.
Actually, you are now entitled to a commission from the manufacturer .... 🤔😁🤘
I wish haha
Hey Paul HNY! At what sample rate are you working on?
48khz 🤓
@@PaulThird with the level you are hitting that kick you should then be actually introducing aublible aliasing right? I wonder why nobody is using some sort of online / offline oversampling method (like e.g. Metaplugin)? For a hybrid setup an absolute nightmare but for those guys working a 100% ITB it's the perfect solution!
Nah I'm not introducing enough saturation or high order harmonics and the (X8) default oversampling covers nearly all audible aliasing. The aliasing example I showed later in the video was the PRE at -30db and you see how much it cuts off the aliasing. I'm only driving the kick pre at -18/19db in that instance
Lucky if the kick is producing anything over 10-12k
Had the auto-subtitles on by default. RUclips thought you were reviewing plugins from Noise Ass.
However, I think noise ass doesn't sound as musical. (Actually it is doing the same one note brass song over and over)
Sounds like a really ropey dodgy nightclub 🤣
I need to hear these vs Acustica Gold pres
I thought about it but the CPU in noiseash is way better
You can't use AA multiple times on 24 tracks. They are very heavy on CPU.
What is the link to these Plug ins . The ones that you list don't work ?
noiseash.com/need-preamps/
As someone who's been using actual Neve 1073's and a 33609 for over 20 years, nothing has come close to the Acoustica Audio Neve emulation...I think AA used some sort of black magic for their plugins :)
The magic is called convolution lol. They don't use algorithms like most companies. That's why the CPU usage is so high. :D
When I compared the navy 33609 to the hardware I found it was the farthest away from the competition.
The compressors are different from eq's though as they are more than just convolution and collecting impulse responses of the frequency response and harmonics
You have to critically listen and match compression envelopes as well as many other things.
@@TheJohnsofDoes thanks for the info!
I'll always have acustica & timP in my mixes. I find just the Acustica pre's are enough for me half the time, especially on busses
You've done yet nut brother.. Love it. 😂👍

Remember to check out my autism channel if you want to learn more about my life 🤓🤓
These are really rather good. I have a Neve clone pre and am familiar with the general family of sound.
🤓🤓
pres sound awsome my dude, subtle but enuf tone shaping going on to make a difference.. $29 ehhhhhhhh .. DONT DO THIS TO ME MY DUDE!!
Sorry 😅😅
I’ve been kidnapped in my own room by myself also… nothing I can do before I need to leave for work in 38 minutes
38 minutes.. Still enough time for some extra mixing 🤣
Kit BB 105 V2 >
Not for me 🤓
So you’ve tried the v2? I know the v1 was underwhelming.
Yup. Just a static neve console plug. Saturation is quite nice but nothing better than the rest. It's actually really limited compared to the competitors
Have you tried the IK ones?
@@NicStride well, I hate those kinds of eqs. The IK ones don't compress, they do alias, they do cramp. I have used them to distort a signal now and again. Love IK, but their Neve EQs are probably among the worst out there. That doesn't mean you can't do a good mix with them, especially if you use oversampling - but there are better options.
Yoooooooooo
🤓🤓
I wonder how long it will take until they are beeing sued by brainworx :D
Noiseash have a partnership with PA so I can't see there being any issue. PA sell noiseash stuff via their pop up shop
Why would they be sued😂
Almost neglibile sonic difference
Each to their own I suppose
Nothing special. I know that you are a big fan of higher frequencies and NopiseAsh has a plenty of them in every plugin. Actually, a preamp plugin gives you a very little impact on sound and you have to buy a ton of them in order to find the right one for a special purpose. The EQ is not bad, but not as good as (for instance) AMEK from PA by far.
Well not really the trilogy pre. The 1084 and 1081 roll off the highs.
In the end you are getting 4 neve pre's for $29. Can't argue with that in my book 🤷♂️
And the high frequency thing in my mixing was like 8 months ago lol
I now mix with more pre's than eq's as that's the actual character of the unit.
Paul, try the overloud eq84. Just do the things that you are describing
😂
