Not sure how the shift linkage works on the 914-6, but my Lotus Europa also has a long mechanical linkage from the shift lever to the transmission as it too is mid-engined. It was VERY loose when I bought the car, but replacing a bushing, U joint and two washers at the lever tang really helped a lot. I would not be surprised if the linkage on the Porsche could also benefit from this kind of repair.
STILL a sharp car! Doesn't scream "LOOK AT ME!" I'd even take the 4-cylinder one, as it's just a fun car. Too bad we don't have those, TR-#s, and the like. Today, about the closest you're going to get is the Miata.

If i remember correctly the 914 with the vw engine list price was just under $4000.One great deal that was.

I traded my 911 in on one of these - not as sexy looking but superior in every other way.
