@@gregrodriguez714 Cuba was not on par with any first would country, that's just basic history that even hard right historians recognize. Cuba had an extremely severe dictatorship (much more violent than anything the revolution has mutated into over the years), it had racist elites, segregation, non-white people even had severely limited freedoms even freedom of movement in addition to experiencing religious persecution to a degree, women didn't have the right to vote, there was basically no healthcare for the working class even less infrastructure than there is now (if you can believe it, lol) and they had enormously high illiteracy rates. Their governments were regularly dictated from Washington which made them nothing more than a puppet state. Cubans have effectively never experienced democracy. Even the most biased historians don't negate this. Baku features some remarkable architecture by some of the world's best architects, but that don't make Azerbaijan a thriving first world country. I agree with you that it's nice to fantasize that Cuba was once an advanced place because there are pretty buildings everywhere in Havana, but being a brothel for fat Americans, exploiting people of color and giving a safe haven for US mobsters isn't exactly what I think of when I think of a first world country. The "thriving economy" you talk about was exactly what US economy is now, only worse: it's thriving for the few wealthy families but everyone else lives in terrible conditions. Cuba was the West Virginia of its day, only replace coal with sugar cane and sprinkle some tourism in there for good measure. There are many reasons why Cuban economy declined so heavily, mainly because of its dependence on exporting sugar to the US and then subsequent changes in the sugar market that US and other developed countries set in motion in the '60, then because of the embargo which practically makes any effort to build a modern economy impossible (both then and now) and then of course the corruption which remained a constant from before the revolution until today. If you look at the impact of US sanctions on other countries, you'll see that, for example, some former Yugoslav Republics like Serbia are not yet back to the pre-embargo living standards and their embargo lasted only a few years, not 70, like the Cuban embargo. So, while it's really nice to fantasize that one family messed up heaven that Cuba was before 1959, that's a fantasy only someone who likes fairy tales can believe. The Cuban government mismanages the economy and things could marginally improve should they be less corrupt, but there is absolutely no way to build a solid economy if you can't import and export things, so Cuba simply cannot have a good economy until United States decides that the embargo can go away, which isn't going to happen any time soon even if they decide to switch back to free market economy tomorrow, because United States doesn't want Cuba to thrive it only has interest in controlling Cuba and that's about it. Of course, they cannot switch to capitalism and even Raul's reforms that allowed some market economy were only fostering inequality because when a corrupt agency collects taxes they ain't going back to the people. Cuba can do something to connect more to Brazil now that Lula will be back in office and with Argentina, but those are not the major kicks its economy needs. They can ease up on media censorship and get some money from the EU but that is like putting a band aid to fix a gaping bullet wound. AS long as embargo is in place Cuba cannot develop. And the idea that it was developed before is maybe something your grandparents told you. What they didn't tell you is how much they didn't pay or care for their workers.
