The real problem of the video is that for some champions you chose "worst" as "broken" ability, while for others "worst" as "filler or underwhelming". It produces really weird results like LeBlanc being there because W is too broken while Wukong being there because passive is too simple.

Agree. Vars needed to decide on which definition of "worst" he was going for in this video, because as is, the results are all over the place. The criteria ranges from "too broken/useless or underwhelming/thematically inconsistent/boring" depending on the champ.

Rammus one trick checking in before the video’s release:
Imo it has to be his R. His basic abilities are all necessary, R only serves as engage or disengage, both of which can be substituted by Q or flash. The damage is negligible and knock up is tough to hit multiple opponents, at which point E is better as CC. Rammus worked without it before the rework, and it’s still not as important as the other abilities. There’s a reason why we level it up at 6, 17, and 18.

I know this isn't an unbiased video, but I feel like sometimes just choosing the "unfair" ability is a little too easy. Like Cassiopeia's W is frustrating because not that many champs have grounding, but without it she couldn't be a complete champion. It's only really game breaking against mobile melee champions, and even then it's pretty hard to use. Against a mage with skill shots or an ADC with significant AA dps, the ground holds them in place but doesn't stop their damage output, so landing it can help you secure the kill when you have advantage or help you escape when you're in disadvantage, but it doesn't flip the script, which is what I would personally call "broken". But that's just my two cents :)

She also has the ability to give a solo Ivern some level of threat with her being targeted with his E to be a aoe slow and damage nuke. Passive is gold cheat, Q is reliable damage, W provide the needed damage and works well when being chase, E is one of the best basic ability
      his R execute just sucks
you have to be really fed to be able to do Q R one shot, like if you give the gold needed to make it happen to Zed, he can probably just R auto E to kill you, it's so bad
and once you reached late game you kill people by E>W>Q, you don't even need R
R on tanks is useless and squishy died before needing ult
The defining characteristic of his ult, the execute is completely redundant. R maxes damage out at 33.3%, if you deal 66.67% damage with just Q+W, why would he need double damage for his R? the target will still died even without this bonus damage
Other R execute champs like evelynn gets away with it because they have utility
Other champs have good execute because it isn't on their fucking ultimate

@@opportunity3278 So I'm not saying I agree with all his takes, however I do think his logic is mostly consistent. "Too good" really means too much of a champions power budget exists in this ability. For instance Pyke R. Having a Champions kit revolve around a single ability is really unfun to play against. I actually like Kindred's R, but if you watch a lot of Var's videos, he has pretty strong convictions about characters abiding by their class archetypes which Kindred R obviously does not. Again I don't agree with that take of his, but I wasn't surprised at all to see that.

Apologies for the wall of text but, as a WW main: easily his W. Yes it's his iconic 'hunt you down' ability but it's an over glorified passive. You lose the bonus movement speed if the champion is hiding behind another person, hit by even a stray minion auto or in combat and is buggy half the time your run on it. Yes the attack steroid is great but these could have been his passives. Nerf the values, make it scale per level and give him an actual W. Even the active portion of the W could just be like kindred where you select a champion that's revealed and in range. Due to this, his power budget is shafted to his Q which is his only damaging ability apart from his ult.
Looking at it from process of elimination, his W is still the worse. His Q is overtuned (again only damaging base ability) dealing pretty good scaling damage, max health AND healing him. On top of that, it can allow warwick to follow dashing champions by just holding the ability (also useful for dodging skill shots). Primal Howl is an also an amazing ability for a diver, giving him straight damage reduction that also has hard cc at the end of the duration or recast. As for his ult: it a long range gap closer that suppresses someone, damages them and heals him. Yes its hard to hit, but that's because riot made his hitbox the size of a yordle (not joking look this up). As a result, W is defacto the worse: a janky, conditional MS steroid that has an absurd cooldown and an attack speed steroid that, while pretty good, could have just been a passive.
    (edit: grammar)
(Edit 2: didn’t know that passives were included. Doesn’t change the fact that W is worse. Passive is on hit damage that synergies with W and heals him for damage dealt, increasing if he’s low on health. Perfect for what he wants to do.)

I'm not saying that these aren't necessarily bad in the context of their kit, but for all of these you just listed 'this ability is uninteractive or annoying or broken' as the reason, unlike the rest of the champions which you gave a reason for them not fitting.

I had a random concept idea for how Xerath's passive could be changed a long time ago. I thought it would be cool if he could regenerate mana by forming into his sarcophagus shape and channeling, becoming immobile and incapable of using abilities, but if he finishes the channel without taking champion damage it gives him a chunk of his mana back. Make it have a long cooldown or not give much mana early game but scale its power up later to have a low cooldown or give more mana lategame. Think it might give enemies more clearcut windows of vulnerability to engage on him or his team since he would have to stand still and finish the entire channel to actually get the benefit.

    • @pohja4552

    • @thenumber24
      @thenumber24 Год назад

Mana surge is good in early game due to his large mana cost and the need to poke alot. And if your passive would've been implemented, it probably would've been useless at any point of the game. In early game you can't regen alot of mana making your pokes scarce. And in the late game, where your passive supposedly would've been useful, Xerath would've finished his luden's, or liandry's, both of them giving alot of mana.
This passive is a bad idea. It's bad on every stage of the game, when theres a big fight happening and it doesn't end in 20 seconds, and you lose mana, you're much better auto attacking atleast so you can use your Q once or twice. But when you turn into the sarcophagus, you're leaving your team at a large disadvantage because the fight turns into a 4v5. It's better to stay in the fight and auto attack to get your Q faster, than to leave your team for a long time so you can use more of your abilities later

Every other comment already said it, but there were two champions that were in close succession to each other that I had to point out. Shaco's worst ability from a design standpoint is his E. It's point-n-click single target damage that slows. It's lazy. The rest of his kit makes sense from a lore standpoint, which means it also makes sense from an identity standpoint. Shaco's a trickster clown, so he gets jack-in-the-boxes, he backstabs you, he clones himself, and can vanish in a puff of smoke. It's all annoying, but at least it all adds to the champion. His E is just a filler tool to help him trade.
The other champion is Singed. His Q is easily his best designed ability. The rest of his kit is ass. His passive is there to reinforce the fact that he's hard to chase, but that doesn't help his gameplay, it just pays homage to a gameplay meme (never chase Singed). It doesn't add anything to how you play him, you're barely going to notice it. You get a movement speed buff when you've already reached your enemy, or as you pass a teammate. You aren't going to be passing your backline, so you really only trigger this between 0 and 2 times, depending on how many OTHER tanks your team has for you to stand next to. Triggering the speed as you reach an enemy only helps if your plan is to bypass the enemy frontline for their backline, but even then, the speed boost is negligible. As for his W, he literally spills a giant blot of glue on the ground to slow you. For a mad scientist who dabbles in chemical warfare, GLUE cannot be among his repertoire of threatening concoctions, that's just pathetic. His E is him literally just throwing you so that it can synergize with the lazy ass ability that is his W. His ult, thematically is great, he drinks a cocktail brew of steroids he made himself, and gains a ton of stats. Unfortunately, stat steroid abilities are just the epitome of laziness. His ult and Q are fine, but the rest of his kit needs a hard looking at. For a chemist, he needs more than just "gas leak" and "steroid injection". He could have a Twisted Fate "Pick a Card" style ability where he cycles through some drugs to throw at you, or have that ability be him selecting a drug to drink. His E could be him taking an adrenaline shot, causing SInged to do a short dash into a wall, where he takes recoil damage, and stuns people around him. His passive just needs to be something fucked up, like a drug tolerance, so his abilities won't cost him any health (adverse effects of taking weird drugs) on a cooldown.

As soon as he put the "no bad ability" tier i knew he was gonna contradict himself

Urgot's ult synergizes with his kit really well and reducing it down to "Skillshot execute" is reductive. You use it at range extremely rarely, and it's at its strongest when you're in the middle of the teamfight fight which suits where he wants to be, with its AOE fear making it an amazing teamfighting ability, while you need to stay alive during the pull in the middle of the enemy team. And it's also a slow since urgot's biggest struggle is his mobility, half the time an urgot IS actually using it at range, it's not for the execute, it's just for the slow to hit E. And the ult is mainly used after you hit E so the slow also lets you rotate around someone to get his shotgun knees off.
If you replace urgot's ult with anything else, urgot becomes a far less interesting champion even if you replace it with something stronger.
It's also the ability most in tune with his lore because it's the aspect of his kit that draws on urgot deifying survival. Someone has to survive those 4 seconds to pass his test and prove they can survive. The "Impressive" Voiceline alone when someone survives does so much for his personality.
It's the perfect ability, mixing in risk and reward to make a multi-tool of an ult to compliment his kit which people only recognize as "Oh, 30% execute. Yawn." Despite there being plenty of other ults that while they may not be executes can do over 30% of your HP quicker and usually more point and click.
I'll defend urgot's ult anyday. It takes skill to use it to full effect and you'll see a massive difference in how a bad urgot uses it compared to a good one. Compared to an actually badly designed ult like a Garen ult. Which is just a point and click remove HP.

The entire purpose in urgot's kit is to slightly slow someone so you can get close enough for E.
And sure it's nice to have, it just doesn't work if anyone you're fighting has any mobility or common sense at all. A slight slow and running at someone makes you predictable. It just opens you up to outplays or dodging your E. You're never really advised to go for using it to run someone down unless you're already ahead. For any slightly even matchup, you want to use flash to hit your E to give as little time to react as possible because if you miss it you die.

As for the lack of understanding on why it resets for every champion, and that shes unfair to other wave ultimates, it all comes down to her thematic. She's 'charming' and gaining stans, that sorta fanbase & music and such is infectous and grows rapidly which is why the continued length makes so much sense. Where as for Renata & Nami (the only other wave ults) nothing of similar notion applies to them (although as a nami main i think it should be longer or faster in river personally to help her out in jungle fights & add a dynamic to her enchanter gameplay but im biased). Forcing him to use his E alot makes him have to play much more scared and passively. He is meant to be able to stick around and apply pressure as a tank. Tanks need some sort of map presence sticking power. Because tanks are usually not the most damaging or the hardest shoving. Infact they are meant to take damage. Making him use a big shield means he doesn't get it back with healing. And the only use he has once that's gone is poking with Q or trying to save someone with his ult.
This same kind of logic applies with Ornn. He is the only tank in the game that has no sustain, shield ,or a damage resist of some kind in his kit. And that's okay. he gains that through his passive.
Being able to keep up pressure by flexibly building what he needs to be relevant. It is a fantastic way of breaking a rule, you break the rule and give him something powerful but take away something fundamental.
And it mixes up people's usual perception of tanks, most of the time when you are a tank people always pull the "you're a tank you don't need farm" but if you actively take EXP away from Ornn... you take away the late game power of Ornn. While I agree the free stats might be a bit... much. I often don't think they are broken? Stats don't mean much late game if the players don't utilize them well.
Ornn is a knowledge reliant champion. But that whole part of his playstyle goes out the window without passive. And he becomes a somewhat skill expressive CC bot without it.
Anyway great video I like quick thought dumps like this. Makes some interesting conversation and thoughts.
If you read this Thank you And I hope you have a great day.

Disagree on Cassio' W being broken, since now a new champion having either dashes, blinks, movements buffs and so on seems to be the norm; and cassio not having any form of quick movement outside of her passive... feels like a fair ability to me. Predictions for the champs I play and can be bothered with:
Shyvana's is Q - her E takes too much of her power budget to be here, and her W gives her much-needed sticking power with its MS. The R is her only form of a dash, and while its unstoppable doesn't actually work, it's still needed.
Thresh - R. CC-wise, it's Veigar cage but worse, and only in super long games do you get enough souls for it to be worth it damage-wise
Taric - E I guess? All his abilities are pretty good, the Q is insane healing and passive spam, the W is what lets his kit work, and his R can make or break entire games
Rell - Q. Negligible damage and healing, only really useful for applying a passive proc at longer range.
Nasus - R, as everything else is kinda needed - Q is Q, W is his only real way of avoiding being dived, and is then a great chasing tool later, and E is how he farms before he can risk walking up to the wave
Swain - W - the only time you're hitting this on someone with a brain is when you've hit them with E anyway, since without boots you can walk across its diameter before it goes off anyway.
Morgana - R. I'll be honest, half the time I forget I even have this ability. It's not got the chain cc from her Q, it's not got the AOE burn spam application of her W, and it has nowhere near the same utility of being able to completely prevent AD champions from cc'ing you or an ally, while gutting any AP engage.
Edit: yeah I didn't consider passive to be an option, that's on me

I gotta go through champs I play for this lol. Ranging from ones I main to ones I've used enough to give an opinion on and are worth discussing.
Azir - passive maybe?? all of his main abilities are very useful and are made better by their synergy. At least with passive I can imagine playing him without having. his passive is also strong, but it has a long cooldown and basically doesn't exist until the mid-late game. When it is used, it requires your teammates to play around it if you want to get its maximum effect. Besides that, it can be used for sieging and pushing mid-lane, but it's not the best split pushing tool ever because side lanes are so long and you're using Azir's passive to protect yourself over trying to use it offensively in a teamfight. Also active passives are a bit awkward to use because I sometimes just accidentally activate it. You also can't use his passive in the jungle to fight over objectives, which is where something like it would hypothetically be the most broken. That said, his passive can still be a game changer in the right circumstances, it's just the most conditional part of his kit.
Thresh - passive. Thresh wants to roam but his passive says that if he wants to be tanky, he needs to stay in lane. In order to collect souls safely, you might have to use lantern, but it's not usually worth using a powerful ability to permanently gain one stack. There are some off-meta Thresh builds designed completely around his passive, but as a roaming support, Thresh's passive is more of a drawback than a benefactor. Besides that, he's such a powerful and versatile champion due to how many applications his basic abilities have that he kinda needs to have a passive that holds him back. Like, his hook is arguably the strongest hook in the game, really only having direct competition with Blitzcrank, because landing his hook can be used for so many different scenarios due to it also being a 1.5 second stun and having a recast. His lantern can give any ally a dash. Abilities that give your allies more options are extremely powerful because it can circumvent champion weaknesses. Like, Thresh + Vanguard is super strong because his engage is difficult to land and his lantern gives Vanguards a free escape option while having a slightly less tanky but still very tanky frontliner to cover for them. His E is good for both engage, disengage, and combos, and his ult is very good for controlling space and it does a deceptively high amount of damage in exchange for requiring the enemy to either walk into it for no reason or comboing someone into the wall.
Kalista - arguable whether it's q or w. The problem with Q is that it's two main purposes are jungle mobility, in-lane poke, and gap closing. It's not very good poke and adcs aren't exactly going to be spending years in the jungle. The gap closing is very minor, covering less distance than flash, but it's still useful in scenarios. It's just that Kalista has arguably both the strongest passive and ult in the game, especially for an adc, and her E is also a really strong execute due to being able to execute multiple people at once and resetting on killing anything, including minions, which makes it double as a good waveclear option, it also off-sets the one weakness of her passive. Then there is her W, which is sort of just thrown in there for fun. It still gives her %max health magic damage if her support is attacking the same target as her, which is worth mentioning. It also functions as a slightly clunkier version of Ashe's vision arrow, allowing Kalista to scout for the enemy jungler without putting herself at risk, and vision control is generally quite good, but it definitely doesn't give Kalista major combat pressure. The reason I said Kalista's ult is arguably the strongest in the game is that it's capable of breaking certain champions. I'm specifically talking about Rell, a very fair vanguard who's designed around having extremely strong engage with somewhat limitted range and duration, but she's primarily balanced around the fact that she has no disengage and can only go in once. So giving Rell what is effectively a Malphite Ult with upwards of two seconds of knock-up attached to upwards of 5 seconds of untargetability and enough range to cover almost a quarter of the map if the ult were to be cast and recast both from max range. That does just break the champion's balance. Her passive is arguably the strongest in the game because it means that as long as Kalista is in range to auto-attack something, she will have up to 2.5 dashes per second (barring Lethal Tempo). E just synergizes really well with her passive on top of being an individually strong execute. Between Q and W, I'd hesitantly give it to W because its combat pressure is really minor due to having a cooldown on its effect and Kalista otherwise being designed around backloaded damage and the benefits of her W's vision probably being less effective than just.. having another combat ability that works well with her kit. Her Q lets her access her passive without needing to auto attack, even if it's on a cooldown and there are niche outplays where Q > E can instantly kill two people while W doesn't have that effect. It's mostly that I'm valuing Q's somewhat niche combat pressure and neutral over W's vision control and sustain. I think Kalista would still be powerful if either ability was taken, but I think she'd feel the loss of Q stronger than W.
Janna - Passive. It's not that it's bad, but it's such a minor effect that can only really be used to make disengage slightly more effective. I feel like even without her passive, Janna would still have incredibly powerful disengage. I'm picking it because it's not very flashy and I've never really had a moment where I was like "oh shit, Janna's passive saved my ass."
Vel'koz - all of his abilities are good for different reasons, it's hard to pick. I'd go with maybe e...? Q is extremely powerful and long range, can't remove that, passive is true damage, w is good for both wave clear and stacking his passive, ult is instant cast steerable skillshot that does a crap ton of damage and stacks his passive quickly. Meanwhile, I still think his E is really strong. It's a good way to set up his combos, provide disengage, and knock-ups are the strongest non-displacement CC due to being functionally a stun that is unaffected by tenacity. That said, Velk's E is pretty low range considering the rest of his kit and it's difficult to land, so it's mostly a disengage tool that can occasionally be used to combo his W into and it can function as good follow-up CC for the rest of the team. The ability also is nice for waveclear due to being an AoE that applies his passive. It's not weak and it's still a big part of Velk's damage rotation, but it's still Velk's least reliable ability and his lowest range one.
Neeko - she's funny in this discussion because I'm pretty sure Neeko mains tend to either think her passive is the most broken shit in the game or completely useless. Basically, you can pretend to be any champion in the game but the illusion breaks if you take any damage or use any ability. Neeko will inherent that champion's base MS and auto range (unless their auto range is longer than Neeko's). The passive also hides her ult and can be used with her W. The problem with her passive is that it's an active ability that's infinite value, but using that ability to its maximum value isn't possible because the enemy team knows that there's a Neeko running about. It's sort of the Zoroark problem, where Zoroark's gimmick is to trick the opponent into using moves that it's immune to or resists so that it has enough time to set up and sweep. The problem is that it's unreliable at best when used optimally because the opponent is going to know that every Pokemon you send out has a chance of being Zoroark because of team preview, which makes setting up Zoroark's ideal conditions basically impossible. I imagine that using Neeko's passive to its maximum effect would require you to have good macro, vision control, teammates that don't cast a lot of abilities and instead just run at you and auto attack, and a good sense of what's up in your enemies heads, and good team coordination. Which may make her sound like a pro-play champion, but she isn't because of the Zoroark dilemma. As a result, Neeko's passive is an infinite value ability where odds are stacked against her getting anything out of it. Improving at the ability is also difficult because it's hard to tell whether the opponent was fooled or just stupid. Personally, I think redesigning the ability to be somehow closer to the spy from TF2 would be potentially better, but I have no idea how Neeko would be able to do that considering fog of war and.. vision. Maybe an ability where she can swap places with someone and disguise herself as them alongside an ability that looks like that but she doesn't swap places? Idk. Second worst ability is Q, which feels like Seraphine Q but with less range and a smaller hitbox.
(Bonus) Yuumi - W. Going untargettable is for cowards. A useless ability with no benefit. If you play Yuumi, don't use W. Become Jungle Cat. The Forest Calls To You. Jungle Cat. Become the Warrior Cat Yuumi was always meant to be.

A few more, tho these aren't champs I play as much (or I don't play them but I have friends who frequently do, so I've played with them a lot). I'm sort of imagining this as a gamemode where the player has to pick one ability to be removed from the champion but otherwise everything else remains the same.
Rell - Q, it's biggest point is to destroy shields which can be really useful against champs like Sett, but overall, it does less damage than her auto attacks and heals, like, 20 HP. It is quite useless outside of specific match-ups.
Teemo - Passive, it's awkward to use and is only really effective within fog of war, but if your enemy predicts it, you have just wasted a bunch of time for no reason. The benefits are also not particularly insane. It's an AS buff.
Zillean - Passive, it doesn't activate that often, doesn't synergize with his kit, and functionally doesn't exist late-game. It can still be a huge boost early-game due to getting people to their level 6 faster.
Shaco - E maybe? His passive isn't very useful on paper, but his kit is designed around it and it makes running away from him challenging. His Q, W, and Ult are all very powerful abilities, while his E is just point and click damage. Ranged damage and an execute, so not useless, but it's got less applications than the rest of his kit.
Samira - passive, imagine if Samira didn't have to build up style to use her ult lol. I was gonna say Q because it's a neutral ability and a skillshot required to build up her passive to use ult, but then I realized "wait, what if she just didn't have to build up her passive to use ult?" Like, Samira's passive is definitely one of those abilities that exists to give the champion a drawback to properly balance her.
Zoe - W, it's not part of her normal burst combo unless she gets certain powers determined by RNG. The reposition can be nice and it prevents enemies from flashing away from her, but the ability would be way stronger on a skirmisher than a burst mage.
Senna - E, it's not necessarily useless, but the MS scales solely AP and isn't super significant. It also provides minimal combat pressure due to the long start-up time. For an ability that spreads some category of stealth to her teammates, it's surprisingly weak.
Taric - Q. His Q has a long cooldown, takes up a bunch of mana, and does very little healing unless fully stacked. You can't get high stacks on it until you're high enough level, so it's a weak lane sustain tool. Stacking Q faster requires you to auto attack enemy champions, but you are a melee champion with no gap closers in a lane that typically fields one to two ranged opponents, so the juggernaut method of walk up and smack them really doesn't work here. The closest thing you have to compensation is a small AoE delayed straight-line skill-shot, which is also outranged by your average lane opponent. In a teamfight, Taric gets exploded too quickly to stack and effectively use his Q if he takes the smack approach. Compared to every other heal ability in the game, Taric definitely has the hardest one to use. Taric's W would be here for being a pathetically small shield due to being %max health with the problem being that his target demographic, the marksman, has a small HP pool, but it's also a tether ability that spreads the range of his Q, E, and Ult, so it's still valuable. He's definitely a champion balanced around having one absurd ability tho. So the rest of his kit is low impact while his entire kit is just difficult to use effectively.
Braum - I'd elect his W maybe. It's a good reposition tool and provides buffs to defenses, but he's a case where his entire kit is very powerful so something has to be last. Passive is really good for supporting allies with sustained or backloaded damage. Braum/Ashe is particularly mean because of Braum's passive combined with Ashe's slows. It can still be good for some frontloaded damage characters if they're characters who run stuff like Hail of Blades. Q lets him apply his passive without having to get into melee range. E is a mobile Yasuo Windwall, which is extremely valuable in a lane that will always have at least one ranged attacker, and his ult is his only real engage tool, which can also be used for disengage if needed. His ult is also extremely good in teamfights. So W is in last place because Braum isn't a major beneficiary of mobility and his E provides similar stat buffs while (ideally) blocking your ally from any damage. His W is still extremely useful tho. It's just I think Braum would have the best chance to survive without it.
Bard - E. All of Bard's abilities are good. The reason why I listed E as his weakest is because even though it effectively gives every champion a dash and jungle mobility, it's heavily telegraphed and as an infinite value ability, can be misused. That said, worth mentioning that his ult is capable of single-handedly losing games when used badly enough, but his ult also can single-handedly win games, so it evens out. Kinda. His Q is worth mentioning due to being a conditional CC ability and a low-range skillshot, which makes it less reliable than most other straight-line skillshots, but it's a good source of damage and stun's are pretty valuable CC. The reason W isn't here instead of E is that his W gives Bard lane presence even when he's off roaming. Basically, his W is a decent source of sustain and disengage while he's fucking off in the jungle. It can be fucked up by teammates just refusing to play around it or reacting to your W in the worst ways humanly possible, but it's a powerful ability regardless. I might be undervaluing his E, but the way I see it, his Q and W exist to enable his roams while his E is a strong ability to supplement them (and his ult can win games so throwing it in the garbage would be a big no). His passive also is needed to enable his playstyle and give him the scaling he needs to keep up with his fellow supports.
Sona - Ult. Sona's ult is her best play-making ability, but her kit is designed more around her buffing her allies than playmaking. There are also just better sources of stuns than her ult and it just isn't the reason someone would choose to pick up this champion. As far as direct power goes, Q is a really good laning tool. Without it, Sona would basically be dead weight during the laning phase, which is unacceptable for a support. Her W is a team-wide heal that also gives her empowered auto the ability to weaken enemy autos, which is good for skirmishes, trades involving the adcs, or all-ins. Her E's MS buff and empowered auto slowing is good for both disengage and chasing enemies. While her ult can cover stuff that her E covers, I'll point out that all of her basic abilities contribute to her passive and that basic abilities are going to be available more often than ults. Really the main reason I picked her ult was because her ult just isn't the reason anyone plays her.
Tristanna - Q. Tristanna's playstyle is all about being a very bursty adc with a lot of disengage and can also blow up towers quickly. Her AS buff does contribute to this goal, but I don't think Tristanna's playstyle takes advantage of the AS buff as well as other adcs benefit from that sort of thing. Besides that, I'd consider her other abilities too critical for her playstyle to ignore. The reason her passive isn't here is because the passive extends the range of her E. I feel like her passive and E passive probably should be swapped since her E passive looks more like an actual passive while her actual passive looks like an ability-specific passive, but whatever.
Rakan - Q. His Q isn't unusable, but it is his lowest impact ability. It's a heal that's also a damage skillshot, but it's very low range, doesn't do a lot of damage, and doesn't heal for a ton. Compare that to his massive engage, powerful ult, passive shield (enabling the engage), and two ally dashes attached to a shield. His Q is just not where his power budget is. I will give it a shout out for proccing on Dragon, which means he is useful for early objectives and for proccing on Neeko and Shaco clone, which can be nice. Overall, it's still a low impact ability that isn't necessary for his kit to function.
Veigar - W. It doesn't contribute to his stacking and is difficult to hit with minimal methods of set-up.
Lee Sin - Ult. Insec is fun and fuels the lifeblood of the Lee Sin population, but it's also his most situational ability. It's his his one disengage tool and it's a really flexible ability, so it's by no means bad, it's just that he's a really early game ganking jungler, so he can't exactly afford to give up his main damage rotation. He also needs his W for early clears and the shield+lifesteal definitely isn't useless for his combat pressure. So that's why I'd cut his ult if pressed. Also, I wanna point out that Lee Sin's W would be one of the best shielding abilities available if it didn't scale solely AP on an AD champion. Just saying, most enchanters would probably kill for a manaless shield with 80% AP scaling attached to an ally dash and the ability to recast to half its cooldown. Not relevant to this discussion, but I had to mention it.
(Bonus) Aphelios - E. "Aphelios has no third ability. This slot shows the next weapon Alune will give him. Weapon order begins fixed but may change over game time - when a weapon is out of ammo it goes to the end of the order." - League of Legends explaining what Aphelios's E does.

Okay, and using your criteria for worst designed abilities rather than the weakest, I'll go over my mains again.
Kalista - ult. Her ult is the reason I picked up the champion and it's my favorite ability in the game, but it's also arguably her worst thought out ability. Instead of having an ult, she gives her support a Malphite Ult except it has a longer CC duration at max rank (Malph ult is 1.5 seconds at all ranks while Kalista ult is 1/1.5/2 seconds of knock-up) and is attached to a cleanse with upwards of 5 seconds of untargetability and invulnerability. Abilities that screw with the innate properties of your allies are going to be slippery to design because of how important synergies are. I already talked about Rell/Kalista being ungodly because Kalista's ult removes Rell's weaknesses as a champion. But here's a lightning round of other bullshit certain supports can get up to with Kalista's ult: Morgana's ult requires her to remain tethered for 3 seconds to activate, Kalista Ult > Morgana Ult at max rank means that Morgana will have 2 of those 3 seconds covered for free. Against mutliple people that gives them a third as much time as they otherwise would have had to respond, and against a single person, at level 6, you're looking at 1.5 seconds of knock-up comboed into a 2.5 second root potentially comboed again into the full effect of Morganna's ult (which has a 1.5 second stun and 300 + 140% AP damage at rank 1). At max rank, you'd be looking at a 2 second knock-up + 3 second root + 1.5 second stun plus 600 + 140% AP magic damage that you wouldn't be able to prevent given the first ability lands. A major Thresh Combo is E + Q, but after getting ult he has a different combo of E + ult, but you can't exactly go E + Q + ult + E, luckily Kalista's ult combos into all of Thresh's abilities as well as combining with his lantern to give both of them the ability to dash across the entire lane if necessary, which is a really powerful disengage tool. With Soraka, I had one moment where we got ganked by a Kayn who focused the Soraka to prevent her to from healing Kalista, but when Kayn ulted Soraka, I used Kalista ult to cancel out Kayn's ult due to the untargetability and Soraka was able to clap back with a Malphite ult, which resulted in me getting a double kill despite being over-extended and on low health. Effectively we put Kayn in a catch-22 scenario where targetting the adc would result in me getting out-healed while targetting the support would result in them getting a free zhonyas and a malphite ult. With champs like Taric and Braum, they're balanced around lacking gap closers, so giving them a massive dash also breaks their balance. Kalista effectively just adds years of game design experience to her support. If I was playing literally any other adc, me and my support would have both died to that gank. But there's a massive double edge to this ability. If your support doesn't know how to play around Kalista or otherwise just sucks in general, Kalista's combat pressure is effectively cut in half because Kalista goes from having the most broken ult in the game to having literally no ult. There's nothing you can do if your tethered ally decides to quarantine you, waits out the ult timer because they don't know how to activate it, proceeds to have the worst possible accuracy on the ult despite it having a really generous hitbox, takes too long to figure out how to use the ult and therefore misses the opportunity, they're playing something like Yuumi who somehow manages to not (or at least barely) benefit from additional untargetability + malphite ult, or they immediately and consistently ult in the opposite direction you wanted them to. Any of these scenarios are pretty common when playing Kalista in soloq. As a result, the ability is pretty much broken OP when you're in a premade but completely useless in soloq.
Azir - E. Zone control mages (and also Gangplank) are typically designed around the idea that the battle is reaching them in the first place. Azir in particular uses untargetable minions that he can reposition as needed. The thing with Azir's E is that it's a dash that can have the reach of the entire mid-lane, making the task of getting on top of him through his sand soldiers go from difficult to actually impossible. Alongside that, his E can be used as a strong engage tool and to set up an insec. The ability is just extremely powerful and the flexibility it affords this champion in conjunction with the rest of his kit is the primary reason why Azir is such a balance nightmare. Like, imagine if Heimerdinger or Gangplank could dash to any of their turrets/barrels regardless of range. That would also make the champion unfightable.
Thresh - Ult. I argued that his passive doesn't synergize with his kit, but I wouldn't say that the ability shouldn't be there. Think of it like Archeops from Pokemon. Worth noting that Pokemon isn't balanced like League is, so Archeops isn't meant to be as powerful as actual top tiers (and Archeops is a more extreme example than Thresh). If Archeops didn't have its ability, you'd effectively be staring down a pokemon with attack and speed stats almost as high as Mega Salamence, with a better offensive typing, access to really powerful attacks like Stone Edge and Acrobatics, and it's available level 37 rather than level 50. Thresh is in a similar position but it's less extreme. His Q is the most flexible hook in the game, his W gives his allies a long-ranged dash which acts as both an incredible engage and disengage tool (also, unlike Kalista's ult, basically every champion in the game can use it effectively but there's no champion where this ability destroys their balancing factors), and his E makes landing his hook easier in exchange for having lower range than hook. He's a roaming heavy support that when played optimally can snowball his adc, mid, and jungler while never really having a point in the game where he's weak, even when he gets behind. If he were allowed to roam unchecked, this is exactly what would happen, which is why his passive exists. As far as actively detrimental abilities go, I do think Thresh's is really well designed because it doesn't even initially look like a detriment and there are situations where his passive is helpful, particularly really long drawn-out games and when the enemy team is mostly AD. I also like that it's detrimental for a more subtle way than these types of abilities directly are because his passive fucks with his game plan by being in direct opposition to his goals. Basically, Thresh has a scaling passive that requires him to spend a lot of time in lane but he's a roaming champion. The reason why I'd say his ult is the worst design ability isn't because it's poorly designed per say, but I think his ult is can be a little clunky to use but is still extremely powerful. If Thresh had a weak ult, that would give him room to have a stronger passive, but his ult isn't weak. It's just as flexible as the rest of his kit and that's what makes it powerful. Basically, I think Thresh's ult is very powerful but he has a kit where if I had to make one major change to his kit, I'd allocate power budge away from his ult in order to have a non-detrimental passive. I'd also just consider his ult to be kinda okay. I guess I could list his E too for the same reason, but I want to defend his passive since it has a good reason to be the way it is.

I can understand all of these takes except for your first Kalista take. Q is really useful for combos and burst damage because without it you can't double rend. I'd 100% say your second point on Kalista is better though. Her R has a niche use-case where if you're playing with an Enchanter support you either lose access to you're R so you can get your W passive, or you lose access to your W passive so you can put it onto a teammate that can benefit from the R more. Obviously there are exceptions like Morgana as you said. This is why we in the Kalista player-base try getting tank supports like Alistar, Rell, or Leona lol. Still though I good takes all around!

The criteria have gone more and more loose the farther you went in to the list. You started out really good, but some decisions were downright lazy... Like how are you going to call Kayle's entire existence (passive) the worst designed ability in her kit. Or Illaoi's E... its annoying, but its literally just her playstyle. Without it shes a cannon minion. The inconsistency infuriates me :/ Yet youre going to call Draven. Lux or other champs with similiar broken abilites perfect...

Teemo W is actually really valuable. It allows him to kite people and stay out of bad situations, and it allows him to run people down if they over-extend. The only reason it could be seen as a "bad" ability is when you compare it to modern champions with all their screen-wide dashes and stuff.

Pykes ultimate is the majority of the power in his kit, Unfair and overpowered 100%, but his worst would easily be his W. Nunus Passive or E sometimes feels like they are there to be there, saying he has no bad abilities is flat out wrong. other champions that also have this exact thing happen Fiora, Lulu, Karthus(yes you need to explain why, with his W right there), Senna just to name a few, and more that i cant argue fully on without more experience on each.

    Predictions for Garen, my main.
Finding a bad ability in Garen's kit is very difficult as each of them has a clear purpose and is functionnal at what it does :
Passive : Allows Garen to stay forever in lane if well used combined with the fact Garen has no mana so he can stay as long as he wants in lane
Q : Chases someone and silences ennemy. While not being the best CC, the silence is the most balanced CC we can find for Garen's current kit.
W : Tankiness, tenacity and shield in one button. Farming allows Garen to be tankier than most bruisers in toplane.
E : Spin2Win. Attack Speed scaling is good enough to open Garen to Attack Speed items despite of his bursty nature compared to other juggernauts.
R : DEMACIAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!! One of the most brutal ultimates in the game since it scores most of Garen's kills and being near him low-HP no matter your level is a death sentence for you since it's point-and-click.
Now the award of the worst Garen's ability goes to... passive. While being good at what it does, it's very flawed if the ennemy laner uses the 8 seconds window during which the passive doesn't proc at his favor. Also Sett's regen passive is better in that regard and procs naturally.
Edit : well, guess I'm not good at predicting

So im going to try to help vars and others explain some bad abilities vars points out, or if he was being too biases. Note this is from my personal exp with these characters so i won't be ablt to vouch for them all. So for aphelios his q turns into a turret i assume so he can activate his secondary abilities at a distance like how his sniper gives him more range. For ashe she has the hawk game wise so she can hit her global ult better, thats why it stays at the location for a few seconds. Brands q is mainly so he can single out someone for his passive stun. Cass w was biased, it worked perfectly with her kit by applying her poison so her e can work better plus they cant run from her as fast, if anything maybe her passive could use work but other than that no bad abilities. For cho'gath i say his e is the most weird, it gives his range and poke but the aiming is weird plus most times you're building him as a tank so you can't really use it for damage, yeah it is based on their hp which is good for tanks but for a tank melee character that eats ppl i feel it should have been a move speed up buff or a cripple. His passive works cause it gives him sustain in lane and jungle. For ekko i think we all know his passive is what brings his kit together, his q can hit twice so all he needs to do is smack them which his e lets him do. Ekko deserves the no bad abilities. Elise passive works cause shes a sudo assassin/ fighter so when she catches someone and fights them she can have great sustain in the fight and not die immediately like most mages. I say elise is another no bad abilities cause they all work together to form a rotation. Where as i normally would agree on fioras passive true damage, theres way to many tanky champions in the game to not have her, imagine cho'gath, sion, or even malphine just walking free with no counterplay. Irelias Q...i don't think i really have to talk on that, lets just say her passive deserves this spot. For lillia i would say no bad abilities cause her w is pretty decent damage and that not counting if she slept someone, and its balanced by the fact its a wind up so they can move. Morganas passive gives her really good sustain in lane or jungle, especially for a character that has to ult in from of your face to lock you down. I say no bad abilities. Just like elise her kit rotates into itself pretty well. Without nasus passive dude could not lane, the sustain he gets from hitting minions keeps him alive or even hitting the enemy. otherwise he just get poked down while stacking Q. So Nocts spell shield is cause he mainly goes after mages and supports that cant fight him 1v1 in melee range, otherwise he gets beaten by tanks and fighters and adc can burst him down with autos. I think we know why rek'sai passive works on her, jungle sustain, assassin, its basically what eve has in her demon form. So for miss glasc her e does enemy damage but also shields your teammate so again has its purpose especially when she's is suppose to stay in the back. Shen W is situational? Its what gives him the most safety in fights, his E forces him to dash to the enemy and makes them attack him with autos to which his w blocks all autos, if anything his passive shields is the broken part. Sona... no bad abilities. (Curse you seraphine)

I think I have to agree with the shen w but it certainly has important uses for lane baiting and short trading, as well as ulting someone and immediately casting it, which against certain comps can make or break the exchange. Its definitely a little weird though, but frankly his q e and r are so solid and work so well together idk what kind of new ability they could replace it with.
