Again !!!!! , Thanks for your videos !!! I constantly rewatch a couple times a year since I forget so much. Have a great day my friend ! You make a positive difference !
Hey thanks for the tip! I know I'm a bit late to the party, but if you use tempo tap, you can get the tempo as low as you want. If you were to set it to 30, it would be even double the show length in the video
You can also switch between different Project Presets and it stays in sync, just copy your current session over to a new empty session and save then switch between them and so you get a lot more room to play with this way. So for instance your session is F01, just copy it to F02, F03 etc. edit away and switch between them using Value buttons.
Another great tutorial and informative. A few weeks back was considering getting rid of my JDXi ..but watching videos and tutorials has awakened my enthusiasm for the synth. I am now having fun with it. It's alright having a manual to learn but much better to see someone visually showing what to do. Thank you. Also I have now obtained an overlay for the jdxi got on order from a UK shop. 👍🎹
I did try this, it's only good for drum or bass parts, on the screen it still shows a 4 bar repeating pattern so it doesn't help with lengthy chords or pads, plus the tempo will be inaccurate when you increase it. But it's a neat trick all the same.
Instead of using the knob to increase the tempo, you can change it inside of the menu, so you can control how fast it changed without it jumping too fast
@@stanislawmocul Never got round to making a video but have an internal power bank. Works OK apart from glitching on the analog circuit which is apparently due to slight voltage differences.
To do songs that have a 6 measure phrase (e.g Gary Numan Cars) change to 12th pattern and divide the 48 overall steps (4 by 12) into 6 measures (6 by 8). You are limited to quarter notes however
Great! If anyone has used Reason, you know you learnt exactly this tip from the ReDrum. This Monday I'll have my JDXi, can't wait. Cool to see this feature, I was panicking already I had no chance to make longer patterns.
Hello, thank you for the tutorials I have found them very useful as I have just purchased a JDXi. Could ask if you are able to do a tutorial on the arpeggiator of the JDXi. I have been trying to get an 80s baseline similar to say funky town which uses octaves and I am not sure if I can adjust the arpeggiator settings or do I simply use real time record? Thank you
Thanks for the useful tip.. Im trying to do a 8 bar 'chillhop style loop / piece. . Ive increase to 32nd notes, incresed to 8 measures and decreased speed to 35bpm.. but I cant add the shuffle feature correcttly. Im assuming thats becuase this machine only offers 16th shuffle? Thanks kindly for your help :)
TheTeekayes you can do 3/4 (6/8) but from what I know you can’t do any “weird” (non generic) time signatures. Roland for some reason sees this as an edm and beat making machine, and many of the presets can back this statement up. Although I love my jdxi, after about a year of owning it, you learn just about everything it is capable of doing, forcing you look into buying other keyboards. Some of the presets are great and really help with making new ideas, but 80% of them are either cheap sounding or just unusable.
Hi thanks for your tutorial, this was very informative. I would like to know how do I program my synth to standard 4/4 time? or is it already set to 4/4 time. also when it is in 4/4 time what do each of the notes mean? is it like 16th notes 32nd notes etc? thanks a lot
Yes in the menu there are scale settings you have three choices 12th note triplets 16th notes(most common) and 32nd notes. if you make a selection here you will see the grid length change accordingly. you can get a feel for that with the markings the white lines above the step buttons. so yes 4/4 is the default with 3/4 being set by choosing the triplets. watch the sequencer when you change the settings and you will see this physically implemented.
Thanks! I have a question about updating sounds. When the sound updates are installed, delete the ones that the synthesizer already has or add the new ones while keeping the old ones? Does it affect already created patterns? Thank you!
Thanks, say, who put the 2 thumbs down? Seems like good information to me, may be they don't like all those bars of extra music! Use to own a TR909 and 606 works the same way, more room now to create more complex patterens. Thanks again.
For Synth's Sake sometimes it’s not necessarily about you and your video. Some people see that “0” on the thumbs down and it piques their attention. They go “ooh I want to be the only one!” Then that 0 turns to a 1 and, next thing you know, that grabs some other guy’s attention. “why does he get to be special?? I want to be special too!!!”
For Synth's Sake in other words, they’re just special snowflakes who feel the desperate need to be “different” and “individual” regardless of whether it ends up making them look like shit socks
I think you can, I saw Ed Diaz doing it or something like that, just look for “Roland JD-Xi Pattern Sequencer Ed Diaz” idk exactly, it may not be this title, but I remember watching his video and when he added more measures (1 to 4) he copied the “divisions” of the first to the other 3
I've tried to build a track using this tip..The track being Depeche modes Behind the wheel...you can't record in real time using this method as the jdxi somehow gets confused and plays it in step mode..The jdxi gets a little confused during other tweaks to the effects also in this setting as they cut out during playback...its great to sequence a drum pattern but not a full track using the other 3 sounds.
It could be a combination of many factors and what you describe could be it running out of memory internally. Clearly what might work for some might not for others. its unfortunate in your case Colin it didnt work out..ive noticed similar things on the FA-06.
there is a quantization problem using this method in real time record, the jdxi gets confused with it only having 4 measures built in to it..as I said it's great for adding longer drum sequence programmes but is very limited using other styles of sequencing...you do a great job on here with your tutorials tho so thanks for taking time out putting your video tutorials on here.
@@CWAdventures1968 I totally agree. After the honey moon phase with the JD XI I went on a mission to lengthen the patterns. When you get to 8 bars and save the track, the issues begin. It plays when and if it wants to, and the volume is muted. I'd turn it on and off and go to a track that does not use the above time stretching method...no problem. It plays fine. Although the JD XI is a jack of all traits, it's simply cannot do more than 4 measures without getting glitchy. I returned mine today (last day for return period).
yes very good point, the menu dive can do it too down to 5 and I always encourage people to do this so they engage with their synth. its a great tip and I may even do a very short quick tip video on that, if you've no objections.
Ok, so THIS synth actually has a usable sequencer in it! Most desktop synths now only allow you to record 16 steps or only 1 bar which is 1-2-3-4,then repeats, with no chance for a variation in the beat before it repeats. Example, Boom, tak, boom, tak, is all you get with MOST sequencers and synths with built in sequencers and beat makers NOW days.. VOLCA,YAMAHA AN200,So on. With the Roland you actually get more than 1 bar? So I could do a 16 count rhythm that can do a beat with 2 variations before it repeats yes?On this demo I counted to 32 before the pattern repeated.
@Брадесканх Thankyou for letting me know! I still have not been able to buy one of these keyboards yet so I am not able to enjoy such features yet. But I will! I know my old Yamaha PSS 480 keyboard allows you 256 steps or notes before the memory is full for that song. I would play 3 tracks usually looping them by stopping my recording and playing right on time. Its tricky and you have to sometimes do the track over if you accidentally play the last note too long like you say and the loop is all wrong, no cut off on that keyboard. It will play that long note and throw the loop off timing. So what you speak of on the JD is auto-quantize of note release. It is fun to play with this stuff though.
Again !!!!! , Thanks for your videos !!!

Right! Great add bro!
Hello! Thanks for sharing! I think it's worth mentioning that you can set your Tempo to whatever you want over 5bpm from Menu/Program Edit/Tempo
yeah this trick is extremely handy for more complex drum rhythms
Yes get some poly rhythms in it and it sounds great at those longer evolving soundscapes.
You can also switch between different Project Presets and it stays in sync, just copy your current session over to a new empty session and save then switch between them and so you get a lot more room to play with this way. Great, it is a lovely synth, The actual synth engine is great, I personally don't use the keyboard, it is used as a module.
main issue is hooking up to other devices to sync up as this is 1/2 tempo

It works for all of the parts. For example, 4 bars at 50bpm is the same as 8 bars at 100bpm
Great simply explained tutorial. I'm working on a battery install for the jdxi. will upload a video when ive finished and tested.
hammys70 you installing a lipo battery maybe?
3 years... And?

Where can I get more sounds? The roland axial site only has a small hand full of sounds for the jdxi. Am I missing something?
is it possible to record into the sequencer while it is playing?
Great! If anyone has used Reason, you know you learnt exactly this tip from the ReDrum. This Monday I'll have my JDXi, can't wait. Cool to see this feature, I was panicking already I had no chance to make longer patterns.
Anybody knows is it possible to output timbers separately (let's say bass from headphones and another timbre from stereo output)?
download the jdxi (0.28) manager application

Can one play slower ambient music, or does everything go in 200m/ph?
Does this mean the sequencer can only record 4 bars unless you stretch the timing out? Or is pattern record separate to the sequencer? Thanks
can you change the time signature?, like I want to do a song that's in 6/8
Great video! Is it possible to record different time signatures? 5/4, 7/4 for example?

I can't even see what you're doing. Why did you cut off part of the machine from the camera view?
Math, it's such a wonderful thing.

For Synth's Sake and when it say 16 on the scale setting or 16th notes (4/4 time), that meana each note is a semiquaver? y?
yes you can see the semi quaver in red against the 4/4 grid
For Synth's Sake ah cool, and what is 32nd notes, would that be 2/4?
yes and the grid will double

can you add digital effects to the drum parts eg delay to just the snare? Thanks again for another helpful video. 😊
yes
Also having a bit of trouble getting my head round how to do this....can you do a video on this Peter please?
Just hit the snare drum sound and then apply the delay. Make sure that the other drum hits FX aren't also turned on
You can slow the tempo down below even 60bpm with the tap button.

great vid, very useful info, thanks!

Haha excellent fudge. Thnx for that 👌
How do I copy from one program sound into a different program?
I have another jdxi question so I am getting around to answering as I cant recall off the top of my head.
Very helpful. Thank you very much :)
Slick! Thank you!
I thought it can't run on batteries because its analog? it will chew through batteries like nobodies business.
It does NOT run on batteries.

Literally playing it at 1.5x speed and it is still too slow
cheers

too bad they limited time signatures because the graphical sequencer. I get it, but it's really too bad

thanks for saying so and taking time to say it.
now the arpeggiator wont sync!
