Very nice! I'm getting ready to plant some onion 'set' today. Maybe 50 all together. Texas 115 variety!! Super sweet and delicious. Had a horrendous heatwave last year- from may to august every day over 100F, so this plot ended up being neglected. So we're rejuvenating the soil with compost and good crops this year. No tilling, just dumping compost on top of the dead weeds and grsses, and plating into the compost mix. Then well add compost or hay for mulch later.
I have a bunch of extra garden stakes, so I laid them on two saw horses so there was an inch space between themand taped them down to stop them from moving and was able to dry hundreds of onions this way.
Good question. I think because that was my first year I started them too late (I didn't had my raised beds prepared on time). Plus I didn't covered the soil with mulch nor did I water them.
I loved this comparison! I’ve been wanting another bed for more herbs and wondered about topsoil and compost cause I’ve always used SFG soil but everything’s getting expensive!
The pallet top was a brilliant idea, thanks! Will do that next year. This year, I let my onions dry on top of the soil in the sun, but when the rainy late-summer weather started, I had to pick them up and hang them under my patio roof. That went OK, but your method seems better. I've learned so much from your channel, please keep it up!
Thank you so much! I am so happy I can provide much value for you! Yes the pallet top works best. I also saw pictures of drying racks used to dry onions 🤣
Great video...I live in Long Island NY USA Zone 7a how deep do I plant my red onion seeds, I plant to plant both ways next Spring? All the best thank you!
Hey, great question. Plant them so that the bulb of the onion is fully covered and has half an inch or so of soil at the top. If you are planting from seeds plant them an 1/2 - 3/4 inch deep.
I believe that when planting onions, you should plant ones for your zone. Short, long or intermediate day onions. I'm southern usa so short day here, long day in upper states I think. Most of the big box stores carry long day variety here. Idk why. Probably because they're nation wide.
OMG! that pallet idea is genius!!!
Yes it works wonders and is easy to setup.
Hi,
I watch your channel because of the tests you do, so yes, keep doing tests please.
This made my day and give me the motivation to go forward thanks!
That pallet top to dry your onions is a great idea.

The are some really nice sizes definitely love the set up
They are! I am also happy to see them that big especially because last year I didn't manage to grow any :(
@@SmallGardenQuest They look awesome
@@SmallGardenQuest what do you think went wrong the prior year to cause the low yield?

Great video! I'm pumped to get my square foot garden going!
Great I am pumped for you to! How many square feet will your garden occupy?

How long will the onions last in storage?
Until the frost you can have them outside than if you have a good storage they can last until the next season 😊

I really liked the comparisons 😊
Thanks! In what soil do you grow your onions
