As a long time Lions fan, I can't tell you how many times that play would have been a fumble return for a td in the past. I think we hold the record for the most games lost by a fg
MCDC would rather the team fail because of his decision making than due to a poor performance from a key player. Keeps any negative attention on him rather than his players. Gives them the recognition during their successes and shields them from blame in defeat.
I think the other part that made it work is that the Packers' defense might have been a little relaxed thinking that they might just try to draw an offsides penalty. Everyone was thinking "there's no way they're actually going for it", so I think that Dan knew that he could catch some of the defense by surprise by going for it.
Most shows operate like a broadcast studio, while McAfee's operates like a locker room. Once they catch on to that, any coach or player probably gets pretty comfortable in a hurry.
As a packer fun, I was gutted but still pretty encouraged as a road game against the best team in the nfl this year was close all game. I know a lot of lions defenders were out by so were packers defenders. Hopefully both teams can get fully healthy for playoff time cuz it would be an absolute banger of a game

Im a metro detroiter, played hockey my whole life so I've been a huge wings fan and never really cared at all for football and new the lions were a joke. I never even bothered to watch a game until last year and more so this year. The lions and football in general gained a new fan. No matter the sport , it's always good for the sport when losing markets start having winning seasons. I was considering picking up a Gibbs jersey but after that Texans came and hearing his backstory , Bates is my favorite player
People fail to realize how EASY it is to go 40 yards needed to get the game tying FG if the Lions kick the FG there. Time was more of the enemy than the scoreboard. Not to mention you give control to GB, and the get the help of the Zebras as well. It's a different game than even when Pat McAfee played.
43 yrs of being a lions fan and so grateful I got to see this in my lifetime, always the joke team always the easy win, not anymore, you wanna beat us? Then you gonna have to work for it.
I love the 4th down efficiency going for it, people want to knock the lions going for it all the time, well last I checked all of the good winning Superbowl teams patriots, saints, chiefs all have been aggressive with playing winning football but now haters are not believing what they are seeing and oh lions should have done the opposite yeah play to lose, love the playcalling lions can keep proving everybody wrong and keep playing to win! GO Lions
I personally benefited from Campbells risk play that resulted in a 17 yard pass to Amon-Ra. I needed 14 more yards rec for St.Brown and a Lions win. So thankful for that. It was like that outcome was so far giving the situation but Dans call gave that 100x payout to my bet. Thanks Lions and being a Michigan/Metro Detroit native my whole life this is the most amazing time for me and the whole fanbase. The culture is without a doubt the most intriguing and entertaining and you always know that miracles may happen in any game.
Saban, saying if you believe in your players to get a yard. Then get it done. So you can run the clock down and then knee it and kick the game winning kick. That's how people have been doing for years since the 80s. If you give a team a 1 minute. They can quickly lead their team down the field and tie the game. Even worst hit wide open wideout that speeds for a Touchdown. So running the clock is what you have to get it done. They kick the ball 34 second. That's 32 second for the opponent to push down the field. An kick a fieldgoal
Detroit Pride!!! True Gritt!!! Dan Campbell is a great passionate coach he believes!!!! They listen and perform!!! From The Motor City!!!! Lets Go Lions!!! 💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥....
Ever think that it's the way the lions play dirty that causes their players to be injured so much more often? U try to hurt people and bite their kneecaps, ur kneecaps better be solid steel
@@camerongeiger4051people can never accept change and it’s human nature to make excuses for why said change occurred instead of observing what actually happened. The Lions have slowly and successfully built an amazing culture through great staff building and looking for the right type of mentality in their players. Just like Ohio fans are salty with UofM’s recent domination of them and amazing recruiting so are fans of other NFL teams when it comes to the Lions. The Lions must be “dirty”. 🤪 Oh well, we don’t care and will continue to play great football.
The real Detroit fans have accepted Dan's method. He is who he is and I'm okay with it. Win, lose, tie I'm riding with Dan. Because despite whether it works or not, I love everything else. He is all in on his players and this team. He gives everything he has. He feels the game and not thinks with his head which can be an issue if you think too much. I'd much rather trust a guy with his gut instinct than one who overthinks a strategy. If it doesn't work, thats okay. Also, the defense will be healthier by the playoffs especially if we get a week bye with the first seed. I expect Iffy, Cominsky, Reader, Paschal, Owunzurike, barnes, and anzalone all back by the NFC championship game. If not all, most of them. That's a perfect time to be healthy on defense.
Great points for sure. All things considered don’t forget, with all the injuries Dan wants this team to believe they can still win. I think that is one reason he went for it. He has shown in the past how these plays get the team to buy in to believe they can win not matter what. Motivation baby motivation.
between gibbs and mont, they ran ball 29 times between the 2 (15/14 respecfully). On pass side, 6 yes SIX players had least 5 receptions' and yes gibbs and monty both were in that group for catchs. Lions spread work all over.
That is how you establish being a champion! Not being afraid to risk it all. Champions shed blood! Champions are tried in fire, and made through hard knocks. GO LIONS!
Dale Earnhardt was a champion because he danced with death and didn't blink. Dan Campbell wins because of the same traits. If your team is used to going for it on 4th down in important situations, they don't pucker when you have to in really important ones. The more they did it to the Packers, the more air it took from their lungs and on that last one, GB looked resigned to the loss as Montgomery squeezed through a pile of blockers for the 7 yard gain.
This lions team is different than any other team I’ve seen. They’ve built a culture from the ground up. It’s a place people wanna go to and one they don’t wanna leave.
well the UNC QB next year is currently in the 4th round of State Championship football tonight in 20 degree weather here in NC, he's ranked top 10 QB in nation. He has a couple of team mates coming with him next year....I know them.....bit of a diva..but still in HS. This young man breathes, eats and sleeps Football. Go do it Bill...NC has so many players in the NFL...this place is jumping with talent
His biggest mistake in the NFC Championship game last year was NOT going for it and kicking the FG instead when we were in the red zone at the half. Everyone thinks its the other way around. No. THATS the one that haunts him. We convert that TD, we win that game. Any 1 of those terrible drops by WRs and we win. That crazy bounce doesnt happen and pop miraculously into the opps hands, we win. Them going for it and not kicking a FG was never the issue.
68% on 4th downs, 96% to make the FG. That's a 65% chance to win right now by going for it. That, versus at best a 50/50 coin flip cause that defense wasn't getting a stop. The other 4th down call at their own 30 was much more questionable.
Long time Lions fan here (saw Barry S. Play in the dome many times) I'll take the win but..... 1. Going for it on own 30 vs punting was stupid and gave GB a free TD 2. We got a bad spot at end of game (We had first down) the coach failed to toss the challenge flag he would have won it and ended the game early. Those were coaching errors that wont fly in the playoffs.
@@brianjarsma8069 Good call thanks!! Have to re-watch that play I thought he got it. I prefer the flag so they can spend some TV time on that particular play. Don't remember them spending much time on it with because it was so fast. Feel robbed of controversy. I say we make a new flag so we can challenge the auto challenge :)
@@brianjarsma8069 I just re-watched the first down they took away from the lions. No way did the booth have a view better than the call on the field. I froze the frame and zoomed on the computer. They put the ball 2 feet shy of where it actually was when he was down. But they are told the Booth is 100 percent right so not even the TV announcers argued it much. He couldn’t toss the challenge flag because a booth review already determined that it wasn’t a first down. Looked very very fishy to me. Go ahead I challenge others to rematch the play (amazon saves the game) and see the spot vs when he was down. Anyway the Lions deserved that win 2x with Gibbs giving GB a free time out at the end by running out of bounds + the questionable booth Re-Spot. Lions did everything they could to give GB another chance and GB blew it. So crying Packers fans can stuff it. :)
I'm 100% sure that they go for it on that 4th down, even if the defense was guaranteed to stop Jordan Love. It was a mindset, and a message to the league. It also shows they're not bluffing at all when they want to do some trickery and manipulate the game clock at the end of a future game. Next time they show their offense at the end of a game, the opponent isn't thinking "they're just trying to make us jump. Just line up, but don't move".
To beat the Lions, you also got to beat Dan Campbell. Dan Campbell's philosophy is a punch in the mouth. Fake punts, going for it on fourth down, run plays up the gut, rotating rbs...playing the Lions is a marathon.
Can somebody please enlighten me to how Goff's knee being down on the handoff didn't stop the play. I know he wasn't touched down by a defender but neither are Qbs when they take a knee in victory formation. What made this situation different?
When they side they’re giving themselves up. It’s about intent. Think about when a WR catches a ball and falls but doesn’t get touched, they get up and run.
I've watched HCDC learn from his previous mistakes & missed calls. His time management has become outstanding & I've been waiting a long time for the Lions to get their you know what together with a leader who has bowling ball sized cajones.
I don’t agree with ppl wanting mcdc’s head if that last 4th down failed. As a life long lions fan he has earned our respect and trust. Yes will some of those come back to bite us in the future but that happens. I’m happy he has so much faith in his team to get it done in clutch moments
The call to go for it on 4th down right before this on their 30 was still dumb. I understand going for the last one to close the game out, get it or not you can understand it and support it
The reason he went for it at the end of the game is because he did not want to risk another phantom PI call by the refs that happened the week before against the bears. They do lead the league in PI calls.
If I was. Packers fan I’d only be upset about the defense having to stay on the field after 4th downs. You make a stop on any of those; and this game ends differently.
Gibbs fumble against the Bears. Goffs INT in the 3rd against the Pack. Arnold's continual PI's in the End Zone. These are not injuries that keep allowing the opposition to be close, it's player mistakes, and those players keep finding a way to win.
this is just a genuine question, Goff’s knee down isn’t considered a spike because it is assumed there that he didn’t give himself up and was not touched, right? I was worried that New York was going to Jesse James the play and it was never mentioned.
No. First off a spike is an incompletion because you’re literally throwing the ball to the ground to kill the play. A knee would be considered a QB run for -1 yard. They clearly weren’t QB kneeling so he wasn’t down, just as a WR who falls after a catch but isn’t touch they aren’t down. Intent matters.

I would do anything for Dan Campbell to be my Officer in Charge. His leadership and speeches are incredible
Goff tried gnawing David's kneecaps off and forgot they were on the same team.
As a long time Lions fan, I can't tell you how many times that play would have been a fumble return for a td in the past. I think we hold the record for the most games lost by a fg
Damn! Nick Saban dropped some knowledge gems during this segment. I'm definitely making some mental and written notes about that. GO LIONS!!!
I literally got my pen out - as a music teacher!
@@kingkong6666right!!!
Truth!!!! That message hit
Crazy how comfortable coach has become with Pat. First game or two he seemed shocked by him. Now? Great duo.
I'm sorry Pat 11-2 no one is calling for anyone's head 😂😂😂
Dan Campbell’s chances of winning head coach of the year have increased! He’s in the race along with other coaches like Mike Tomlin and Sean McDermott!
Im so tired of hearing people discredit the lions. I'm done listening to this stuff and I'm done listening to Packers and Vikings players, coaches, and fans cry literally every week
This is excellent analysis by Saban here. Loved his thoughts!
The lions had an interception in the end zone but got called for a weak DPI. Lead to GB touchdown. It went both ways.
And multiple ABSURD “holding” calls that went GBs way.
refs missed goff's knee touching the ground before he got rid of the ball on that final 4th down play.
@Calibrownsfan it's been 36 hours since the game has ended. You've had more than enough time to learn NFL rules and why he wasn't ruled down.
@@Calibrownsfansmh. Not college bro
@@Calibrownsfan I highly recommend removing this comment by all respect. You clearly have no idea what the rules of football are.
Lets go Lions!!!!!!!
Pat, Jared ran over to throw during the time out because he hit his thumb on a helmet the previous play - he was also rubbing it after the game walking aroud on the field.
Bro, I love the energy! Dan Campbell’s mentality is exactly what this team needs. You can’t criticize him for being bold when it works and then flip the script when it doesn’t.
I can almost guarantee about 90% of us lions fans wanted him to go for it before he even went for it🤣🤣 we've been accepted Dans play style and we trust and believe in him 100%💪🏿💪🏿
Pretty much came down to who had the ball as the clock was running out . They both were scoring on each other.
That’s why DC went for it on 4th at the end of the game
@Treemendous_1 for sure
How about BBB BIG BALL BATES, Clutched out
Haha love that nickname. Legatron still my fav, hope that catches on
If it failed and they lost no real detroit fan would be calling for his head only people who dont matter i guarrante you lions fans love this style of play way more then the normal style that hasnt ever gotten them anywhere💯💯
The amount of packer fans that believe Goff was down because he fell is mind boggling to me! How can so many people not understand a real simple rule?
People fail to realize how EASY it is to go 40 yards needed to get the game tying FG if the Lions kick the FG there. Time was more of the enemy than the scoreboard. Not to mention you give control to GB, and the get the help of the Zebras as well. It's a different game than even when Pat McAfee played.
43 yrs of being a lions fan and so grateful I got to see this in my lifetime, always the joke team always the easy win, not anymore, you wanna beat us? Then you gonna have to work for it.
Wow, the life lessons from Saban and tying it in with MCDC. Greatness
I love how Coach Saban’s presence makes Pat turn so red🤣 thats respect
Detroit practice team > Green Bay
As a packer fan can’t always be on top 💛💚was a great game I hope we can have a rematch in the playoffs
Me too, would be an easy win for the lions
@mufflerdad5048 😂😂😂
I thought to myself right after the game they will play a 3rd time this year.
@@mufflerdad5048 stay humble . It would probably be a shootout again
@@rzrramon8310 We actually played each other 3 times in 2023.
Lions getting some of Ir players back for playoffs
Ever think that it's the way the lions play dirty that causes their players to be injured so much more often? U try to hurt people and bite their kneecaps, ur kneecaps better be solid steel
@@miketyson1717I guess high intensity=dirty nowadays, who knew
Defender literally ran into Watson… shouldn’t have been a pick
Skip upping rainbows due to excessive happiness! He isn't alone! 🎉😅
Goff wanted to go for it, Dan was thinking kick
Great points for sure. All things considered don’t forget, with all the injuries Dan wants this team to believe they can still win. I think that is one reason he went for it. He has shown in the past how these plays get the team to buy in to believe they can win not matter what. Motivation baby motivation.
We need MCDC on college Gameday!! Or to join the show with Saban on a day it would be great!!
between gibbs and mont, they ran ball 29 times between the 2 (15/14 respecfully). On pass side, 6 yes SIX players had least 5 receptions' and yes gibbs and monty both were in that group for catchs. Lions spread work all over.
Kicker bro is hungover
DC does the 4th down thing all the time. Did it last year in the playoffs against the cowboys.
Lions are on a 34-9 tear since the second part of 3 seasons ago including playoffs last year.
Packers fans don't like you for this 😅.. hell.. none of the haters do
Last night's ACC championship game showed what a team can do with 9 seconds left
Long time Lions fan here (saw Barry S. Play in the dome many times) I'll take the win but.....
1. Going for it on own 30 vs punting was stupid and gave GB a free TD
2. We got a bad spot at end of game (We had first down) the coach failed to toss the challenge flag he would have won it and ended the game early.
Those were coaching errors that wont fly in the playoffs.
Inside 2 minutes. Couldn't challenge spot.
We believe in MCDC. PERIOD.
Just line up, but don't move".
this won't work in the postseason. last year they lost to sf because twice they went for it instead of kicking fgs.
If “IF” was A 5th we all will be drunk 😅
Go Lions! 🙏🏽😭💙🩶🦁
Best defense is an elite offense
The call to go for it on 4th down right before this on their 30 was still dumb. I understand going for the last one to close the game out, get it or not you can understand it and support it
In MCDC we trust
The only 4th down call I didn't like was the end of the 3rd on our own 30
MCDC COACH OF THE YEAR 💙🦁🏈🏆🦁👑🧹
The reason he went for it at the end of the game is because he did not want to risk another phantom PI call by the refs that happened the week before against the bears. They do lead the league in PI calls.
If MCDC wld just not go for it on the 30 the one time they wld have perfect strategy IMO
The amount of packers fans saying he was down because his knee was down is embarrassing 😂😂
Was the QB down before the handoff...? what am i missing?
You’re missing the rules lol
If I was. Packers fan I’d only be upset about the defense having to stay on the field after 4th downs. You make a stop on any of those; and this game ends differently.
USE JAYDEN REED WTF
Gibbs fumble against the Bears.
Goffs INT in the 3rd against the Pack.
Arnold's continual PI's in the End Zone.
These are not injuries that keep allowing the opposition to be close, it's player mistakes, and those players keep finding a way to win.
HIT ON 14's
I hated Saban's team (being a Gator fan), but he is a high quality coach. I just wish we had better teams after he got going.
I just worry that the lions will run out of steam at the business end of the season
this is just a genuine question, Goff’s knee down isn’t considered a spike because it is assumed there that he didn’t give himself up and was not touched, right? I was worried that New York was going to Jesse James the play and it was never mentioned.
No. First off a spike is an incompletion because you’re literally throwing the ball to the ground to kill the play. A knee would be considered a QB run for -1 yard. They clearly weren’t QB kneeling so he wasn’t down, just as a WR who falls after a catch but isn’t touch they aren’t down. Intent matters.
