My mother was a Russian refuge who was born in Shanghai and the stories you tell bring back floods of memories for me! She told me there were thousands of "giant Hong Kong Wharf Rats"! When she was little she desperately wanted a doll but no $. So she found a dead rat in the street, brought it home, dressed it on doll clothes and out it in the doll bed. After a week or so , her mother kept sniffing and asking "what is that HORRID smell?". She found the rat and her parents broke down and bought her a real doll.

I was raised in SF. Moved to Oregon in 1979 and brought my 12 yr old daughter to SF Chinatown. Took her in a back alley to a Chinese fortune cookie maker. He was at least 100 yrs old. He'd been there since i was a kid. He literally had burnt the fingerprints off his fingers taking the cookies off the hot iron for at least 50 years. He gave us a bag of FRESH COOKIES he made...we were in 7th heaven!

0:55 Jim - Here's some insider's secret: For dessert, Chinese restaurants give sugary soups (like the ones with red bean paste or green bean paste) to Chinese, and cookies or oranges to non-Chinese. From experience, they find that non-Chinese people don't tend to like the sugary soups, so they skip the offense and give the boring desserts to you. I know - because I saw it happening at my own table of mixed-race diners on many occasions. Next time, you should ask the Chinese restaurant to give you the dessert that they give to the Chinese customers.

I don't think that Chinese restaurants are really interested in broadening your tastes. They're more concerned about you enjoying your meal and (perhaps more importantly) not making you feel repulsed by their food.
Here's another secret: Many menus in Chinese restaurants are things that non-Chinese are familiar with and will order. Chinese will order things off-menu; these things are not as pleasant to non-Chinese. Just watch Anthony Bourdain's video at a Chinese restaurant in New York. His Chinese friend introduces him to all kinds of dishes that he never knew.

Several years ago, my best friend and I visited San Francisco with our 2 giant German Shepherds. On Pier 39 as I waited outside a shop with the dogs while my friend browsed inside, a group of Chinese tourists emerged from a tour bus nearby. Many of them approached us and immediately began taking photos of our 2 dogs lying side by side, and, judging by the tourists' exclamations and finger pointing, they were quite amazed at the sight. I'll never forget that. 🐕🐕‍🦺

Can't be eating when watching Jim so I don't choke! Toured a fortune cookie "factory" in San Fransisco. When still warm they are delicious! Factory in air quotes because there were only two little elderly people making the cookies, they were the whole factory.

Tea eggs and thousand year old eggs are awesome ! It’s an acquired taste though, just like blue cheese , which is really just moldy curdled milk to someone who is not used to it 😂

The jokes about Asians taking pictures with your blonde children 😅 This actually happened to me & my blonde friends when we were about 11 or 12 on a field trip to San Francisco. Once we realized it was a thing for Asian tourists to asked for a photo w/blonde American children, we spent the better half of our afternoon lingering around waiting to be approached by as many tourist as we could pull in! I couldn't count how many vacation photos my friends & I ended up in...it was such fun🤗😅🎎📸

Loved soup dumplings when I was in China. One of the best things I had there. Did not enjoy the 1000 year old egg. Had to try it though, because I gotta try anything that gets offered to me.

@Darren MacQueen: Soup dumplings (xiao long bao) are definitely awesome. The 1000-year-old egg is an acquired taste, but throwing it into a wok with some vegetables or into a pot of soup gives the egg great flavor. The stinky tofu is one scary delicacy, though

@@globetrekker86 Yeah, I tried the egg on its own. Lol I had several people tell me since that I should have mixed it in something. A friend of mine says it's really good in rice porridge. After my first experience I'm a little nervous to try it again, but maybe someday.

@@darrenmacqueen9884 that’s so funny you had the 1000 year egg by itself LOL. My family only eats it with congee. And even then I’m not sure I like it.

It's not really 1000 year old! Don't be stupid! Do you really think they'd keep an egg for you for 1000 years? haha. It's 600 years old

As an aside does anyone know how the soup dumplings are made? I live in China and there is a very good restaurant chain called Din Tai Fung. Michelin recommended affordable dumplings! You can find them in the US, delicious soup dumplings indeed. So they are actually simpler to make than it sounds (if you know how to fold them that is!!). When cold the soup actually has a jelly-like consistency. They stuff that together with a little pork inside each dumpling, fold, steam et voilà!! Bon appétit but as Jim says be careful, the soup is scalding hot inside, you better take the dumpling and let it cool down in a little bath of vinegar or soy sauce according to your preference. It’s sssooooo good man 🤤

I was in Taiwan for business and really looked forward to the cuisine and spending time there. Unfortunately, i got food poisoning on my first day there which really hampered the experience. Still fun times, celebrated my birthday there that lasted about 40 hours with the time change on the way back to USA.

You HAD to have gone to a Catholic school! You remind me of the Xavarian Brothers that taught me...your finger is on the pulse of the human condition. You, sir, are a classic comedian. Out with the vulgarity...and in with the hilarity!
I've idolized them all.. Winters, Williams, Cosby,
    Pryor, Seinfeld (well...),
    Berman, on and on...
You are in a league of your own!
    So we'll crafted..so ballsy...
I am gonna suffer from some kind of physical incident, from laughing so hard. The best!
