For me, I started out with drag and drop back in gamemaker 8. I was scared of code as it was just so foreign to me. However, drag and drop was real simple as the icon with the 8 directions meant I could move my character in any of those directions, it was straight to the point! But yes, code is definitely superior. I got out of drag and drop once I started making more "complex" games that needed way more variables and math. It was out of necessity that I started learning GML. I started off small with converting what I had in drag and drop into lines of code. I realized my super long chain of drag and drop symbols could be converted into a few lines of code! I was completely sold on code from then on. I personally don't think I would have gotten into coding if it wasn't for Gamemaker's drag and drop system so I do thank gamemaker's dnd system even if it's not that powerful.

Great into. I've wanted to make a game since playing SNES in the 90's, but never could even comprehend the basics of programming, much less get a game going. GM Studio looks like something I can actually learn. That DnD thing is super cool, with the ability to convert it into code. That will make learning how to code drastically easier.

I don't know if it's because it's 2024 and I'm using a newer version, or because I'm on mac or whatever, but SO many things just don't work the same way for me. For example if I tried to add my sprite to a room while the instance layer is selected, it says it's not possible and I need to create an asset layer first. One I didn't figure out yet is that I created an object with an event to move my sprite, but upon holding the corresponding key, it just doesn't work. Still a fantastic video to get a first grasp at what's going on, just thought it would be worth mentioning for those who get into it now!

Great content, what is the best way to start learning ? do you have very small hyper casual games tutorial ? or do you know any tutorial that type of games ?
(12:35) In the rooms section of this video, somehow I can't get my cursor/brush to be the object. It also says that my room is 1 but not 0 like the one it shows on your video. I need help, I wanna get to know how to use the rooms section of gamemaker studio
Nevermind, it's been solved For anyone who has the same problem, just make sure that you link the "create object" area in workspace to the sprite you want. (To the right of the sprite image in the create object area, there will be a drop down option). But if the problem still occurs, double check the assets (right side of your screen), and look at the "layers" (e.g: "> objects", "> rooms", "> sprites", and others like the "> timelines" in my case). Play around with it and find out on how to fix it by making sure that the sprite image is under the "> objects" in the end. Then just go into "rooms", hold alt then click.
Very good work! I liked that the tutorials you recommended I did them all (several times each). It's good to know that I spent the time learning the tutorials well. It seemed strange to me that you don't mention "Let's Learn GameMaker: Studio" which is a channel that talks a lot about GML. I learned that game maker in addition to being a good engine for making video games, it is also used to create musical videos and cartoons. GREETINGS AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EVERYTHING!

i started out with scratch. i made a game on there that im super proud of and im gonna remake it on game maker. thanks man!
First tutorial I watched for learning this software. Thank you :)
Great content, what is the best way to start learning ? do you have very small hyper casual games tutorial ? or do you know any tutorial that type of games ?
this might be too small/hyper casual but theres a tutorial named "Space Rocks" that lets you create a simple little arcade game in about 30 minutes
this was my first stop in what will likely be an interesting and challenging process. thanks for the data
(12:35) In the rooms section of this video, somehow I can't get my cursor/brush to be the object. It also says that my room is 1 but not 0 like the one it shows on your video. I need help, I wanna get to know how to use the rooms section of gamemaker studio
Nevermind, it's been solved
For anyone who has the same problem, just make sure that you link the "create object" area in workspace to the sprite you want.
Then just go into "rooms", hold alt then click.
just switched to game maker from unity. thanks it helped me a lot!
This is great! The fact that GML is like JavaScript is also really good because I’m learning JavaScript rn anyways
thanks for getting me into gamemaker at 1am, I owe you
Very good work!
