Same set up almost exactly. Do remember to turn off your spare steering pump, with both going at the same time the hydraulic oil tends to heat up and throw an alarm. Usually at 3am on a long passage and I have to go in that compartment and try to cool down the tank with a water hose so the emergency shut off doesn’t kill our steering. 😅
Matthew, thank you for sharing your back up manual steering solution in the event of a double hydraulic pump failure. That wheel in the cabinet was awesome!
Good day sir. I've been soaking up a lot of your content and thoroughly enjoy your humor. This industry intrigued me a couple years ago and I find myself very seriously considering this lifestyle. Thnx so much for all the info and the tag along 👌🙏🌞✌️
Thanks for another informative video, just a thought: a slight modification to the emergency steering wheel, and you can run it with a battery impact wrench.
Quick question, does experience such as boating experience in the us navy help contribute to the yachting industry? Now to thank you, I have about 6 videos saved on your tips from 3 years ago on getting into yachting. You provide so much valuable information and you have no idea how much I have appreciated your work and effort that you put into your videos in the past 3 years. You truly have helped kickstart my career. Your videos are also educational but entertaining at the same time.
My pleasure, and thank you for letting me know how useful the videos have been. To answer your question, I think that any previous maritime experience is of benefit to someone wanting to join the yachting industry.
Thank you for your help. I know you are leaving the industry again in a few months, so I wish you the best of luck on your new business. @@WorkonaSuperyacht
Thanks for this video. Do you know how fast you can switch from an cruise ship captain to become a superyacht officer/captain? At the moment I am studying nautical science with the goal to become a cruise ship captain. But I am also very interessted in yachting. Do you know how easy it is to switch, once I got my nautcal officer permit?
If you're working towards your OOW 3000 qualification then you need to fill out a training record book. I speak about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/L65ki2XvOBE/видео.html But if you already have your deck officer qualifications and simply want to log your time on board ship, a discharge book and seafarer's testimonials will be sufficient.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Would I need to work on a training record book to 500GT and work my way up? I'm new to the superyacht industry but i've been working on charters, I have a regular seafarer's training record book which is why i'm asking if i'd need a special training record book for yachts, thanks in advance!
@idkgg9588 The most widely used training record book in the yachting industry is: MCA Training Record Book for Yacht Ratings and Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (yachts, less than 3000GT). You can download a copy of it from the description of the video that I linked before. This training record book is required for getting an MCA OOW 3000 qualification, which is probably the best qualification to get unless you're working towards an OOW Unlimited qualification in the merchant navy (for which you will be issued with a different training record book). If your current training record book leads to a qualification from a different government agency that you prefer then maybe that is the best option for you. But if you wish to make yourself as employable as possible in the yachting industry then I recommend you download the MCA training record book and start getting that filled out.
@WorkonaSuperyacht yeah, the book I have right now is more for merchant navy but I'm getting more interested in the super yacht industry, would I be able to do the MCA without being in the UK? (I'm in the Mediterranean) thank you very much for your answer! It makes more sense now!
@idkgg9588 Yes, you can do the MCA qualification even if you're not British. The courses can be done at many schools in the Mediterranean, and you'll probably only have to go to the UK to do the final oral exam.
No we know how Mat stays so fit. We always thought it was his diet and working out. Come to find out, he I just turning the power steering pumps off and hand cranking the yacht. There are some yachts that have emergency steering set inside an engineering booth. M/Y Unbridled I think has a system like that in case the ship is taken over by pirates. Emergency steering is something you never want to use but you need to know it in case something happens. Dorothea III had a case like that when they were struck by lightning and had to steer all the way back to a friendly country off the coast of Africa. The storm was still raging so they were making constant adjustments to handle the waves and wind.
How does this compare to the emergency steering system on board the yacht that you work on?

👍✅ Tks Man
do you need a yacht record book to log hours/tasks on yachts or can it be done with a normal seafarer's record book?
