Even Black Belts Can Overthink Coming Back To BJJ After Time Off

  • I got a question from Operation Random on RUclips about coming back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training after a 3 month lay off. They say that they're nervous about returning to their BJJ gym and starting their grappling training over again.
In this video I share a recent story about one of the Black Belts and Purple Belts in my gym who just returned. I share this because layoffs and experiencing some nervousness or anxiety about getting back into Brazilian Jiujitsu is not just a White Belt thing.
When we first start something new there is fear of the unknown. Later on the fear comes from our own expectations.
But either way the fear is imagined and generally the reality of the situation is better than the imagined fear.
If you're getting back into BJJ after a bit of a lay off I hope this video is helpful to you!
    Thanks for watching the video.

I went back as a blue belt after a 3 year break after breaking my rib. I got my blue belt in 2010 and had been travelling around a lot since 2011 (moved cities\counties 4 times for work) so I spent 7-8 years as a blue belt. Finally got my purple belt in 2018. Going back was the best thing I ever did. Hoping to get my brown belt soon!

This is how I feel about coming back in February. I haven’t trained in two months. I’m a white belt though with two stripes. My life’s been a mess since I took a break. I can’t wait to come back. What I love about BJJ and martial arts in general is the discipline it adds to my life. My gym also has kickboxing, it’s amazing thank God I found this gym.

I just came back to my gym after recovering from an elbow injury for 3 months. So happy to be back, but was defo a little nervous about returning. Being a 3 stripe white belt (was actually given it today for returning and having been training for about a year even though i'm a little rusty), it's nice to see that people get these feelings at all levels. Thanks for the wisdom as usual Chewy! Preach!

I relate to this 100%...I haven't been training as consistently anymore. When I came back back after a long time off from training I was super paranoid about what others would think of me (i'm not dedicated, I'm lazy, i'm not the same guy anymore, etc.). I understand it's completely irrational and silly but I still feel a touch of that everytime I go to the gym. Once I get moving around on the matt a little those feelings fade and I'm glad I didn't bail.

This video could not have had better timing. Thank you so much. I’ve been out for 6 weeks due to daily headaches and facial tingling which I am working with my neurologist to find out. He was scared it could have been a clot from carotid dissection but luckily it wasn’t. Getting blood done soon. Guys at my school have been nothing but supportive and messaging me once a week checking in on how I’m doing and reminding me I always have a spot there and to come watch classes while I figure this out.
The support def helps ease the worry about not being taken seriously. But really what I tell myself is it’s my life and life just happens. And I’m thankful for such a supportive team. I’m a white belt with under a year experience btw. So much support. If they talk shit and make you feel bad, you’re def at the wrong school.

i went back to judo after a 30 yr break! lol......the colour of your belt doesnt matter, just let your training partners know you are rusty and getting back into slowly, it takes the pressure off, roll slow at first, make sure you bring up safety rules, ie.....i protect you and you protect me, no one gets hurt.....im avoiding full sparring (randori) until im ready, half intensity or throwing entry practise etc.....sensei is fine with it and appreciates it as they dont want unnecessary injuries.....even after such a long break, im amazed what i remember too, nothing forgotten after so many previous reps, itl come back to you soon enough.

    Hello Chewy.
I have watched a Ton of your videos and have learnt so much.
If you can reply to my question it would mean a lot.
I am 36 now and ten years ago I gave BJJ a go.
I was reasonably good and picked up techniques fairly quickly.
I only practised for ten months or so in NO GI as the concept of becoming a black belt was not on my radar and I only practised BBJ to help me with my my MMA.
I come from a striking Kung Fu background.
Now I think about the time that has passed and regret not knowing what I could know or maybe should have been.
    Long story short,
    In my shoes,
Would you dare go back and meet old faces who are now highly more advanced then you and can tap you out in every way imaginable making you feel even worse?
I understand black belt is not the end of the journey,
    Only the beginning,
And I know you recently achieved 3rd degree black belt.
    Congratulations 🎊
    But truly Bro,
    My shoes,
    What would you do?

I am the king of taking breaks. I've been going to the same gym for over eight years and have maybe two years worth of training total. I'm notorious for showing up consistently for a month or two and then taking three to four months off. Every time I take one of these breaks I worry I'll be criticized for it when I get back and someone will say something like, "How long before your next break this time?" But none of that has ever happened - it's always been smiles and open arms. I'm only writing this for anyone that might be in a similar situation (i.e. taken multiple breaks) and watched this video thinking Chewy's words wouldn't apply to them since they've taken more than one break - you couldn't be more wrong. Unless you were a part of some cult-like gym, your training partners will be nothing but happy to have you back.

I have this same issue. I started training almost a year ago and only have one stripe on my white belt. This is all due to me randomly taking multiple months off at a time or sometimes only coming in 4 times a month etc. it’s frustrating going back after a while due to the fact that Iv been going for almost a year but don’t feel like Iv made much progress, especially in rolling since I have rarely rolled. It’s frustrating still feeling like a fresh newbie that isn’t comfortable rolling and has the “I have no idea what I’m doing” mindset when people recognize me and know Iv been going for about a year /:

I usually see its an "ego" thing. Not in a bad way where they are super cocky. But people are used to being at a certain level and giving a certain level of competition while rolling. I tell them to start off slow like going back to weight lifting. We can't go at max weight after a lay off. Ill have them do some of the warm ups. If they Get through 10 minutes of warm ups. without stopping I tell them to remember the 10 minute mark and to get further than that the next day. So that day they may do 10 min of warm-ups before gassing and then definitely do the technique and see how they roll. Then I'll tell them ok you got thru 2 rolls today without dying. Tomorrow we'll aim for 15 min of warm up and 3 rolls. Slowly have them build back up. Theyre usually back mentally by the end of week and we'll have one more buddy back on the mat 😊

Hello I wanna share what happened in my gym yesterday
Basically I had trained traditional jiu jitsu lightly for 3 years (I began when I was 9) then I quit it and I hadnt returned to it until last november when I joined bjj, grappling and mma classes.
So I've been training for the last 3 months and I've been learning quickly.I am 18 years old, very tall and very flexible(not when i first came back though), plus i still kinda have the "technique" i learned when I was a child. I am loving these classes, and I believe contact sports may be my true passion, but yesterday this thing happened which triggered me.
So basically a 50ish year old man who began training in september (maybe even earlier) has rolled with me lots of times since i first began back in november. At the beginning, he could easily make me tap out quickly, and i couldnt escape his side control nor mount, but recently, since 2020 began i'd say, ive been winning him frequently, yet he hasnt won me once since then. At the beginning of January he was amazed and kinda "admired" me (wouldnt say that word in my mother tongue), he always complimented me when i made him tap, telling me i was learning very quickly etc.
So basically yesterday he asks me for a roll and i said sure, we start rolling i tap him out with an omoplata from a failed armbar attempt, he complained about me (for the first time of all we've rolled) being too agressive, like not being careful of harming other classmates and tbh that omoplata kinda was a bit risky but I assumed the fault and we just rolled again. He gets into my guard, gets armbar'd and taps, stands up and says "Im done" and left (not the gym, but the mat) and when later on our teacher told him to roll w me again he eagerly refused. Then when the class ended I saw him speaking with the coach, which kinda triggered me although I can't say if he was speaking about me or not

    • @warbastard01
      @warbastard01 4 года назад +2

Just ask your coach to watch you roll. See if he thinks you are rolling safely. If the 50 yr old guy doesn't roll with you anymore don't take it personally. (It's really easy to get injured by an 18 year old when your 50) he is probably worried about been injured and not been able to work.

Hey Chew. I have a question for you. I am in Barcelona training BJJ. Last week there was a seminar, where students from three different gyms came together. All of the sudden a white belt start rolling with a black belt invited to the seminar. The white belt made a scissor sweep that is illegal and broke black belt's leg. The fact is that the Coach of the white belt had warned this same white belt that this particularly scissor sweep was illegal.
Right now, nobody, even the Coach or even my Coach, know what to do. Kick this guy out? Punish him? Or do nothing. It seems that at the end, they are going to do nothing. What do you think? What would you do?

  • @hassenfepher
    @hassenfepher 4 года назад

ive asked before, but i think im figuring it out!
i want to get more girls into the gym. i feel like combat sports can be particularly useful to the smaller gender. (no offense ladies, your mighty, but statistically speaking, things can get tough for you).
for me (a giant guy) talking about going to "ass kicking day" is the wrong approach.
ive got this friendzoned chick that i hang out with a lot, and we got into talking about it as a capability thing.
instead of what excites me (basically kick the shit out of myself 'steel sharpening steel') more of an opportunity to push the limits of the human experience, and generally become more capable, and an overall better person.
i see you have a few chicks in the background of videos sometimes, id be interested to know what motivates them, any reasons they may have been hesitant to start bjj, and why they keep showing up.

great video. i need to get back in the gym and training but have been dealing with a heart condition and im just not ready yet. My biggest question on this is, i have a 7 year old who started training and has been doing bjj for about 8 months, he is a 3 stripe grey/white belt. he has competed twice and has 2 silver medals, and is the highest ranked in his class and trains 3 days a week sometimes 4 days. last few week hes trying to come up with excuses to not train. I think hes getting burnt out. i still want him to keep training but at the same time i dont want to push to hard and make him hate it. this week i decided to do other things instead off bjj to give him a little break. how do you think i should handle this so i dont ruin jiu jitsu for him.

There is NOTHING wrong with going back and only drilling for a week or more and then sparring again. Or drilling and then a quick roll afterwards. Do that till you build your stamina and game back up. You might have people hounding you for a roll but tell them to bug off.

If i have some neck issues can I still train ? I have been skateboarding for 25 years and searching for something similarly difficult, technical, and challenging for me.

I guess it depends where you are. If you are in a big city, I would say no, it's not common. Probably there is at least one black belt instructor in that city. However, if you are in a little town, or in a very isolated area, maybe no black belt has reached that place yet, and the blue belt has to step up. Where I live, there are maybe 10 academies with black belts in a 50 km radius, but if you go further, you start to run out of academies, and if you are lucky, you may find a brown belt or a purple belt teaching classes to have someone to train with
