Having worked in Unreal for the past 4 or so years, I can confirm that at least half of the process is either:
    1. Waiting for the code to compile
    2. Waiting for shaders to compile
    3. Waiting for the level building to be finished
    4. Smashing your head on your desk trying to find out why it's crashing
    5. All of the above

Fun fact I'm a full time UE4 developer. And a proper game project takes a lot of time while loading, compiling, bulding, automated testing and existing. I learned Finnish and Spanish also switched to ironman polyphasic sleep. It gives a weird sense of superiority and inferiority complex. I've recently been learning Unreal Engine after starting out with Unity and even though working with C++ wasn't as scary as some people made it out to be, I was NOT prepared for all the compiling and having to close and restart the engine that often. Blueprints are pretty straightforward and all other aspects of the engine feel really intuitive to me, but the programming in cpp part has been very unwelcoming so far. Also, I can't imagine having to work without JetBrains Rider anymore.

@@tripnils7535 As a beginner level programmer I can tell you, while the logic of "real programming" is the same as blueprints, there are a few marked differences. Writing out code really is more difficult than blueprints because blueprints allow you to just drag and drop nodes that represent different snippets of code, while you have to sometimes understand some pretty complex syntax and function structure while writing it out. You're probably just so used to writing code, or so well educated about it that you don't realize how much some people can struggle with it.

As far as crashing goes, it seems to me that Unreal Engine 5 is just a somewhat unstable program, probably no matter what kind of computer you run it on. I could imagine building a super computer with terabytes of memory, and hundreds of GB of RAM, and several of the best graphics cards on the market, etc, and it would probably still crash every now and then

Blueprints aren't a bad idea, but if you know how to draw a picture, you can draw a picture.
Unreal Blueprint learning process after Unity is like being given Jigsaw puzzles and asking to put them together, except you have no idea where the jigsaw puzzle part you are looking for is, or looks like most of the time.

First, they are kinda simpler. Simply adding a variable is two whole lines of codes or more depending on what you put in it. In blueprint, it is two clicks, and is very clear.
Second, I can't be bothered to wait for compiling the code and waiting for the engine to update with the new code everytime I make a small change. BLueprint is just faster for me

Unity has C# exist as a scripting language; it is compiled on top of the engine. C++ for Unreal is compiled directly into the engine. You need to understand the differences between the two. Blueprints = C# for Unity. C++ exists as a way for you to write code into the source build of your game. This exists because studios are say building an MMO. They are using Unreal 5 for the client and have a completely custom server backend. Or if you have game logic that is so sensitive you need it to run at a very low level for performance reasons. Something like netcode for a big multiplayer game. So if you used to use C# for a bouncing ball, you should probably just use Blueprints for a bouncing ball. But if you're designing a big multiplayer game with 900 players in a city, the server replication code for that bouncing ball should probably be written in C++.
You're having issues building your game because Play In Editor does not reflect real world performance or real world logic. You have issues with how your code is structured. A reference to something that does not exist in memory will crash. You need to use a soft reference, or a if you're going to use a hard reference then you need to make sure that at some point you told the engine to load it. Pay attention to the warnings you are getting in the console or your IDE of choice.
Unity does this by loading all objects in a referenceable state. This is really good for 95% of games, just like Blueprints are good for 95% of games. But there are lots of reasons why Unreal is structured the way it is. Its is why so many AAA studios with probably over a billion USD in investment combined in 2021/2022 have all switched to Unreal Engine 5 and have never once considered Unity. Square Enix, Obsidian Entertainment, Disney, Sony, Microsoft, CDPR, Ninja Theory, Focus Entertainment, Codemasters, RARE, 2k Games, GearBox, Tesla, Nvidia, Intel, AMD, Ford, General Motors, BMW, Tencent Games, Mercedes, NASA. Just to name a few.
It is because the engine allows people to do whatever they want. Unity is not open source. Unreal is.
I can't wait till you release the 30,000th 2d platformer on Steam built in Unity. The mobile game ads appear from China with location tracking data, contact data scrubbers and there is an ad for Weta Digital and an Amazon Prime ad for the new Lord of the Rings. Then you buy art assets off the marketplace and SteamAI blocks it was a another asset flip based on the fact there have been so many shitty Unity games released that they are now protective on who gets promoted.
Steam literally has a system where if you can't get 1000 Wishlist adds in a set amount of time they will probably block you from the promotion algorithm. If your game is built in Unity then its 500 adds.
Look man, I was a Unity developer for over 10+ years. The CEO of Unity now... sucks ass. I remember when Mike Acton was kicking fucking ass as the Unity boss and adding features to the engine.
    ruclips.net/video/rX0ItVEVjHc/видео.html&ab_channel=CppCon
He has a grey beard now but what made Unity great is long fucking gone. Its a struggle sometimes because I am trying to get Unity developers jobs and none of them seem to want to change from their workflow. They are for all intensive purposes, Unity Developers. They do NOT want to learn any new languages, they DO NOT want to learn new Shader workflows.
It just sucks, because sometimes I feel like there are shifts in our industry and as professionals we need to be willing to learn new workflows. Its like Blender vs Maya. Open source vs closed source. So many people just cannot get away from Maya. Just like Unity developers cannot understand that games are made in different ways.
Blender has come a long way in the past 4 years. We should open up applications from Blender artists for diversity reasons. Lets be real. A lot of young kids today on the bottom end of the socio-economic ladder are not going to be able to afford Maya and have been trained on Blender. Its free and open source, from a company perspective we can even save money on SaaS fees.
Its just that you need to be realistic.

Tricks for using Unreal Engine 5:
1st, Learn linear coding first before the visual coding. 2nd, use Nanite to make most accurate artstyle meshes possible without sacrificing the framerate, 3rd, its up to you to use either Lumen or your own visual lighting technology you build in
Edit: Unreal Engine (UE) 5 is better than UE4 beacuse even every artstyle also capable of Nanite to reach its maximum potential plus better meshes and graphics without sacrificing framerate. Even some devs move their scratch(es) from UE4 to UE5 for this advantages from Nanite.

@@handsanitizer2457 Someone completely new to the engine is best of first finding a project (Epic learning projects are best) when they can look and to understand how the engine wants things to be created, the mistake is going in blank and trying to figure it out on your own.
Understanding the engine and how it wants to run things will help you in the long run. A Berif run down is that the engine is designed for multiplayer games, like CS:GO but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used for other games, knowing this however will help you to understand the rest.
The gamemode is a basically the core of the game and is where you should start looking to understand how its built, when it comes to running the game, the game mode only exists on the server and clients can not access it.
Game State is what you use to hold game mode related values, not player specific. In the case of search and destroy, Game state would hold team scores and be used to work out when someone has won.
Player State is where you hold all the values you think would be stored in the game state, like player names, player kills, player deaths etc. Each player automatically has a reference to there own player state, the game state can be called by the players and has every player state. Which allows you to find out who you are on a server.
Depending on what your doing in unreal, programmer, artist etc.
You’ll find different needs, as a programmer, its worth understand that companies want you to write code in C++ but the engine is designed to work completely with blueprints, if your more comfortable with blueprints, its worth remembering that you can convert your blueprint code into C++ later down the line, reparenting is quite important. Also, C++ is closer to engine then blueprints are meaning that you can parent a blueprint class to C++ but not reverse.
If you’re an artist, make sure you understand optimising, yes nanite is a thing but it is not the be all and end all. It currently doesn’t work in VR. LODs are quite important, it is fine to export your models after the using Unreals auto LODs but do not use them as your final work. They are not optimised to YOUR models.
In terms of characters, if your creating human like characters, use the unreal skeletion, this will allow you to use ANY animations that exist for the unreal engine, it also means someone can create animations for a character that doesn’t exist yet and will speed up development.
There is more I could get into, you learn a lot when in industry and I am not sure how complex this is now considering I’ve been doing this non stop for 2 years but I hope it helps!

In my experience, Unreal is very powerful and has plenty of tools to make very advanced things, but that's also part of what makes learning a daunting task. I definitely wouldn't consider it the easiest beginner game engine to learn. I think Unity is more approachable for a beginner. Personally, I prefer, use, and contribute to Godot Engine. It's my go-to engine for pretty much any game project and is amazing for rapid prototyping. It's fast, and lightweight, and GDScript doesn't do compiling so that's not something you'd ever have to worry about.
Personally, I think Godot Engine is the best game engine for indie developers at the moment and it's rapidly improving. It's also free, so there are no complex licensing or royalties you have to worry about if you decide to work on a serious project.
I'm a little biased, being one of the engine's developers, but it has earned many of its merits. In general, I just like the workflow. It just feels comfy, and cozy, I don't really know how to describe it. The node-based scene tree structure just makes a lot of sense to me intuitively. I personally prefer programming to visual scripting, but Godot offers both for the discerning user. GDScript has practically identical syntax to Python so it's very easy to learn and fast to program in.

This dont just go for UE but the guy in the blog who worked at PLEX at that time said that every compile of their media server software took between 2 and 3 hours to complete because C++ spends so much time reading the same files over and over again.

My favorite part is in UE4, you could "hot reload" the editor to apply C++ changes without reloading it, except this would randomly fail to compile for no apparent reason! If you can still do this in ue5, they hid the button off somewhere because hot reloading was an actual trap option.

@@tradeandmagicofficial2563 no problem dude. I think that for artists blueprints are very good, they offer a good visual way to easily implement basic mechanics. But once you touch coding, you're never going to come back to blueprints again xD. It's just that everything is a lot more manageable. You can make different scripts for different purposes, you can organise your code with comments and colors, everything is a lot more manageable on a bigger scale and typing is simply fast than dragging a connection with a mouse. And you'll feel like a god xD. But given the fact that you're an artist, I perfectly understand why for you Blueprints are good. I'm just saying that as a coder, I'll never touch them because coding for me is A LOT better and faster to work with ;)

@@unohhhjjdd6716 yeah the background Is the key for pur different views i suppose ahah however with bluerints you can colore them under compressed nodes and make functions that you will use later in other classes so Is good, i think that the fact Is that you have an habitat to visualize things in a way that Is not compatible with blueprints. Me, as a dumb artist with veri basic knowledge of c++, having a node that tell what it does is simply a blessing ahah. However i wish you good work my friend hope your life will be full of good things and satisfactions.

I gotta agree with stormstudios1. I've tried both Unity and Unreal Engine, and while I still am far far far from mastering even the basics of UE, UE is much easier to learn than Unity. That's because with Unity, you HAVE to know how to write code or you can never make a game. With Unreal Engine, you only need to know the logic of code, not the actual writing of it

Unreal Engine is a nightmare to learn and be good at, but after you do so, you will almost never want to change the Engine (Except for 2D and Multiplayer, those are nightmareier than Unreal by Itself)

With unity and scripting and the API I can more or less understand what any of the stuff does.
With unreal is like every plugin and part has its own rules and is less unified. And the API is worse.
