- December 4, 1986 The funeral of television legend Desi Arnaz. Lucille Ball, Gary Morton, Desi Arnaz Jr., Lucie Arnaz, and Danny Thomas were among the mourners. Lucy told CBS 8 that her former husband was a great showman, musician, father, and husband and he was a great part of the innovation in this business. Danny Thomas spoke at the service and said "I will never ever forget his tremendous help to me, but I speak not just what he did for me, but what he has done for the entire industry."
Film at end is at Del Mar Racetrack on Jimmy Durante Day in 1958.
I’m 57 and I cannot think of Lucille Ball without thinking of Desi Arnaz.
Me neither
@@lesleymaner2851 Though Lucy went on to other versions of herself w/o the "boys", the pairing with the husbands was the best chemistry ever.
He never got the credit he deserved for being the brilliant mind in the production of the greatest tv show of all time. Thanks, "Ricky"❤
Lucy always gave Desi credit. However, there is a continual dispute who did what vis a vis putting the I Love Lucy Show together. Originally, Jess Oppenheimer was the executive producer, not Desi. Also, the writers Jess O, Madeline Pugh, and Bob Carroll Jr all knew Lucy from the radio show, "My Favorite Husband". Also, Lucy knew Karl Freund the cinematographer from movies she appeared in. Also, William Frawley, who was also in films, called Lucy about being on the show and she referred him to Desi. Marc Daniels, the original director of I Love Lucy was the one who spotted Vivian Vance, and had Desi come to watch her in a play and all agreed she was the one to play Ethel. Also, Marc Daniels the first director of I Love Lucy, according to his son, told everyone that Lucille Ball was the greatest actor he ever directed and he directed people like Paul Newman, Sallie Fields, Julie Harris, Laurence Olivier. (Orson Welles who appeared on one of the I Love Lucy shows, said similarly that she was one of the greatest actors of the 20th century). So in that respect 3 people really made I Love Lucy: Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Jess Oppenheimer.
Lucy still kept him in her heart, she was fighting back tears in her statement.
It's still a hilarious sitcom today.
I always felt they loved each other dearly. They just couldn't live together.
She couldn't live with hm and his wandering eye.
Desi had the same serious addictions when he married Edie, his second wife, but she did not work or have any career. I guess her job was taking care of Desi. He was working very little at that time and later had sold his shares in Desilu. Because of his drinking, Desi was making bad decisions, and the company was losing money. He had to sell his shares to Lucille. So she took over as head of Desilu - and was acting in and producing The Lucy Show. Desi had asked Lucy to make the show, since the company was losing money; so in the first year or two he was the producer, but left that role. It was said, he could not stand seeing Gary Morton do the warm ups as he once did. (That was a rumor not sure if it is true).
They Loved Each Other, till the End!❤️❤️
Desi Arnaz and Lucy were icons and even today their shows are still on.
Desi Arnaz was an innovator. Rest in peace, Desi Arnaz, and thank you. 😊
Still watching with almost daily, I Love Lucy!
His final words to Lucy were, I LOVE YOU
Actually, Desi's last words were a response to Lucy's 5 last comments: I love you. Desi replied, I love you too, honey.
Fun Fact: At the time of this funeral, Desi's mother was alive. She outlived him.
Why is that a fun fact ? No one wants to out live there children you moron
She died in 1988 a year. Before Lucy idk what from
@@AryaGandhi-jw2ny From being 96 years old. I'm going out on a limb and guessing that unlike Desi, she didn't smoke.
@@AryaGandhi-jw2nyDesi died in 1986. If his mother died in 1988 then it's 2 years later.

Wow very rare footage thanks for posting
How I wish the comedians that we have now, would bring as much laughter and joy as they did in the past. I believe we would be a much healthier and happier society today!❤
As much as we love Lucy, we love Desi. I am 56. Thanks for posting.
💯💯
You can see Lucy sitting with a perfect posture of sobriety and grief ,while the children are smiling and looking around to see if they are being noticed ,and the son in law is never behind in sharing the Lucy magic
any time that people hear a Hispanic speak with a Spanish accent, they think of Dezi Arnaz.
Lucy left us 3 years later .
I could watch this over and over. Thank you for posting. Have never seen the comments made by Lucy.
My grandmother, Viola, never watched television unless I Love Lucy was on. I remember my sister and I put on a skit for her when she visited once and I played Desi and my sister played Lucy. My grandmother gave us a standing ovation. This was in the 60's when life was a joy and good wholesome TV shows were abundant. Thank you Lucy and Desi for all the good laughs ❤❤❤
This year, Desi will be gone 38 years...WOW!
WOW
Hard to believe and Very sad. ❤
I watch lucy daily! 💖💖
Such a forward thinking innovator. A man of many talents. Unfortunately, one talent of his broke Lucy’s heart.
TWO talents of his broke Lucy's heart.
Desi, with all his gifts, was an addict: sex, booze, and gambling. His second wife Edith almost divorced him too. Any one of these addictions would be almost impossible to live with - but all 3 - don't know how Lucy and Edie made it through the many years they were married.
@@LJ-ht4zs he allowed his inner demons to control his life. Sad.
@@LJ-ht4zs Well, Lucy didn't mind the gambling as much as she did the drinking and womanizing. That's what really got to her. With the womanizing, Desi always claimed it was a cultural difference. That men in the Latin culture always have women on the side for sex but are devoted to and love their wives. Even Desi's father slept around. But Lucy, who was from a very old American protestant family and had pioneer stock in her believed in monogamy.
As for the gambling, she used to actually go with Desi to the racetrack at Delmar.
@@retroguy9494 Another reason why Lucy did not mind Desi's gambling - they divided their finances early on. He was gambling with his own money - not with hers. His second wife Edith did not have her own finances and had a great problem with his gambling. Edie knew Lucy and Desi when they were both married; in fact, Lucy and Edie used to play cards together. However, after the divorce Desi played around a lot with other women, (acc to his daughter Lucie) then apparently went with Edie - though she was still married. Her husband hired a detective and had evidence of her adultery with Desi. I think she took quite a financial hit in the divorce. Her husband was financially well off. So Desi's gambling, which like everything else he did, was excessive and she was on edge, and almost divorced him for all the addictions.
One of my all time favorite shows! Didn’t know his other skill sets until this segment. Back when television Was wholesome & truly entertaining.
Desi taught television production at SDSU in the early 1970s!
📺 Television back then was still dived by ALOT of racism.
( Network & Executive Producers )
Their we're not any shows with mixed race couples let alone Latin or Black shows.
This was rare!
"Spin the beans out of the cat bag"!!!! LOL. My wife is from Venezuela and she says "I will make her Spit out the beans"!!!!!
RIP Mr Desi Arnaz 🙏❤️
I owe them both a visit. He was an innovator, and just as incredible as She.
Gosh, I loved them and all they represented back then.
We love you Desi❤
Thank you for all you did! You made the world a better place! May you continue to rest in peace!
Back then, me & my cat enjoyed watching the hilarious "I Love Lucy" show for years & it always keeps my cat's ears up like an owl 🦉🦉 LOL ❤❤😀😀😸😸
Back in the day, when i was home sick from school, i was able to watch I love Lucy in the morning. Good memories ❤🙏✌️
When you have children together like they did there’s a connection that goes to the end of life here on this earth.
You are correct. As it should be.my first wife and I had a child. I remarried. She did. But we were friends. Had them over for dinner. My second wife got Breast 🎀 Cancer. It was aggressive. My wife and my first wife were good friends. Does seem strange. She helped me care for my sick wife till the end. A sweet soul. Checks on us still. My son with her is doing well.
He will always be Ricky Ricardo. I was 7 months old when he died. RIP Desi
The man was a genius!
@@Lauren-jh1ws And a saint to be married to Lucy.
@@1900intz Or the other way around.
@@1900intz btw Desi was an addict: sex, booze, gambling - before he met Lucy, during his marriage, and afterwards. His 2nd wife almost divorced for the same reasons. Lucy and Gary were married for 28 years - now such problems.
@@LJ-ht4zs Ms. Ball was known to be quite the drinker herself. Maybe that helps explain.
@@1900intz What does it help explain - Desi was an addict for years: before marrying Lucy, during their marriage, during his 2nd marriage. It was his problem - his alcoholism was very evident by the mid 1950's one in the am when he got up, drunk by noon. Explosiveness on set, firing people, arrested for DUI's and arrested when passed out in front of the local whorehouses.
Desi was way ahead in what he did!
Yes, he was.
The sweetest proof of their respect and everlasting love for each other can be found in Lucy and Desi's home movies, done by Lucie Arnaz. At the end, 5 see Desi and Lucy swimming in the family pool with their first grandchild ! Like no one else was in the world but the three of them !!
I teared up when I watched that scene in the swimming pool.
@@lisica8458 Watching that scene in the pool with their first grandchild, one would've never thought they had been divorced for over 2 decades.. so sweet and loving. May they both R.I.P.
I read somewhere that when Edie, Desi's 2nd wife died, Lucy offered to Desi to live in her guest house, till he was feeling better. He did not take her up on it, but she said, whenever he wanted he could come and visit and stay over. They were married 20 years and when Edie died, they were divorced for at least 25 years.
Great show
Still love this program. Love them both!
My grandparents lived and worked in and around that area til their passing, Lived around there myself for a while. Loved that area, and my grandmother loved Lucy!
How magnificent! After watching an interview with Lucie Arnaz she did recently did with the Celebrity Drop channel posted just five days ago I randomly decided to look up her mother to see if there was any new footage of her never seen or at least in a greater sense for me to be aware of. Load and behold I come across THIS posted just four days ago, a day after Lucie's Celebrity Drop interview was posted so talk about the timing there with that and me uncovering new Lucy material shortly afterwards. I never knew there was footage of Desi's funeral with Lucy there to witness it and give a statement afterwards. What a treat!
Treat seems the wrong word.
@@KindCountsDeb3773 I mean I get it's a funeral so it's sad in a way, but on the positive, its new Lucy footage uncovered when I thought I had seen just about everything about her.
Miss Desi and Lucy ❤
Thanks for sharing this footage! It's great to see and very interesting.
All time great TV genius, pioneer and legend.
He both helped and hurt Lucy. Life..
Desi Arnaz was a great man who got his due recognition too late. By all accounts, okay, he had a temper, but he was a fair man, an honest one, and brilliant.
Actually, people want to praise Desi which is fair for his gifts - but he was an alcoholic and when drinking he was quite explosive. It was said, while he always drank a lot, by 1955 it was from early in the am. (and by lunch time - he was going downhill) Actually, you can see it in the tv show, he was started to look bloated by then and by 1960, when they divorced and Lucy remarried in 1961 - he looked like he was in his 60's.
Desi was the love of Lucy’s life and vice versa.
I loved I love Lucy!!!! I watched it everytime it was on...I still watch it!!! God bless both of you in heaven....🙏🙏🙏😢😢😢....
And he Appreciated all the US did for him. He had a lot of respect for this country giving him so much opportunity!! Always. ❤
My grandparents watched I Love Lucy
I was a newborn when Desi Arnaz died, I was 5 days old when he died
And?
My mother didn't even know she was pregnant with me when Lucy died
Desiderio Arnaz
when I found out Lucy died I was at work [in a law firm at the time] and holding it together emotionally was very difficult that day.
Presently, I am watching THE LUCY-DESI COMEDY HOUR. So, their talents and memories will never die.
Actually never saw too much of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour - not anything compared to the I Love Lucy show. I think that produced 13 shows. After watching a few of them - did not find them that good or funny.
@@LJ-ht4zs I enjoyed the eps due to the celebs of the time. But the couple were going through a divorce at the time, so the eps were bittersweet.
@@MsBackstager Yes, you could see it in their faces and in the acting. I wanted to see those shows but seeing the pain or the tightness on their faces - did not want to see those episodes.
@@LJ-ht4zs In the Japan ep, when Lucy was dressed up as a Geisha, she looked like she had been crying :(. When Edie Adams was singing a love ballad, Lucy's face was sadly turned away, and Desi looked blank. :(
He was brilliant and never really recognized for his contributions.
Wow i didn't know this existed 😢.. They were meant for each other but couldn't hang on..Proud of him as Hispanic in Hollywood..Bravo Desi..RIP 🙏
Show after show ended their closing credits with.....
This has been a Desilu production and filmed at Desilu Studios. Desi as Ricky Ricardo was hilarious. He was the glue that kept the four together. His friendship with Fred was enjoyable to watch. His back and forth with Lucy and Ethel was comedy gold. A couple scenes I remember at the top of my head that stand out was Ricky and Fred spying on the girls through the heat vent and getting a face full of soot. Ricky helping Lucy at home, leaving the kitchen a disaster. The John Wayne Hollywood Walk of Fame cement signature fiasco. Lucy thinks Ricky wants to kill her. Lucy helping Ricky with his hair after Ricky thinks he's going bald.
I've seen several interviews with Lucy, and she was very deeply in love with Desi. He destroyed their marriage with cheating and booze
Don't think she ever got over him
I love Lucy was never just a show title
I use to watch, I love Lucy all the time!
Desi Arnaz never got the credit he deserved
But Lucy and some others DID give a lo of promotion to this fact. They knew and praised him.

Lucy was a class act!
I loved these two✨❤️💕
Absolutely love I Love Lucy. The whole cast . Every episode eas so funny and creative and how hard they all worked as a team...from the writers to the caneramen all the actors and actresses/ guest stars ❤
He had a great head of hair!
She was actually chewing on her bottom lip while the service was being conducted, in order to keep her breaking down and crying. You could also see it in her face (and forced words out of her mouth), of her trying to hold it together when she was being interviewed. Her face was actually twisted in agony.
I remember when Desi died. I'm a little surprised at two things watching this footage. The first is how sparsely attended his funeral seemed. One would think it would have been crowded. The second is how casually so many people are dressed for a funeral Mass. Even Lucy herself. Today, people don't care about their appearance and would show up in a tee shirt, jeans or shorts. But 40 years ago, dressing appropriately for occasions was not only still a thing, but it was expected.
I also can't believe how OLD Lucy looks here!
Lucy would pass 3 years later in April of 1989,, no doubt Desi's death affected her deeply and took a toll on her.
@@deborahstrickland4624 I don't think it did. When she was young, Lucy suffered a very bad case of rheumatic fever. One of the causes that led to the ruptured abdominal aneurysm, as well as the dissecting aortic aneurysm that she had been operated on for was cystic medial necrosis. It's listed on her death certificate. Rheumatic fever CAN cause that, especially over time as the artery walls weaken due to the fever.
Yes, that was the worst I ever saw her look - maybe it was the grief. Saw her in other things after Desi's passing and she looked far better. Right after this, she received the Kennedy Center Honors, and while sad, she did not look badly. Only when Robert Stack read the note that Desi had written about Lucy for the program, the last line of his note was "I Love Lucy"was never just a title. took everything for her not to break out in tears - one could see her anguish when this was read.
Never have i understood who lucy husband is, that 2nd husband. Still love Desi always.
What do you mean you "don't understand" who her second husband was? What's there to understand? Desi and Lucy both remarried after their divorce.
Agh♥️ I watch re runs often
That was their son in law, Larry Luckinbill, speaking about Lucy. That little clip seems to have been from her memorial.
No it's Desi's funeral.

Its funny I watched a bio on Lucy and she was getting interviewed and she was saying how lousy he was , and and a snake etc etc , but you knew that with all that toughness she loved him, and her daughter said that Lucy called and her daughter put the phone up to his ear and was saying I love you and he said it back and I believe it was actually their anniversary that day , anyway they said i loved you and I believe he passed the next day ..I know I may have got some things wrong but i got the jist of it 🤷🏻♀️
Later in a Barbra Walters interview she called Desi a lousy husband and a looser! 🚬🎩

They were always smoking. Even at the breakfast table they were both puffing away. Really disgusting.
Why did lucy married kept Ball her name and not used Arnaz
I think that's pretty common with celebrities.
The comedians now a days aren’t even entertaining’ they feel they have to bring swearing into their acts which is sad! I don’t go to comedy acts weather it be on a cruise ship or any where else. I don’t want to fill my mind with nonsense!

@@annodnosinut3485 There were times he was a great husband once in a while. Lucy chose to reminisce those memories in her statement.

Not much of a turnout. The church is half empty.
Lucy was reportedly unhappy how virtually no one in the industry besides Danny Thomas showed up for Mr. Arnaz's funeral. Even at her most bitter times over how their marriage melted down, she ALWAYS gave Desi credit for how the ENTIRE iconic show had been due to his hard work and innovation and was hurt when others attemptedto slander his intelligence.
@@wardarcade7452 one hears that he was quite disliked in Hollywood. Apparently, he wasn't a very nice man, probably quite bitter over how his career turned out post divorce.
