Awesome! We can't get away with flights like that on the mainland. I am glad I didn't sell the Disco Parrot sent me to replace my defective on I bought from buydig. My replacement is awesome. I sent it on a flight, 3 miles out to the Bay..then rth . Entire flight was flown by autopilot. Linear landing was perfect.
Wow that was neat. Sorry about the crash at the end, but it looks like it wasn't too bad and she will be flying again. Looking forward to your next video. Happy Flying
Dustin! What a great flight! Even though you had technical issues, I really enjoy your long range reviews! I have gained a lot of knowledge from all of your videos, and now do my own long range flights over the vast expanse of Kansas farmland! The farm houses are easy to avoid, and I have absolutely no WiFi or other interference. I have been able to fly my Mavic 2 Zoom and P4PV2.0 over unbelievable distances-it is so much fun! Keep your videos coming, and as long as you make them, I will be subscribed. Thanks again...😃🛩
That's really cool even though it malfunctioned. Glad it didn't get seriously damaged. I am scared to even take my Hubsan 501SS on a long range flight let alone what you are doing lol! Great video thanks Dustin.
Wow, I remember your first Parrot Disco video, who knew the modding scene for it would turn out to be so good. It's really an awesome platform, even with the issues that occurred on this flight.
You didn't kill a disco. I am very happy to tune it and take care of it. I am mine on the ground. Thanks for your taste of my disco fix patient. I like this drone, sometimes it doesn't feel bad it takes a landing, it has its soul :)
Oh no. After your reviews on this I bought a disco. Decided to land it on a house for some reason😱😱😱😱 had to get a new chuck but it was all ok. So glad you have dusted the cobwebs off you disco. Loved this video. Keep flying ....
I just stayed at the Westin Nanea right there a couple months ago. I have a Disco and thought about flying it from the same field. That would have been awesome to do some tandem Disco flying.
Always "pushing the envelope". Have to admit I was hoping you 'd make the entire trip out to that island and back .. that would've been epic. I've thought about making up some replacement batteries for my Black & Decker trimmer/blower/weedwhacker .. all use the same 18v 3A battery. In theory, making up a 4 cell 18650 pack would do it, but not sure about C ratings, etc. The OEM battery uses sub-C cells (NiMH). Glad your Disco survived the wreck .. should be no problem to get it back in the air. That 4LTG system seems to be a bit quirky and/or finicky. Be nice if that could be figured out. An enjoyable video, filled with excitement and drama. Cheers.
I just started flying my planes with Li-on batteries and I’m so impressed! I flew my AR wing yesterday for an hour on a 4s1p 3,5mah ! Now I’m not limited by battery so I can get things done😉
Still an amazing flight! I was hoping there were a few whales still lingering around the island. Man, I miss Maui! Good luck on the next attempt and keep up the amazing videos/reviews!
Nice flight. I grew up in Molokai so when I saw the headline it perked my interest to watch it. My first thought was did the drone really make to Molokai? Anyway, I applaud you for at least trying and staying calm when you lost connection. It's possible that when the drone was heading back it picked up a cell tower that had the best signal out over the water, i.e., it's a different cell tower that you initially connected to, and as it got closer to you, it maintained the connection the cell tower because it still had sufficient signal to maintain the connection although it was not the strongest signal. You should look into the possibility of the modem reconnecting to the strongest signal. Other than that, do what said about changing to wifi.
Will try again Ed with some changes. The modem should be auto switching to the cell tower with the strongest signal but it's hard to test. There is some code that can be install to see what's happening on a map for the connection I may look into 👍
Great and enjoyable video Dustin [as usual]. I wonder if Parrot will ever resurrect the disco platform. Lots of competition now from independent FC boards being compatible with Ardupilot .
Hi Dustin, you seem to become a regular featured person within our compilations and i guess that's a good thing...or is it a bad thing..either way we do hope you allow us to include this into our upcoming compilation. P.S. I do believe the mounted position of the usb modem affected the reception but sure glad that it only suffered minor damage 👍
There should be better instructions at the Disco4G UAVpal site I linked in description. There is also a Disco4G forum you should view on the SLACK platform for information.
The Disco is so cool ! The 360 footage should be great to see . I didn't see any whales but I thought I saw Sponge Bob floating around ! Nice flight Dustin ! 😁👍👍
I didn't see the two antennas that were attached at the top of the drone when your disco had done the Lanai excursion. Was their absence a contributing factor in losing the 4g signal? Anyways good try. Hope you try it again soon!
Hi Dustin, does the custom battery pack you made up (5 cells on the bottom & 4 on top) shown in this video fit under the standard Disco cover or does it require the special clear moulded cover? Many thanks again for always answering my questions 🙏. Cheers Mark.
Awesome mate. I managed to find a new Disco and have it on the way for my Christmas present to myself. I have ordered all the kit to do the 4G mod and have a local custom battery company building the same type of battery pack for me as you made (it was way cheaper than trying to import the Titan batteries into Aus with the new laws around shipping li-ion batteries). Thanks heaps for the such informative videos and links. Made it much easier to work all this out!
Too bad this flight had some gremlins, the last long rangers were amazing! I did manage to snap up a new Disco recently, just no backpack cases to be found. I have collected the 4G modem, Titan packs, and also the external flexi antennas. I see that you didn't use external antennas this flight, has it been determined that they are no longer needed? Seems like externals should help? Anyhow, I love your smooth style, even when stressed you seem calm. The only area I'd like to explore is backup manual control with a Std RC TX because the landings always seem like a crap shoot. I'm a long time RC pilot and would just like to land it on my terms if possible. Not sure if one can have 4G and Std RC RX installed as well. Anyhow, great job, I'm a fan. RemE
Different results in different areas and parts of the world for antennas it seems. Just wanted to try this one without. I'll try again with them on and maybe a different modem mount location 👍
Great vid as usual. Love them. Looking forward to see your expérimentations and results with C.H.U.C.K. transplantation on other flying machine. Keep your wonderfull job Dustin
Man let me tell you you sure are brave. I don’t know but even go let it go a quarter of a mile over the water let alone trying to do the island to island. Love your videos
Liked video. Any chance using the hotspot made the gps have trouble interacting with the map functions since your phone is nowhere near the plane? Just a thought.
I think I forgot to connect the iPad to my phone hotspot which was also the map issue. There was no data for the iPad to pull in the map layer. All the 4G mod does is dupe the Disco into thinking it's directly connected to the controller.
That’s great Dustin I bought a disco three weeks ago I still haven’t flown it yet I’ve got the bebop 2 how easy is the disco to fly I’ve never flown one before would you recommend any covering for the wings to increase strength
I love the long-range aspect of the Disco, but I'm so glad I bought my parrot Bebop 2 instead, the reason I purchased it is because of your video of the Bebop 2 flying out to that island and then along the shoreline, that range impressed me and I'm very happy with it, and also happy I can land it like a helicopter unlike the Disco in the tree!
I have this mod on my Bebop 2 and found that modem orientation plays a big role in how well it connects to 4g. Also, I am wondering if the clear canopy is acting as a greenhouse and raising the internal temperature. This could cause any processors to throttle a bit lowering bitrate perhaps?
Once in a while I come back and check this video again, it's so awesome. I'd be freaking tense on a flight like this but you remain calm :-) I wonder how hard it is to launch the Disco with these heavier batteries. I just got my li-ion 10000mah pack today and it seems so heavy, I wouldn't dare trying this if I hadn't seen other people using them with their Disco's. In this video you toss the plane in the air very casually though, so maybe I just worry too much.
My heart stopped when you lost connection. I am sure you can reach it next time, the connection wasn't great this time around. all your mods are amazing. Love the video.
Hey, would really be interested to know what practical flight times you get from this Li-Ion pack. Could you do another video where you do a proper endurance flight and record flight time? Much Disco love here :) I have two of them and am doing some fun stuff with them atm.
That is absolutely incredible. I'll have to build a pack myself. Got enough 18650's been pondering whether or not to invest in a spot welder to make packs. Think that'll be my next treat :)
This is using the 4G cell network. There was no way of telling how the data connection was for Disco out there in the ocean. A speed test on my phone where I was sitting however got 80Mbps down and 20 up
Hello Dustin, because your video has few years already the URL of items you posted are no longer availalble. Would you please post what kind of batteries you installed, more details regarding how you connected the modem to the Parrot Disco would be also much appreciated. Anyway, i find your video and tuturial very well made, thanks for sharing ! Cheers from France. :)
Hi Dustin I already bought my Parrot disk because of your videos: I want to ask you if I can fly the Parrot disk with an iPad that has 4g sim integrated instead of using it with a phone for the Glympse?
Ehy Dustin, I noticed on my disco when I had a similar issue that if you have the control data link and not the video, you need to switch back and forth from fpv to iPad a couple of times and then you will get also the video...
Dont supose your planning on any more long range flight videos. Love the long range stuff. Maybe Wailuku to Lahaina. Or Haleakala and back. Keep up the good work.
LOVE your Disco videos...so much so I just bought a Disco myself. Arrived yesterday (9/18/2019). First fixed wing UAS I've ever owned (but I do fly quadcopters). Given I'm a first time fixed wing flyer I could really use some input from an experienced flyer. Here are some question I'm hoping you can address: * How large of a field (minimum & ideal) do you recommend when making your maiden flight and landing of the Disco? (e.g., 100 X 100 yds? 200 X 200 yds?, bigger? I'm especially concerned about the landing part. Obviously would be better but I'm trying to establish the "safe" minimum size. I'm assuming that I should try and land the Disco into the wind? So maybe the distance into the wind is the most critical dimension since presumably you will be taking off and landing into the wind....since I live near the Ocean and the wind is pretty consistent maybe the minimum field area would be more of a rectangle vs a square. * How accurate is the automated landing feature? Margin of error? (e.g., lands consistentlywithin 10 ft of your GPS "Home Point", 50 ft?, 100 ft?, etc.). And how consistent is that landing accuracy (e.g., "very consistent..within 10%", "varies significantly (50%) based on wind conditions", "Be prepared to take manual control because it could be off by 100% or more even in the best of conditions", etc.). Any guidance would be helpful. * Do you recommend doing an automated landing on my first flight or do suggest I try and land it manually? Do you recommend a linear landing or a circle landing? (I think there are two automated landing options, right?) How much space around your "home point" landing spot do you need to do a circle landing? (100yds on all sides to allow for the circles, 200yds, etc.). In your Molokini video you said you were "locked out" when the Disco entered it's automated circle landing mode...is that in fact the case? Still the case? * It's hard to find a large grass landing area (period) in my area (SD CA) much less finding one that doesn't have obstacles at all ends of the field (e.g. tall trees, stadium light polls, power lines, etc). With that I'm mind I'm wondering how steep of a climb (qualitatively speaking -- e.g., Very, Fairly, Not so steep, etc) the Disco can make if you had to abort a landing attempt and then try and clear a 40ft tree at the end of the flying area. How many feet/yds would you need to clear a 40ft tree if you were near ground level (e.g., 5 ft.) * Obviously the best surface for landing would be grass, what are your thoughts about landing in loose fine-grain gravel? (e.g., "wouldn't be prudent, it's going to chew up the bottom and you risk camera damage", "probably ok if you had to but you do risk damaging (scratching) the camera lens ", "shouldn't be a problem the Parrot is as tough as nails as long as you don't hit any rocks, etc.). * Are there any mods/accessories you would recommend adding/applying to the Disco right out the box to prolong it's life (e.g., add some type of coating to the bottom to protect it, tape, lens guard, etc., etc.) Sorry I know there are a lot of questions here but I think any new pilot would benefit from your answers on these topics, so you'd be helping many new pilots. Cheers. Long live the Disco ;-)...even if it has been pulled from production.
Hey Jet, If you launch in the middle of a 50 yard clearing you should be ok if you need to auto circle land. If your going to land on anything but grass get skid plates and a camera ring guard (either 3d print or buy) and put them on immediately. Always launch and land against the wind. I'd fly it in as low as you safely can and just hit landing giving yourself a good runway. You can cancel landing now by pressing landing button or pulling up on stick. Have a blast! 🙈👍
@@DustinDunnill Jet Martin 2 minutes ago @Dustin Dunnill Awesome...thanks SO MUCH for replying....and thanks for the recommendations. Can't wait to fly my Disco...although I am a bit nervous about it...biggest concern is the landing accuracy part. It's hard to find a nice grassy area here much less one that you can get to yourself. My luck I'd take off and then a kid's soccer team would show up while I'm in mid-flight. Maybe I'll find that the landing accuracy is better than I think? I've just seen several videos where when in manual mode the drone landed 50+ feet away from their intended landing point...and the pilot had multiple flights under their belt.
@@DustinDunnill Was wondering what you thought about this camera guard ( www.thingiverse.com/thing:3037963 ). It seems to offer better protection then the other small ring type guards....it also acts as a partial skid pad. Here is another camera guard alternative ( www.thingiverse.com/thing:2963604 ). Evidently the second one requires that you cutout a lens filter and I think it goes over the Disco lens...like a second layer. Which one do you think wold provide better protection for the camera/lens?
@@DustinDunnill Thx for the reply...I like the design too BUT there are 2 downsides I can see to it vs the 2nd one: #1: It uses the same screw hole to attach it that other "full length" 3D skid pads use. So that could prevent you from using other full body length 3D printed skid pads..unless you just want to tape it down to the body; #2: Unlike the second design option this one doesn't offer any way to "directly" protect the lens (i.e., lens cover) if you were to take a "direct pinpointed" hit to the lens (e.g., from a tree limb) in which case the lens could be scratched. Maybe there is a way to augment the design to include a lens cover to give you that direct protection.
I want to buy a Disco and make this mod to it... I was trying to access that link for the clear canopy but it didn't let me see it nor click on it other that to add to cart...
Brilliant flight video buddy. Love everything you do with the Disco! Cool cover mate. I've crashed mine a few times, and when it's in landing mode will turn, but for some reason won't pull up.... Your like aahh lol. Glad she's okay and look forward to seeing your next video. Cheers :)
I absolutely love your long range disco videos. Too bad the connection was acting up. Keep up the great videos.
Finally another Disco video!! well done!
The music is really catchy. I love it. The Parrot Disco videos are my favourite!
Hey I'm your big fan all the way from Zimbabwe (Africa) keep up the great work, I enjoy them
10:45 Just as you asked if we see any Wales you can see one in the middle left
Good observation! I'll have to take another look 👍
Wow that was neat. Sorry about the crash at the end, but it looks like it wasn't too bad and she will be flying again. Looking forward to your next video. Happy Flying
these long away flights make us nervous as well for you!!!! You are the man
Man I just live for these long range attempts!!!!! Literally hanging on the edge watching!!! Cheers!!!
You didn't kill a disco. I am very happy to tune it and take care of it. I am mine on the ground. Thanks for your taste of my disco fix patient. I like this drone, sometimes it doesn't feel bad it takes a landing, it has its soul :)
Any plans to add external antennas to the 4G modem? Probably a more secure connection especially for inter island coverage.
I had 2 wip antennas on when I flew to Lana'i. I'll try this flight again with them on.
Oh no. After your reviews on this I bought a disco. Decided to land it on a house for some reason😱😱😱😱 had to get a new chuck but it was all ok. So glad you have dusted the cobwebs off you disco. Loved this video. Keep flying ....
Same, bought one because of DD reviews, landed 5m AGL into a tree first flight, it needs more landing space than my local park! Hot glue...
😂😮🍻
I think you should rename your channel to *Dustin Disco*
Absolutely love your videos
👍🏻
I just stayed at the Westin Nanea right there a couple months ago. I have a Disco and thought about flying it from the same field. That would have been awesome to do some tandem Disco flying.
Nice. Hope you had a good Vaca here 👍
Always "pushing the envelope". Cheers.
Great test Dustin. Can't wait for the 360 degree one.
I just started flying my planes with Li-on batteries and I’m so impressed! I flew my AR wing yesterday for an hour on a 4s1p 3,5mah ! Now I’m not limited by battery so I can get things done😉
Love the disco videos keep it up 🤪
No need to apologise! Great flight man. Minus the slight damage of course lol
At 10:46 I spotted a small whale & then 2 or 3 more right after that.
Longboard Louie 12:17 too
Still an amazing flight! I was hoping there were a few whales still lingering around the island. Man, I miss Maui! Good luck on the next attempt and keep up the amazing videos/reviews!
Also, who's singing this version of "Cool Down"?
I wonder if you can wire in another small fan on the electronics compartment . Love the song played.
Nice flight. I grew up in Molokai so when I saw the headline it perked my interest to watch it. My first thought was did the drone really make to Molokai? I hope the modem does not interfere with the GPS or Chuck unit being closer with that canopy
Great and enjoyable video Dustin [as usual]. I wonder if Parrot will ever resurrect the disco platform. Lots of competition now from independent FC boards being compatible with Ardupilot .
Hey Dustin when are you going to review the new mavic mini ??
Dunstin your such a chilled guy.. Love watching your videos, but I'd love to see a crash were the audio is bleeped. Nice video as usual.
Dustin can you please post a tutorial on changing the chuck battery parameters??? What values did you use???
I wonder how hot the chuck and modem etc gets with the plastic cover compared to a foam cover. I would bet alot hotter.
I love your disco videos ! Really cool modifications
Hello bro love your long range disco videos thank you so much..
This long flights are awesome. Who needs the real planes. ;)
Looks like you hit Molokai’s defensive shield!
Are you going to try it again? You were so close!!!
Yes indeed. A few adjustments and I think I can make it 👍
Hi Dustin, you seem to become a regular featured person within our compilations and i guess that's a good thing...or is it a bad thing..either way we do hope you allow us to include this into our upcoming compilation.
P.S. I do believe the mounted position of the usb modem affected the reception but sure glad that it only suffered minor damage 👍
You bet. The crash in the end of the flight later in the video is better and includes a clip of the Disco view then external view 👍
When you installed the new Li-ion batteries, did you have to do any configuration in parameters.cfg?
Yes, there is a parameter change to account for the different voltage drop 🍻
@@DustinDunnill I'm already trying to adjust everything correctly. The app percentage is still not equal to the cell meter percentage.
There should be better instructions at the Disco4G UAVpal site I linked in description. There is also a Disco4G forum you should view on the SLACK platform for information.
@@DustinDunnill I didn't know they had that information. I'll go check it out. Thank you.
nice gear.. maybe external antennas for the 4G dongle would help.. like your other video to Lanai ?
The Disco is so cool ! The 360 footage should be great to see . I didn't see any whales but I thought I saw Sponge Bob floating around ! Nice flight Dustin ! 😁👍👍
Another epic long range mission!
I didn't see the two antennas that were attached at the top of the drone when your disco had done the Lanai excursion. Was their absence a contributing factor in losing the 4g signal? Anyways good try. Hope you try it again soon!
It's been said they don't make much difference and I wanted to try without them. I'll try with them next time 👍
Just WOW.. From Quebec, Canada.
Hi Dustin , great flight, BOSS.
Hi Dustin, does the custom battery pack you made up (5 cells on the bottom & 4 on top) shown in this video fit under the standard Disco cover or does it require the special clear moulded cover? Many thanks again for always answering my questions 🙏. Cheers Mark.
Yes it fits fine with standard cover but you need to cut some foam of coarse to fit 👍
Awesome mate. I managed to find a new Disco and have it on the way for my Christmas present to myself. custom build a wing for $300
Bnf 1.2m Opterra is about 600 bucks cheaper, comes with flight controller GPS and all kinds of features.
They're on sale for really cheap once in a while. Keep looking!

You can add a small antenna on the modem. Just open the modem shell than you will find a antenna connector.
There are 2 antenna ports on side of modem

WOW AMAZING VIDEO VERY EDUCATIONAL 👌👌👌👌
Maybe greenhouse effect due to the clear canopy and black interior made it overheat.

That's a cool fun time brother! Mucho peace! Sorry about the crash! Fixable right?
Already repaired 👍
Hi Dustin I already bought my Parrot disk because of your videos: I want to ask you if I can fly the Parrot disk with an iPad that has 4g sim integrated instead of using it with a phone for the Glympse?
Yes but skycontroller will need to hotspot off of it as well.
Great video. Thank you! I'm watching from Korea and it makes me nervous as well.
Download the maps pre-flight for offline use, as you are using 4g to control the aircraft
I usually connect my tablet to the phone wifi hotspot as well but spaced out in this one. Yes, preload is an option also 👍
Ehy Dustin, I noticed on my disco when I had a similar issue that if you have the control data link and not the video, you need to switch back and forth from fpv to iPad a couple of times and then you will get also the video...
Yes, tried that alot on this flight. The issue was something else like over heating modem, placement or data.
Totally awesome!
@Dustin Dunnill
I'm late to the game
What is the alternative to the parrot DISCO in 2021
Nothing really quite as complete as the Disco. I'll be testing a new VTOL wing similar to this in the coming weeks 🍻
@@DustinDunnill gotcha, I love the lifting body shape vs. a quad.
Will continue to watch your tests. thanks for the grt vids.
Here are some question I'm hoping you can address:
* How large of a field (minimum & ideal) do you recommend when making your maiden flight and landing of the Disco?
How many feet/yds would you need to clear a 40ft tree if you were near ground level (e.g., 5 ft.)
* Obviously the best surface for landing would be grass, what are your thoughts about landing in loose fine-grain gravel? (e.g., "wouldn't be prudent, it's going to chew up the bottom and you risk camera damage", "probably ok if you had to but you do risk damaging (scratching) the camera lens ", "shouldn't be a problem the Parrot is as tough as nails as long as you don't hit any rocks, etc.).
* Are there any mods/accessories you would recommend adding/applying to the Disco right out the box to prolong it's life (e.g., add some type of coating to the bottom to protect it, tape, lens guard, etc., etc.)
Sorry I know there are a lot of questions here but I think any new pilot would benefit from your answers on these topics, so you'd be helping many new pilots.
Cheers. Long live the Disco ;-)...even if it has been pulled from production.
Hey Jet,
If you launch in the middle of a 50 yard clearing you should be ok if you need to auto circle land.

@Dustin Dunnill Awesome...thanks SO MUCH for replying....and thanks for the recommendations.
I like the first one 👌
@@DustinDunnill Thx for the reply...I like the design too BUT there are 2 downsides I can see to it vs the 2nd one:
#1: It uses the same screw hole to attach it that other "full length" 3D skid pads use. So that could prevent you from using other full body length 3D printed skid pads..unless you just want to tape it down to the body;
#2: Unlike the second design option this one doesn't offer any way to "directly" protect the lens (i.e., lens cover) if you were to take a "direct pinpointed" hit to the lens (e.g., from a tree limb) in which case the lens could be scratched.
Cheers :)
That’s pretty cool looking. What are these classified as, is it a drone? Thx
I'd say Smart plane or D-wing drone
