      Start to focus on scales and their relation to chords. The most common one is major or minor pentatonic scale. You will learn to see that the shape of the chords are related to the scale.

    This has been an issue for me. I can come up with solo pieces in my head; however, when I would play them out on the piano, I would miss notes that were in my head and hit the wrong ones. This always threw me off. This technique seems to be a way to improve this. Very much appreciated!

    • @b_markovic

      Actually, people will naturally sing in pentatonic scales. Majority of old folk music are pentatonic tunes, all around the world. Then, this being about jazz, you'd add the blue notes. Essentially, knowing these theory "tricks" will help in translating the melody in your head into notes, you'll make less mistakes and the mistakes you do make will sound more acceptable within the constraints of the piece.

    Great advice if you know how to distinguish notes simply through audio queues, but unfortunately this just didn’t work for me. I don’t perfectly know what each note sounds like so when humming a tune I have no idea how to convert that into notes on a keyboard, even after drilling scales & chords into my skull for 3 years. Good video but you’re expected to be able to hear notes beforehand.

    I'm absolutely loving your videos because they are structured in a way that makes good sense to me. I have a question about improvisation that you did not mention. When a person does a solo/improvisation in a band, does the improvisation have to be connected or sound in any way like the original melody when it is your turn to improvise within the band? Or do you just have to use some of the same chord progressions of the original melody? I hope this makes sense.

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  7 лет назад

      The original melody is usually used as a basis for building a solo and a source of ideas.

      Hmm start by playing chords in C major, since it's all white keys, and start pressing on notes until what you sing and what you hear are the same. Just practise and practise. Another thing you could do would be to train your ear, like listen to videos that play notes and ask you to identify them, you'll easily be able to play them, as you slowly train your ear. Even I get stuck with this however after playing for some years, I can get a gist of what the keys might be playing which notes.

    Great tips and thank you. However, what is your philosophy of doing an improv solo over a jazz standard as opposed to just a made up chord progression? In that situation you are playing specific chords in the left hand (usually) so how do you develop the right hand hand solo and especially runs in the right hand without sounding to scale like?

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  6 лет назад +1

      This video's philosophy is directly applicable to jazz standards. Learn to improvise singing, and then play what you sing. This will ensure you're not adhering to scales to licks or muscle-memory.

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  5 лет назад +3

      You must first train your ear to be able to actually play a melody you sing. Forget about doing things in real time when you start out.

    @gigachadgaming1551 5 месяцев назад

    I’m absolutely not classically trained. You probably shouldn’t listen to this if you have any sort of proficiency with the piano, but using these couple rules I have found people asking “what song is that?” even though I’ve just been improving.
    1: one hand plays lower notes, other hand plays higher notes.
    2. Lower notes are “chords.” And by chords, I mean you play keys at the same time and hold them there for a long time. Rule of thumb, never play keys that are next to each other. That, I’ve found, naturally makes a positive sounding chord.
    3. The higher hand goes utterly ham, but only playing single notes. Like, one key then rapidly switch to the next and do this like 6/a dozen times. You do this in between the times you hit the lower chords
    4: repeat.
    If you have more piano knowledge, you can probably ensure that you only play happy sounding chords.
    Sorry if I’ve made an absolute mockery of pianocraft 😔

    What do I do if I don't know what to play in my left hand? Do I need to memorize all the chords first?

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  3 года назад +1

      Yes.
      Pick a "real book" song, memorize the left hand, and then focus on the right hand improvisation.
      With time, you will learn how to automatically pick left hand chord voicings that sound pleasing.

      @@MangoldProject Thank you so much, I only ever learned how to play the piano by reading sheet music. Now I'm trying to learn how to play without sheets but it's very difficult...

      I don't have "favorite keyboard players", but just musicians. A lot of my playing is inspired actually by non-keyboard/piano players, including bassists, guitarists, drummers, ethnic instruments, etc ... As far as piano goes, my #1 hero though is Lyle Mays. Many piano players I think are amazing often play boring music and vice versa. One of my favorite trios is Uzeb which actually has NO keyboard player in it :) (but Michel Cusson the guitar player uses MIDI guitar to play keyboard parts, so they're cheating a bit ... ) So it's all over the place. Who determines who you should listen to is YOU because only you know who you want to sound like!

    hey l have learnt a lot from your tutorials. I am making beats now.. I have a lot of chord progressions that I use on the piano .... I would like to know how to compliment my chords with the guitar.. you can you the piano to explain what a guitarist might play while the piano player is playing.

      I have a video on playing together with a guitar player. This is a pretty huge topic and I'm not sure I'm very qualified to answer your question with specifics. Perhaps a guitar teacher might?

    Hey mangold!! This video was educational n i will work on it.. But i just have a question... As we know most of the songs have same kind of chords progression but how we can play piano in a differnt way everytime with the same chords???

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  8 лет назад

      That's not an easy question to answer. You're basically asking how can we make a chord progression sound "good" or "interesting" instead of playing the old boring textbook voicings every time. If you have 1-2 years to spare I can answer that, sort of :). Or, you could go through the many videos on my channel, which contain many tips and tricks on chord voicings and will get you started in the right direction.

      you can use patterns or arpeggios as mangold did in some videos or u can use different voicings as mangold referred to. you can inspire and see what other composers do in the music style that u prefer and u want to compose

      Of course not, go right ahead. It's not "my" chord progression. It's a 1-6-2-5, as basic as it gets.
