    I was in mourning back in November 2014 when my dog Princess suddenly passed away. I remember just going through RUclips and I came across this video. For some reason the song she sang "Till After The Holidays" seem like it was something I was saying in my head after my dog died "why couldn't you wait til after XMas"! It's was like that song haunted me for a while. Fast forward 7 years later, it still haunts me in a good way, I still miss my dog yet I have more strength to move on than 7 years ago.

      Streisand might have a legitimate claim to this title! It's too bad Garland died too soon! It remains to be seen how often they would have appeared together! Her duet with Streisand on her short lived Television series was the best duet she ever performed!

      She may be I'll mannered, but I'd give the nod of best singer ever to Barbra Streisand! When she appeared on Garland's show and sang a duet with her, I honestly believe that Garland was more in awe of Streisand than any other singer she sang with!

    • @johndoe6263
      @johndoe6263 2 года назад +4

      @@arthurgearheard4701 Can't agree with that. Too much ego in so much of her work. Garland was the exact opposite. These two singers who are so often compared are in fact polar opposites. Garland was all about making an emotional connection with the audience and her best work does that to an extraordinary degree. Garland is unanimously accepted as one of the greatest film stars and concert givers of all time, Streisand is neither.
      As for Garland being in awe of Streisand - you must be joking! She performed, unforgettably, and more that held her own with the greatest of the great -Astaire, Kelly, Crosby and Sinatra among them. Since you mention the duet with Streisand (I assume you are referring to the "Happy" duet) it shows starkly the difference between them. Garland is all about connecting with the audience, Streisand barely looks at them.

    I will never forget hearing this performance at the time when I lost my beloved little boy. It felt as though my heart had been torn out of my chest. But I always keep in mind, as the lyric states, that someday, I will reach the sky, and my shattered heart will be mended, once again. I have leaned on this performance for courage to face the days, months, and years I have been forced to face without my child in my arms, with love and appreciation for the magical lady whose voice has the quality of heartbreak-both ours, and hers.

    I'm not a music critic or historical commentator, but listen to Judy start Till After The Holidays. She uses the warmth of her voice to create the lyric, but she's also clearly aware that she can't hit those crescendos without loosing her footing and she demurs and in doing so heightens the emotional text of the song while keeping control of her vocals. Brilliance. Its not about weakened vocal ability, its about contribution and glorying in the moment.

    When you got it, you GOT it! ❤ Judy’s voice was wonderful here and when she was given the rest she needed, her performances were outstanding! The powers that be, during her career and who treated her like she was a commodity, should have never driven her so hard. Greed is like a poison and left her broke because of the mishandling of her career and finances. The Greatest Entertainer that ever lived, died sick and broke. My heart breaks for her and the struggles she endured during her all too brief life. God bless your soul, dear lady. Your legacy is unmatched and your fans still love and adore you. If she only knew that even over half century since her passing, that her legacy and immense talent, is garnering more and more fans. My favorite singer ever!

    Frail, but what a magnificent singer. Her phrasing and tone are still absolutely present, even though the voice was frayed at the edges by then. Her ability to communicate a song with unparalleled charisma remains beautifully intact. It puts the lie to the myth that her very final years were disastrous in terms of her talent. She demonstrated many, many outstanding performances in those last three years of life. Many legitimate triumphs on stage, though she was living on borrowed time. THIS is exquisite singing, the way songs can be sung by greats even when past their prime.

    I have to say Mario Cantone introduced me to Judy Garland during his "Laugh Whore" special. After that masterpiece of comedy I watched most of the 15 minute concerts and the '63 and '64 TV show. But this. "After the Holidays" is so hauntingly beautiful. Is it wrong that this 52 year old man's eyes started to leak??? I can only imagine what she is thinking about. When Judy sings and you "FEEL" what she is singing about, that is a sign of a great singer. Judy was one of the Very Best!!!

      They will experience magic in performers of THEIR generations, as emotions are expressed differently as time marches on. For this reason, younger generations may not fully appreciate the legendary performers WE have come to love and cherish, just as we may not feel the same about performers of subsequent generations. But that’s OK-I think it’s the way it’s meant to be. I’m sure younger generations will appreciate this someday when they awake to find that they have become the old farts of THEIR generations….lol 😊

    Thank You for posting this -- much appreciated. I remember this vividly and was relieved that, at this point in time, she looked SO much better than she had on other recent talk shows -- case in point, The Dick Cavett Show taped around this time (merely MY opinion). She looked far more like her self here -- by a mile. There were also instances when her voice was in far better shape than this, at this point in time -- case in point, the Harold Arlen Tribute at Lincoln Center just approximately one month prior to this on November 17 1968 (merely MY opinion, mind you) . . . Yet, frankly, every performance of hers was and still IS magic.

    I always liked "It's all for You". Johnny Meyer wrote this song. However, Mort Lindsey wrote the arrangement and orchestration for Judy for this TV appearance. Books and articles have stated that Judy's appearance was a disaster. This is not true. She looks lovely and performed this song well. Judy came off well. She never complained about anything. She was a charming guest. Her life at this time was very hard financially and emotionally. You'd never guess it. I never liked the "After the Holidays" song. She did Johnny Meyer a big favor by doing his songs but this song stinks. Johnny Meyer had talent. Unfortunately for him, he had a wealthy well to do family. He thought he was going to be the next Cole Porter. All Johnny's peers ( like Joan Rivers) auditioned and performed and made it happen). Johnny, hung out, in his parent's apartment and went nowhere. Judy's only flub was stating that she was going to appear at "The Town and Country" (where she had appeared in the 1950s). She got mixed up. She was booked in London to appear at the Talk of the Town.

    She was still so professional even though she was drugged up to the eyeballs. Thank you Judy Garland for making my childhood Christmases magical, when I watched The Wizard of Oz.

    Great version! Thanks for posting, although the text is really distracting. Would be even more wonderful without that, although I do understand why it was added.

    Thank you so much for posting the gem like this one. Love Judy !!! Only Mr. Carson seems not to have been much impressed. Never mind... the guy went down into history unnoticed anyway....
