  • With Claudine Gay stepping down from her role as president of Harvard University, she becomes the shortest-tenured president in the school's history. After a month of controversy, what should Gay and Harvard have done differently to prevent this public relations nightmare? Two experts in the field, Jacquetta Van Zandt, host of the Politics and Prosecco videocast, and Colette Phillips, president and CEO of Collette Phillips Communication, weigh in.

@GBHNews - Harvard's conduct was a disgrace! Claudine Gay should NEVER have been appointed! She was a mediocrity and an insult to the many real African American scholars out there. Gay was merely a token hire. We can only hope and pray that her resignation is the beginning of the dismantling of the entire corrupt DEI edifice. It's a fraud!

Background and back story is all fine and well, but I would have liked to hear more in depth discussion about her plagiarism allegations. I would have liked these ladies to acknowledge the seriousness of plagiarism and then get into the specifics of Dr. Gay’s paper and does it warrant her resignation? I think arguing anything before deconstructing her announced reasons for resignation is moot. She is leader of an academic institution and the bedrock of legitimacy and respect for academic institutions are the papers written by their academics. How does it appear if the very leader that espouses the value of academic pursuits and integrity is discovered to be a plagiarist? This panel dismissed the plagiarism charge as a witch-hunt tool and didn’t delve on this issue at all, sadly.

I was extremely disappointed that Gay wasn't fit to be president of Harvard because I want very much to see a person of color in that position. However, her repeated lifting of another scholar's boilerplate technical language indicates that she is not an original thinker, and this is what she showed before congress. I am no fan of Elise Stefanik in any way, but Harvard University is a world-class institution and must be led by a world-class mind. Claudine Gay doesn't have a world-class brilliance that can represent US intellect on the international stage. We need to stop throwing down the racism card and equip our American citizens of color to compete with the most brilliant of other countries instead of giving them the half-hearted, half-baked chance that affirmative action did. Affirmative action was something tossed out to make white people feel less guilty about white privilege, not something to equip Americans of color to compete on an equal playing field. Time to start treating them like their potential is as great as white people's and give them the tools to develop it from early childhood so they don't need quotas to get into a prestigious university or professional position.

@@kc66 Carol Swain's idea that all you need is a can-do attitude is correct, but it's nearly impossible to have that can-do attitude if forced labor, rape, lynching, red-lining, police brutality, mass incarceration, etc., has been forced on your family's history to be passed down as generational trauma. Swain might well come from a family of free blacks and might not be dealing with this. So, yeah. Affirmative action did nothing to address the trauma all those horrors generate. It just shoved mediocre people into positions beyond their abilities. It did nothing to prepare talent of color to be extraordinary. We'll probably never know how much talent of color was lost to gangs, drugs or incarceration. Swain needs to stop being so simplistic.

why was the president of Harvard allowed to get away with plagiarism? Most students at Harvard would be crucified if they were caught plagiarizing. Heck, there are high schools held to a higher standard. Why is it racist to have standards? Most people would not be opposed to fire any president of a university if they plagiarized, regardless of their race or ethnicity. It's common sense. Just pretend you didn't know the race of Claudine Gay. Would you be opposed to her being fired if you found out she plagiarized on 50 different occasions?
