Love this concept, good quality overall 👍🏻 I drove the cupra 290 estate, and tbh the diff could not keep up with the power, Golf R estate is the best choice he could ever make. I see it like a cheap RS6... Tuning potential is REAL with the Golf R.
Great video. Must be the only video on youtube where the owner and his mates are not stuck up their own arse's and not laughing all the time. Nice one lads, brilliant. Proper blokes.
I have the hatch with the dynamic chassis control. I bought the car with 18s and drove 400 miles home on them. Then I changed to the 19 Pretoria wheels. The ride is far far better on the 19s! Seriously it was like I had flat tyres, I had to check I still had 38psi in
So jelly ... Wish the states could get a few of these ... I'm happy I have the golf varient awd 6speed .. but it's gonna become my second project car .. to make it how I want it .. and from the looks of it vw already made it .. the variant r is basically 97% the way I want it
Great review lads, had mine for three months now, despite being the Lapiz Blue colour, noone knows what it is really. "What you getting?"... "Golf Estate"... played that card at work! I've only seen one other on the road, it was white and we gave each other the nod and treated each other to a DSG Fart 👌 keep it up!
TheSUPERCARDRIVER cheers, it's a great car that in estate form has very little competition, focus st and Leon cupra aside, but both of them are down on power and fwd. very much the perfect fun sleeper
Twentymacc VW saw the error on their ways, the updated version of the R estate comes with LED rear lights. Although nothing changed on the exhaust unfortunately!
I'm so jelly! I have the MK VI R in white and the MK VII R in Tornado Red but I would die for the Golf R Estate. Sadly we Americans don't get wagons. Absolutely love the panoramic sun roof.
69mrbrightside691 I would say that from an overall perspective that the 7 is better in every subjective category but the 6 is more fun to drive. This could also be because the 6 only came in manual and my 7 is a DSG. Also the 6 doesn't have DCC and the front diff isn't as clever so you have to drive it a bit differently on technical roads. That having been said, the 7 feels more like a luxury car or a GT car. The new MQB chassis is a better layout and it becomes apparent from the time you sit in it. In the 6 I had to have the seat pushed all the way up in order to drive but on the 7 I'm back a few inches back which allows me to put the tilt steering wheel in a position I can see the top of my speed and tachometer dials. Truth is you can't go wrong with either. I guess in the end my only knock on the 7 is it's a wee bit too easy to drive fast whereas the 6 feels more raw and involved.
Not really. While the HP increase is almost 40, the real number the matters in acceleration is TQ and that's only up 20. I've noticed where the power difference is most notable is high speed passing. If I down shift and smash the long skinny pedal on the right, I can go from 35 mph onto an entrance ramp on the HWY and be doing 85 to get into any traffic gap I want in a blink. The big problem that the MK VI R has is the pedal configuration for it's manual. Because of the way the pedals are set up heal and toe work is virtually impossible.
I had the old Audi TTS which was basically the same engine as the MKVI R with an extra 7 hp in the UK, and lighter than the Golf. I now have a MK VII R Estate, and I would say stock for stock the engine in the Golf R feels significantly quicker, despite weighing an extra 100kg than than TTS especially above about 4k revs where the gap in HP starts to be felt.
Picked up a red Golf R about a month ago and I was also told that it doesn't need any running in, just "drive it like you normally would from the moment you start it up" meaning don't even bother waiting for the temps to heat up from first start
Germaine Muller have you followed their advice?! Not sure I would be... Didn't realise VW now make engines that can keep oil at operating temperature when the engines off! Ha
Guys That Drive haha you and me both! Mine's generally warmed up by the time I can push it hard. I didn't bother with the running in period too much either. I heard the same stuff from about three or four dealerships so figured they can't be wrong. Was also told the same by a 25+ year VW tech who didn't bother with the running in period on his GTI 40th edition
Fantastic video! I love the pano sunroof in these Golf R Estates. My Golf R in Canada doesn't even have a standard sunroof. BTW, props for that Westbeach jacket, they are/were based in my hometown of Vancouver, Canada :)
Zeddy DAN thanks man, although this wasn't meant to be particularly in depth as Chris had literally only just got it. We'll film a more detailed owners review soon now that he's had the car for about 6 months
I've noticed the single outlets on the exhaust give it more of a crack like the gti. Where as the R hatches sound more like a duck with all outlets open. lol. Wonder if anyone has connected /modded the fake tips up at all to be open...
I have one of these, picked it up September mine came with Sat Nav as standard. As for the fake exhaust tips it is the only thing I dislike about it, the facelift model has actual exhaust tips so VW must have realised there mistakes
When bought last car was a decision between Golf R estate or M135i. Always been a VW person. Bought the M135i and over the last few months I am thinking that made wrong decision and really should have gone with the golf. Watching this makes me realise that in the next few months I will be chopping the BMW in for a Golf R estate. Think it’s the sort of sleeper think. Looks can be deceiving.
Hi Guys... nice video and good to see your opinion. Interesting about the Exhaust. Just a query, this is technically a 2016 Model correct ? The Golf R Mk 7... is that right ? Sorry, just a little confused. In Australia, we only got the Estate (Wagon) in 2016, (200 in total), so I think that is a Mk 6... just drove a Used one and what a lovely car, the DSG 'Fart' as it is correctly termed and in my opinion, just needs a slightly bigger exhaust to make it a bit deeper/louder. Drove a Stage 1 Tuned Golf R (Hatch) and what a weapon, imagine it with a bigger Airbox, Exhaust and Intercooler, so no doubt the Estate would be the same. Anyway, I am hoping to step up from my Stage 2 Polo GTI (2013) and just drove the Passat 206 Estate today (Golf R Driveline) which was very nice but too civilised. I believe the Golf R Estate 7.5, will have revised styling and LED Tailights but no confirmation that it will even make an appearance in Australia. Hope you can respond... cheers if you do.
Hi Stephen - you are correct this is a 2016 Mk 7 model registered towards the end of 2016 but before they had announced they were updating it for 2017. Should probably change the title to reflect this! Its a really excellent car that is quite hard to beat at that price range in estate form, just a bit of a shame about the fake exhaust tips! Enjoy if you do get one!
Guys That Drive cheers guys... lets see of I can find a second hand one out of the 200 already here in Oz... or the new version comes here. No hope of a discount from what I can see though.
I thought a golf 7 r has exhaust flaps so when in eco mode etc the valves are closed i.e only 2 pipes working and when the car is in race the flaps open using all 4 pipes. I think thats why you see alot of golf r's and S3's with 2 dirty pipes because most of the time they dont have it in race mode
showroom window sticker price this car was just over £40k so take 25% off, there's deals to be done on these Golf R estates! Still a lot of money but for a new car with most options it was a decent deal.
Was $64k AUD over here in Australia... no Options Fitted on the Road. That is 40k Pound, with a Sunroof nearly $3.5k AUD more (over 2k Pound) ... and you WOULD never get a 25% discount... not ever... sold the whole allocation (200) before they even arrived. So, anyone in the UK want to store one (that I buy at 20% off) for me for a year, so I can import it over here ?
of course you could, probably easier to replace the entire rear muffler though with a more flowing unit... this one goes back on itself a bit so is probably restrictive and not really required on a Turbo Vehicle. Milltek make 2 versions (Reasonated and Not) without Tips... other brands no doubt available. www.hp.net.au/hp/index.php/products/vehicles/vw/48/125/golf/2013-on-5g,-mk7/milltek-cat-back-exhaust-system-golf-r-wagon,-non-resonated,-no-tips-40-detail
Glad you stayed for all 12.43! this was just a first impressions vid really. We will do a proper review of the Golf R with Chris once he has had the car a bit longer
According to evo the ea888 in the golf r has a different cylinder head, different injectors, slightly bigger turbo and different pistons. Didn't realise it had that many modifications if I'm honest but certainly got more than just a tune
The guy at vw was probably correct They also told me that my gti didn't need any break-ins at all and the reason for that was because the engine actually comes broken-in already from the factory
|〉 TARIQ k. 〈 they may well "bed it in" but a few hours of the engine being run on a test bed isn't as through as fully bedding in the cylinders over a 1000 miles or so. It doesn't hurt it to run it in properly
Golf R estate - I have only three things i can say about this car .... no, no and no again - how can a manufactuer be able to create a car as amazing as the R and then think they need an estate version. The estate car is the bastian of the the retired and of the family man - If you want an R just get a divorce and drive one - dont disrespect your self by having the estate version!
but surely that is exactly the point of the R estate?! Built for someone that wants 1 car that can do it all. Not built for everyone, but for the few that need pace and space.. it is perfect!
Watch our 12 month update on this car here: ruclips.net/video/xwgMTavwBho/видео.html

I see it like a cheap RS6... Tuning potential is REAL with the Golf R.
more like a cheap s4 at best, and thats pushing the boat out a fair bit
Wise choice, great underrated car. And you keep the wife happy too, little does she know, lol.
cheers
Great video. Must be the only video on youtube where the owner and his mates are not stuck up their own arse's and not laughing all the time. Nice one lads, brilliant. Proper blokes.
Thanks mate, more to come so stick with us!
Rob Beard I find them terribly boring and gay
Mark Spark yep that's us, get ready because there's more boring vids on the way.
So boring that you took the time to reply to someone else's post ! Not sure who is the boring one.
I have the hatch with the dynamic chassis control. I bought the car with 18s and drove 400 miles home on them. Then I changed to the 19 Pretoria wheels. The ride is far far better on the 19s! Seriously it was like I had flat tyres, I had to check I still had 38psi in
Why isn't this car in America?!?!
I've got an old R32 and he will love it in the rain, only complaint I have with the haldex is its hard reversing through snow but thats about it.
So jelly ... Wish the states could get a few of these ... I'm happy I have the golf varient awd 6speed .. but it's gonna become my second project car .. to make it how I want it .. and from the looks of it vw already made it .. the variant r is basically 97% the way I want it
Nice quality. I quite like the snort that thing gives between gear changes.
Colyers yeah it is actually pretty loud from outside too, makes it sound pretty fruity for a golf estate!
Great review lads, had mine for three months now, despite being the Lapiz Blue colour, noone knows what it is really. "What you getting?"... "Golf Estate"... played that card at work! Nice vid! We have one landing next week and will be doing a video on it!
TheSUPERCARDRIVER cheers, it's a great car that in estate form has very little competition, focus st and Leon cupra aside, but both of them are down on power and fwd. very much the perfect fun sleeper
Great video guys!
Wow! i didnt know that about the con out of the rear LED lights on the estate!
Twentymacc VW saw the error on their ways, the updated version of the R estate comes with LED rear lights. Although nothing changed on the exhaust unfortunately!

Zeddy DAN thanks man, although this wasn't meant to be particularly in depth as Chris had literally only just got it. We'll film a more detailed owners review soon now that he's had the car for about 6 months
when the roads do get wet dont push too hard and end up sticking it in the hedge.
Great review. Subscribed !!
Nice video guys.. Found your channel searching for golf R..
Enjoyed the Bmw videos... Keep it up. Im thinking about an R but normally a diesel guy..
THEG12EG Thanks for the support! We have plenty coming up soon. The R is a great car. Let us know what you think if you get out on a test drive.
Love the video and the car! Anychance we get a follow up vid, would love to see his long term impressions on it.
we need this stateside.
This will be my next car.
Todor Slavchev stay tuned, 12 month update coming shortly about this car
I've noticed the single outlets on the exhaust give it more of a crack like the gti. Where as the R hatches sound more like a duck with all outlets open. lol. Wonder if anyone has connected /modded the fake tips up at all to be open...
It definitely cracks loudly on upshifts that’s for sure!
Nice Video thank you for the nice Review, does the car have the Stock exhaust?
Smokerboy30 yes this one has a standard exhaust no mods
Subscribed any updates on the Golf R estate? Any more details, does it have spare wheel, can you fit a rear tow bar?
tmitch45 - Hey, no towbar options in the uk unfortunately but does have a spare wheel.
I really wish they sold this version in the US, I'd love to have one. However estates seem to never sell here...
Nothing beats a fast estate it'd the ultimate sleeper. Just wish BMW made a M Touring model.
Ze Germanz just pick up 335d x drive and tunnit then you have beast 👍
Nice car and video, question does the pan roof open? And did you spec dcc?
Chris White pan roof opens yep, and dcc wasn’t specced on this car
I have one of these, picked it up September mine came with Sat Nav as standard. As for the fake exhaust tips it is the only thing I dislike about it, the facelift model has actual exhaust tips so VW must have realised there mistakes
Great car, kind of in a practicality/ fun bracket all of its own. If you don't count the (down on power) 2wd Focus ST and Seat leon
When bought last car was a decision between Golf R estate or M135i. Always been a VW person. Richard John in the planning don't worry!

Peter benn pan this is how the hatchback exhaust works but the estate has a different exhaust completely, no flaps at all
Ah i see well thats abit shit then isnt it. The dag farts seem kinda loud arnt they
So 25% List price with options, cash or with £2k VW Contribution when linked to PCP & approx. 4.5 % APR scheme?
Approx £26500? No DCC option?

I think one of them is from the R forum :)
drivelinetime chris might be?! He loves it
possibly the longest 12:43sec.
Not a bad review though, good first effort.
Glad you stayed for all 12.43! this was just a first impressions vid really. We will do a proper review of the Golf R with Chris once he has had the car a bit longer
The quad (fake) exhaust suit this car more since it's bigger they always looked abit too much on a hatchback
Birmingham racing Agreed! We feel it sets the rear of the car off nicely and lets people in the know that you're gonna have to keep up!
the ea888 engine is the same across the range same size turbo that's why the gti all you need is a stage 1 map and you have same HP as the R
According to evo the ea888 in the golf r has a different cylinder head, different injectors, slightly bigger turbo and different pistons. Didn't realise it had that many modifications if I'm honest but certainly got more than just a tune

update? :)
Pingman coming soon! He's had it 10 months and done 12k miles so certainly can give a good ownership perspective
Im really not a fan of the fake sounds. Car makes should scrap that and just put a half decent exhaust stock from factory.
Why this car is not in north america :(
JOZEZAZO HD Always the option to import one! Could start a trend...
Station Vagon.
garth emsl
You ui
Have the mk7 Golf R myself, but turn off the soundaktor via vcds...sounds so naff that fake noise
Red ...
i cant stand the sound actuator... id turn that off
Don't write GTD in the title when it is clearly not a Diesel.
Erm GTD stands for 'Guys That Drive' mate?
omblae good to know you got our backs Omblae!
Always.
darek4488 How stupid do u feel now.
Really???? A dummy quad pump??? What a waste of space and that tiny amount of extra weight.
