The only electric car I like.
Mate Rimac is a true genius and visionary. I can't overstate how much I admire him, how much of a genius he is and how important he is to the industry.
Mate is a special human. His greatst traits to learn from may not even be in engineering where he had taken a huge industry by storm. I think he's a bit of an undercover mystic of sorts. Seems to be extremely capable at staying in the kind of mental flow that gets all of us our best moments. With him, the moments appear to be an almost seamless motion picture. Navigating startup pitfalls, competing with all of automotive, becoming their only hope for survival, and ending up being offered Bugatti, else VW would probably dismantle it or leave it to some Arab as a company to toy around with.
I am looking forward to see Rimac Concept 3.
I'm sure they have takeaways from Concept 2 - Nevera. Somehow, I think they ended up 300-400 kg heavier than they wanted to be. I very much wonder at which stage they knew this was going to be their reality.
They've ended up heavier than a Model S, with an all carbon (where viable) construction, 2 seats and barely any cargo space. What they did put in was about double the power (and better cooling) and about 20% more battery capacity. The 900 hp of extra power and especially the cooling are probably heavier to put into a car than the 20% of battery which probably amounts to 100-150 kg all packaged up.
Their Concept 1 was less refined by a huge margin, and closer to 1000 hp, but also hundreds of kgs lighter. How light could they get a 1000 hp car with all they know and have today? To get more into track day driving (Nevera eats tyres too hard on a hot day with all the weight) and still a great daily and drag strip performance, I'd like to see a weight and lateral grip focused car. Clever active aero to within a second swap between a really lower drag car (think Model S but lower) and a GT3 car. Panels, wings, etc, that pop out and drastically change air flow. Of course with minimal weight inpacts from the extra surfaces and actuators and suppporting structures. The ultra slick mode and the very more efficient inverter and motor on at least one axle would secure grand touring motorway range (WLPT style driving consumption really doesn't matter for Rimac owners I would say) with a smaller and lighter battery. Take the Model S/X Plaid battery as an example. 100 kWh, 1000 hp. Its main problem: cooling, so Rimac would need to do better there, but the lower power output per kWh (C rating) would help them make the pack a lot lighter than Nevera's. New motors for half the peak power are going to save huge weight. Would two Koenigsegg Dark Matter motors (800 hp and only 39 kg each) be a good idea? From a business stand point they want (NEED) to do their own motors, and ones that actually perform under sustained load. We don't know what the Dark Matter allows for sustained loading, in terms of cooling ability and requirements. If such motors would suffice, Rimac needs to develop them or strike a deal for the Koenigsegg technology in theirs, and improve where they see fit. It would be a gigantic weight saving I think, look at the Nevera motors, four of them.
A car with a lighter drivetrain can be a bit lighter from a structural integrity aspect, which will help a bit. I sure would love to see it. There is a risk that Porsche will simply make such a car, and when they do, Rimac may find it hard to out do that.

I hate to be the one to say it, but if you disrespect this car, it will kill you. Remember Richard Hammond and his first tries in the old car? Lots of very wealthy folks about to level up waaay beyond anything they've ever driven. Like giving an F-35 Raptor to a Cessna pilot.
The new car is probably safer, but also heavier. I'm not even convinced the new car can achieve better cornering speeds, but it will arrive to a corner a lot faster.
